Ubisoft Cloud Copy Protection Can Instantly Shut Down Your Game

Above is a mockup of the Ubisoft Cloud Copy Protection prompt integrated into Assassin’s Creed 2 that pops up the instant your network connection to the Ubisoft master server goes down from within the game.

… let that sink in for just a minute…

You thought BSOD’s were frustrating, you thought games locking up on you was frustrating… how about the microsecond that your:

  • DSL or Cable modem reboots or looses network connection
  • Your ISPs service goes down
  • The route from your house to Ubisoft’s master server is interrupted
  • Ubisoft’s master server goes down

the game you are currently played is stopped, all progress from the last checkpoint is lost and you are thrown back out to the Windows desktop. I can’t even imagine how hard I would punch a hole through my monitor if this happened to me, but that is exactly what Ubisoft is offering to you if you wish to store your saved games online with their cloud “service” (I put quotes there because this sounds more like mental-rape than an actual service).

PC Gamer has a write up of the authors experience of what it was really like to experience this and it’s nothing short of insanity-inducing.

I can understand the desire to fight piracy and the desire to provide cloud services to gamers, but god-in-heaven how did Ubisoft push this out and not atleast adjust the save points in the games that require it to be real-time, so every few seconds a save is issued so loosing progress is never an issue.

This is certainly the “cheap hack” way to get this copy protection integration at the cost of many people’s sanity and screwing over their entire population of legit gamers in the name of stopping the pirates and hackers.

The best part? This will get hacked just like every other DRM scheme out there, and the only people that are actually effected and punished by Ubisoft’s Copy Protection service are the gamers that went out and bought the game.

What a fucking backwards system DRM is…
