Samsung Instinct, the iPhone's Closest Competitor

On June 20th Sprint is set to announce the iPhone’s closest competitor: The Samsung Instinct.

The Instinct offers the same approach to a phone device that the iPhone made popular: slapping a myriad of features into a “slab” touch-screen design but wrapping all that functionality with an intuitive design.

The Instinct is bringing all the usual suspects to the functionality-table, including:

  • Email
  • Web browsing
  • GPS (Turn by Turn directions)
  • Messaging (SMS, MMS)
  • Video
  • Live streaming TV
  • Photos
  • Music
  • Online radio
  • EV-DO, Rev A
  • Software can be updated over data network
  • 2MP Camera
  • Support recording video
  • MicroSD support
  • Smaller form factor than the iPhone
  • Removable battery

One of the big surprises with the Instinct is that it’s a Samsung-designed piece of hardware running Sprint-developed software. The two companies worked hand-in-hand to create the iPhone competitor and get it out on the Sprint network as a Sprint exclusive.

The platform for the instinct is based on Java and Sprint has said that it will be open to 3rd party developers. The only questions are popping up around the current status of Sprint as a cellular provider. There are complaints about the size and quality of the network as well as coverage in many areas… my guess is that the Instinct is a good move by Sprint to give the network it’s own “bell of the ball” to make it seem more attractive to rivals for a buy-out.

Thanks to Jens Eckels for sending this one in!
