Ok so a few people had this problem and so did I. Essentially you hook the PS3 up to your TV over HDMI, and you get a signal, but it’s a black screen. I had been waiting about a week to get my HDMI cable in the mail from MonoPrice and when it finally got here and I hooked it up, and switched on the PS3 I was pissed.
Update #2: I surprising number of people have reported that simply unplugging all components and waiting about 10 mins before plugging them back in and fixed their setups. We have some more comprehensive workarounds below if that one doesn’t do the trick, but you should at least try it first.
After some reading I saw the suggestion that worked for me:
- Hook up the PS3 using the old-school cables that came in the box, in my case that was the composite cable, in addition to the HDMI connection between the TV and PS3 (connect both outputs).
- Turn on the PS3, let it boot up
- OPTIONAL: If you have no video, hold your finger on the Power button for 6-10 seconds, you should hear two beeps. A normal power-off is only 2 seconds or so, but if you hold your finger there for 6-10 secs it causes a hardware reset which should reset your video output to the default composite cable. After the second beep, you can let go.
- OPTIONAL: With newer firmware updates, it seems the PS3 auto-detects the HDMI connection and will ask you if you want to switch to it, you can say “Yes” and skip down to Step #7.
- Go to the System Settings > Display Settings, and change the display to HDMI
- Switch your TV to the HDMI input, accept the display changes.
- Unhook the old (composite) connection.
After much worrying, the steps above fixed my problem and I was off the races. My first impression of the interface running at 1080p on my Mitsubishi WD-65831 was “NICE!”… I’ll post my BluRay (Crank) impressions soon.
Update #1: This update is long overdue — this post is a few years old and there have been almost 200 replies below with folks running into the same issue. I’m going to try and summarize some of the other things that have worked for people incase the above doesn’t do the trick:
- Problem: No matter what you do, you cannot get video output OR you get it, but loose it after a few moments/secs/minutes.
- SOLUTION: More than a few times I’ve seen this caused by cheap HDMI cables that are not allowing the television and PS3 negotiate a secure HDMI connection OR your TV/PS3 just doesn’t like the cable. I recommend Amazon Basics HDMI Cable for $7 or something from Blue Jeans Cable (make sure you get the right length).
- NOTES: In cases where you are using HDMI-DVI or an HDMI hub or some other piece of equipment in the connection chain, try and rule that piece of equipment out first (by removing it temporarily) before getting mad at the PS3 or TV. That would be the easiest way to start troubleshooting.
- Problem: Video output is corrupt (weird artifacts) or discolored or screwed up in some weird way.
- SOLUTION: This sounds like damage to the video card in the PS3 and likely needs to be sent to Sony. There are a few commentors below that reported this issue.
- [NEW] Problem: I get video output from the composite or component cables but not from the HDMI output and it used to work!
-
- Make sure your PS3 firmware is fully updated. Past PS3 firmware updates have effected how the PS3 negotiates a secured HDMI connection and may help.
- Make sure your TV’s firmware is fully updated. Yep, TV’s have firmwares. You can check your manufacturer’s website, they typically offer firmware updates that you can download to a USB drive and plug into the side of the TV and they auto-update themselves.
- If none of that works, follow the first recommendation and try a new, high-quality 6.5′ HDMI cable from Amazon – $7.
- If that doesn’t work, the problem might be your PS3 and TV not being able to establish a secure HDMI handshake which is required for an HD signal. You can try working around this (if your PS3 and TV hate each other) by purchasing what is called an “HDMI switch”, it’s basically a hub but for HDMI connections (as opposed to USB or network connections). You can get a $10 manual switch here, or a nicer remote-controlled HDMI switch here for $25. If you just have the 1 PS3 HDMI connection and don’t need any other connections, just grab the $10 one since it will always stay on the same setting.
- SOLUTION: More and more people are reporting this issue in the comments below and my recommendation to them is to troubleshoot in the following sequence, total cost is around $17-32:
-
- [NEW] Problem: I get video out from the composite cable that came bundled with the PS3, but not from HDMI and I really don’t want to send my PS3 back to Sony for repair! What can I do?
- SOLUTION: Ok, it sounds like there is something wrong with your HDMI port and it needs to be repaired, but if you really don’t want to do this, another option is to buy the PS3 Component AV Cable ($16), check to make sure your TV accepts HD (720p, 1080i or 1080p) over the component connection and hook your PS3 up that way instead.
- Problem: I’ve tried everything and cannot get video output.
- SOLUTION: Very similar to the one before, this sounds like your video card might be toast and your PS3 needs service from Sony. (I’m assuming you have tried literally everything else recommended).
REMINDER: If you don’t see your particular question answered here, use your browser search functionality to search this page (which includes the comments below) for keywords to your problem; there is some awesome information in the comments about alternative setups or configuration issues that is too broad to try and generalize and cover directly here.

Cheers man! Had the PS3 and TV for awhile. Finally got around to getting a HDMI cable…wasn’t happy when it didn’t work. Yours was the first site I came across…problem solved nice and quick.
Tom, really glad to here. Everyone in the comments here have been unbelievably helpful sharing their tips and tricks to get the PS3 to stop being stingy with the different HDMI connections out there. You guys rock.
hey, same deal, just got an hdmi cable, first site I saw was yours. I tried the questionable but effective unplug-everything-and-wait-ten-minutes trick and BAM! Glorious HDMI! So worth the $27 I spent on the cable at Best Buy. Thanks for the guide!
Ok well. I’m confused, recently i took my Ps3 to a friends house to play, going from HDMI to old av cables, we easily switched the settings to it and played, when about to leave, we switched the settings back to HDMI so when I got home I wouldn’t have to go through the hassle. Well now that i got home, I plugged in my power cable, my HDMI cable, and my ethernet cable. Now when turning on my T.V. and having it on the input of my Ps3, the screen is black and makes that awful statiky (staticy I dont know how to spell that) noise. I’ve tried unplugging everything and retrying, and now when i try to hold the button down for two beeps, it just turns off. I need help and I’d appreciate any advice given. Thank you.
P.S. I’m a 15 year old kid whos dad will kill him if i broke it.
I have an HDMI TV and everything figured it out no prob. and yurs is quick n’ easy BUT I let my uncle borrow mine so i tried it without HDMI on a normal TV (not HD) and with the color jacks but it will just come up black it worked before now its just… DEAD… can you help figure it out?? PLEASE
I just got an HDMI cable, I played with it and it worked al fine, but later when I hooked it up upstairs with an AV cable it just showed a black screen, I went downstairs again to chnage the settings but suddenly both the AV and the HMDI cable didn’t work. I tried everything plugging different cables in and out, restarting it, I even looked in the manuel but is says nothing about it, plz help!!
Huib, if you still don’t have this fixed then try this:
“OPTIONAL: If you have no video, hold your finger on the Power button for 6-10 seconds, you should hear two beeps. A normal power-off is only 2 seconds or so, but if you hold your finger there for 6-10 secs it causes a hardware reset which should reset your video output to the default composite cable. After the second beep, you can let go.”
Its a factory hard reset and will reset your graphics system to default.
Hey this is simple turn your ps3 off on the touch pannel and when turning it back on hold the panel and wait for a second beep, let go and wait it should find one of the two
I know this response is three months after your post, but I just purchased a 320gb ps3 and after being frustrated over not being able to see or hear anything on my tv after connecting the HDMI cable, I found your message and it worked perfectly, thank you Matthew!!!!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
A repairman was coming tomorrow to “fix” my Sammy. My last Hail Mary was to try the reset you suggest… until then I did not know how I could go in and fix any settings because I could not SEE anything. Your suggestion allowed me to see with the Component connection… from there I set the HDMI to automatically detect settings, then flipped over to HDMI and there it was! I am now good to go… thanks so much!
I’m having a similar problem. I’m viewing images perfectly fine via RCA cables, but absolutely nothing is happening via HDMI. I, like the others, thought I didn’t spend enough money on my cable, and purchased a new, brand name cable, with the same results. I’ve done a hard reset by holding the power, at that point I had both HDMI and RCA cables plugged in. The PS3 system prompted me to switch the display over to HDMI as it recognizes HDMI cable being plugged in, when I select ‘yes’… I get the infamous black screen. I have a Sony LED TV.. I’m confused. Please help. Thanks!!
I’m having the same issue. Have you managed to solve it yet?
My ps3 have a problem… i bought it in portugal and i bring it to brazil and try i tryed to connect but when i turn it on the screen its white and black colour (like old movies)
How do you have the PS3 connected? That almost sounds like a cable issue (if you are using composite or component, but not HDMI)
my 80gb ps3 from 2007 wasn’t working. One day the XMB started freezing, and then one day it appeared very dark you could only see the sparkles, and then it was completely black. I couldn’t get to the recovery menu (hold button for 5 seconds then 2 seconds, etc. — didn’t work).
So I bought a ps3 slim. I took the 80gb hard drive from the 2007 ps3 and put it into the ps3 slim. It recognized the disk but the system software didn’t work, so it reformatted it and updated the 80gb hard drive to 3.15 system. I swithced the newly formatted hard drive to my old 2007 ps3, and the old 2007 ps3 does not startup — just blue light and fan whirring but no XMB menu — completely blank.
How do I salvage the 2007 ps3? I think it’s possible — the hard drive is working, and I don’t think the graphic chip is bad, but I’m not an expert.
regarding this 2007 ps3, i shutdown my tv and surge protector, then instead of the hdmi I used to the composite video — after many tries I was able to see some graphics — very dark, just a few sparkles. I think this means that my graphics chip is fried, but that everything else is fine. is that easy for somebody with a screw driver to replace?
steve,
Unfortunately the consoles are built to be fairly tamper-proof. I also think that’s a fairly complex integrated design inside the PS3, I doubt even if you got it open that you could replace the graphical subsystem – either because of it’s integration on the same silicon as other core components or just the issue of finding a replacement part all together.
That really sucks, but it sounds like you are right and the graphic chip might have overheated or something. I wonder if you could get linux on the thing and just use it as a headless server?
THANK YOU! You just made my day! I am so glad I read this. I was ready to carry my VERY heavy flat panel HDTV into a repair shop, and pay a pricey bill to have it repaired (not to mention I have no time to do all this). I just thought I would give the internet a try and do some trouble shooting. I found this and decided to try it.. and HAL-A-LU-YAH!!!! It worked.. Thank you so much!
Jessica,
Really glad you didn’t have to drag your TV or PS3 off to the repair shop. That’s an exhausting experience.
Happy Gaming!
When I went to turn on my PS3 today, the user menu didn’t come up. I could see the background but none of the options were there and it wouldn’t turn off. I had to unplug it to get it to turn off. I turned it back on and got the same thing. Eventually the background of the main menu stopped coming up and now all I can get when I turn it on is a black screen. I tried holding down the power button when I turn it on to reset the video settings but that didn’t work either. I still got the black screen. Anyone heard of this and know how to fix?
Its a Slim btw.
Chomppig,
That sounds like a hardware initialization error on startup… maybe a disk error because you are only seeing the background and not getting the XMB to init and load up (which requires reading a lot of data off the disk).
You might need to send it in for repair to Sony just incase I’m wrong and it’s some internal hardware failure that Sony would need to repair for you.
Hopefully it’s still under warranty.
Thanks for the reply. It is still under warranty so that is probably what I will do.
hey i enconterd a problem with my ps3 on hd today . last night was working fine i turned it off and the tv . though tonight go to play tonight and the screen stays blank ????? the hd cable in HDM1 and in the ps3 fine i then get the av cable to see if the ps3 settings were changed but it wont come up at all so my p23 is set o the HD setting and my HDM1 source is a Blank screen ???? what do i do buy a new Cable???
Adam, I would hook the AV cable up (that composite one that came in the box) and unhook the HDMI one from the PS3, then do a hard reset — holding down the power button for 10 secs until you get that second beep THEN check if visuals are gone or not. Should give you a better test.
GOD BLESS YOU, YOU GOD DAMN GENIOUS
Led, woohoo! I’m guessing you got things working again? Glad to hear it!
Hey I seem to have a problem similar to this.
My PS3 will have a clear, consistent signal with the tv using COMPOSITE cables. I can play games fine using these cables.
However, when I use the HDMI cables, the signal is not consistent. I get like a flickering screen, losing HDMI connection every few seconds and showing up again with a distorted image.
Is this a problem with my PS3 HDMI output, or just my HDMI cable? The HDMI cable works fine with my satellite box though. Thanks for any help!
To answer my own question:
The PS3 only gives the flicking white-snow images on HDMI2/DVI. What the heck is this DVI? It is a Digital Video Interface that HDMI connections usually use.
So my hypothesis is that maybe the PS3 DVI outputs are fried/broken, thus resulting in the flickering images. However, I do not know why it doesn’t even show flickering images in HDMI 1 and HDMI 3. More and more ideas are just popping into my head trying to fix this.
Arnz,
It sounds like you are using an HDMI to DVI cable or a converted on one end — this is not a 1:1 native connection. HDMI cables carry video as well as audio information, DVI is video only. Also a HDMI/DVI connection cannot establish a secure HDMI connection which *might* be attributing to the flaky picture you are seeing.
Check out Blue Jeans Cables and get a real HDMI/HDMI cable if you have a spare connection on the back site of your TV and hook up the PS3, that should fix you up.
Thanks dude! These instructions were right on. Peace!!!!!!!
Kane, excellent. Happy gaming!
NO NO NO, you do not need to do any of the above. Simply unplug your console and plug it in to another HDMI capable tv, it WILL show up, unplug and plug back into original tv and WaLa! There is that beautiful 1080i picture! Myself, and two buddies have all had this problem, who knows what the hell it is, but none of the above have ever worked, only thing that works is to unplug and plug into another tv then unplug and plug back into original. if this doesnt worked, you are F’d.
same wont disply hdmi didb4 try new cable ,,,now try wht you say fingerrs crossed
Yep…simply had to plug the PS3 into our neighbor’s HD tv and plugged it back in to ours and IT WORKS!
Help. I have read all the comments about the blank screen and HDMI cable as thtat is the problem I have and I have tried holding the button down but still don’t get anything. I can’t try the other suggestion with the different cable cause I bought it pre owned and don’t have it……..any other suggestions as to how I can fix it? Do I need to get a composite cable?
okay i have read through all of the comments to try and solve my problem but couldnt figure it out. i have a first gen 60gig ps3 that has worked fine since ive had it. just recently i was watching netflix through it and the screen went black (slight greenish tint)
and everytime i try to restart the ps3 i have sound but no video. and i can tell that the ps3 is gettin some sort of video output because the screen turns slightly green when its on. i have tried holding down the button for the 10 seconds till i get the double beep and nothing happens. i tried plugging in my ps3 to a differnt tv aswell and still nothing.
i am using hdmi cables. please if anyone can help i would greatly appreciate it. the wife wont leave me alone about not being able to use netflix lol.
thanks much!
brian — that’s the same model I have — bust out the old composite cables from the box (the old school yellow one) and plug them in after the double-beep reset, into your TV… you should get *some* output… if you don’t, then your vid card might have crapped out and it might need service from Sony.
IIRC the double-beep 10 sec reset actually does a factory reset on the output settings, so if you keep using HDMI and aren’t seeing output, I *believe* that’s expected, so don’t loose hope yet until you test with the composite cable.
I bought a backwards compatible PS3 off ebay, worked fine for a few hours then the screen froze with music still playing. restarted it and now the screen is staying black and shows a shot through the center (a flash like its trying to send video) when its turned on. I tried a video reset with the composite cabels on different TV’s but it hasn’t worked. I dont know if i makes a difference but once its turned on the power button in the front cant be used to turn it off, I have to use the back switch. The hard drive was upgraded to a 320GB by the previous user as well.
Chris, that doesn’t sound good dude. I didn’t understand the “staying black and shows a shot through the center”; that could be a shot video card… try and cool the box down as much as possible, leave it off for a few hours, then give it a try. Do you get ANY video? If you do, and then it cuts out again after some use, it sounds to me like the cooling on the GPU might need to be reseated/fixed OR there is thermal damage to the video card — either way it’s probably a repair call to Sony.
Before you get too mad though, I’m just trying to guess at this from across the internet… so there is a chance it’s something easier to fix… I just don’t know what it is from here.
Yeah it never shows actual video, tried a few different TV’s and still get nothing. I think the video card is shot, I only played it for 3 hours before it died on me so I think it was having problems before it was sent to me, ebay is giving me a refund instead of having to send it to sony. Thanks for the help and keep it up you seem like you’ve helped allot of people on these problems.
I have a PS3 Slim and tried using 3 different brands of HDMI cables. 1 from Belkin (1.3a 1080p), 1 from Monoprice (1.3a High Speed 1080p), and another from my hd cable box no name cable. Playing games or movies sometimes results in a black screen for about a second. so i know it’s not the cable. actually, the problem is with the TV’s hdmi ports (all 3). i have a XBR4 which has major problems displaying consistently 1080p. i changed the display settings on the PS3 to display at 1080i only and the problems went away. when i plugged the ps3 to a newer W series Sony, it displayed 1080p without blacking out at movies, games or the XMB. the best fix is just use component cables that way you dont have deal with handshake issues.
confused – thanks for taking the time to share, handshake issues like that are damn frustrating when they occur and not a lot of people realize what’s happening as there is no nice friendly message, it just goes black like something is busted.
I would only add to your recommendation that the person double-check what resolution their component-in on their TV support; not every TV supports 1080p over component (like my Mits) and they might want to deal with 1080i over HDMI instead of component — any good modern TV should do a decent job of de-interlacing an interlaced signal (from 1080i to 1080p) but I guess that will just be up to the user to do some A/B testing and see what they think.
Anyway, good post!
well ive had my ps3 slim for about a week and i finaly got an hdmi cable from staples, 6 ft for $40. so i go home and hook it up and switch it over to hdmi mode and switch the tv to hdmi and i see everything in stunning 1080p. im amazed. i play it for a while then turn it off. later that night a couple untrustworthy people come over so i unplugg the cables from the ps3 side and move the ps3 to my room. next day i take it back out in the living room, plug everything back in and now the screen just flashes. you see it the ps3 xmb then it goes black then it comes back and repeats. and sometimes it just shows static. is there something wrong with the cable or ps3 output?? need help asap, just got some blu rays and cant watch in full hd now! please help.
nevermind. i fixed it. i was in a rage and went straight to posting that instead of actually looking at information. i turned off the tv and the ps3 and just sat down and let myself cool off. after 5 or so min i came back in here and read some of the other peoples comments and read something about making sure theres no sharp turns or any twists in the cables. so i went out there and moved the ps3 to a lower shelf so that it was directly in front of the hole in the back of the entertainment system where cables feed through so that the hdmi cable just goes straight through and into the ps3. turned on the ps3 and tv and viola! it works. thanks for this web page and comments section i guess. saved my life.
Don’t know if this will help anybody else but my sons PS3 stopped working through the hdmi cable but was working through composite cables tried lots of things couldn’t get it back so finally I unplugged the TV from the mains plugged it back in and lo and behold it worked in HD
hi i need som help.
i tried connecting my ps3 to my harman/kardon av reciever through an HDMI cable. but the messga ei get on the screen is ” copy protected digital input. move the hdmi to your display to view content.” how do i sort out this?
lal – how new is the receiver? Where did you get the cable from?
If your setup is:
PS3 –> Receiver –> TV
all over HDMI, it should work — but for some reason it sounds like your setup is not able to establish a secure HDMI handshake. I’ve seen that happen with really shitty HDMI cables before, so I’m not sure if that is the case here.
give us some more info about your setup.
This operation up top worked perfect for me. I got a Vizio HDMI cable and I was getting flustered by just getting the black screen. Once I did what I was told to do I just reset the PS3 and switched my HD TV to the right input and tada!!! THANKS A BUNCH!!!
Glad it worked Robert!
Hello. I have recently came across most of the problems you have had with my ps3 system. If the the following steps and advice do not work i would suggest going to http://us.playstation.com/csimg/PS3/oob_setup.html It fixed my problem right away after trying the steps on here. Hope it this helps!!
Hello I happen to have a problem just today were I cannot play movies (dvd or blue-ray) and it wasn’t like this a few hours ago, I can play video games just fine with hdmi cables, but I can’t play movies! Even without hdmi cables connected the screen turned blank, and I’m worried its the ps3 itself, but I don’t get why it can play games, but it can’t play movies. Any one know the resolution to my problem? This is recent btw it used to play movies just fine. Thanks
tono,
Make sure you are trying games that play off the disk and not downloadable games that load only off the HD.
Like God of War 3 or something (only plays off disk, no install-to-hard drive option).
Try and shut your PS3 off for a while, maybe 30 mins, then start it back up and see if it works again. If it does, it might be a heat issue.
I just cant resolve this problem, I tried everything but still black screen and no signal. Help
regards
rok, What have you tried? Be specific.
i checked the cable,is fine, then the tv settings are the same, on AUTO, i tried to get it into the safe mode but no luck, i tried different combinations with power button, i read many posts about that problem, watced videos on youtube, i tried unplugging, different tv,…
rok,
That’s not enough data to pin-point where the problem is. At this point it COULD be the cable, TV, port or PS3 still.
Here are some other things to try:
* Try the composite cable that comes in the box, do you get video?
* Try *other* HDMI cables. Amazon has some cheap, decent quality ones.
* Try another HDMI-device plugged into that same port with the same cable (like a Blu-ray player), does that work?
hi
well it’s weird because i have it for 4 years now and this problem started to occur 4 months ago, but i just turned it on again and it was ok, now nothing works,
i tried s videao cable and I get the video,
hdmi cable is okey ( i tried another device in the same port and it works)
thanks that really help i got my ps3 working again thanks alot
jose, glad to hear it!
Hi there Riyad,
I have a brand new HD1080p tv (bought in the US) and am trying to connect my PS3 to it via HDMI. I get an error message to tell me that the resolution is not supported (probably due to my PS3 being a UK model and it is spitting out 576i after a manual reset of holding down the PS3 power button). How can I display the image of my PS3 so that I can change the resolution it is outputting to 1080p or 720p to allow correct support over HDMI? I have tried using the component cables but I get the same error message.
Here’s hoping you have some ideas! Thanks.
Janet, you have me stumped… that’s just not a problem I’ve ever had to tackle before.
The only thing I can think of is picking up a hardware PAL to NTSC converter (here are some on Amazon) — preferably something cheap that just has a composite or component connection (the cables that come with the PS3 where there is a RED/BLACK/YELLOW pair are composite) and then just get it hooked up long enough to switch the output.
That being said, I have no idea if the the games or region-locked DVDs or Blu-ray disks will give you hassle beyond this initial issue.
This is untreaded territory for me.
I have my PS3 hooked through HDMI since launch and today the image went black when starting up a game (Joe Danger). Now I have tried different hdmi cables, the tv detects a signal but the image stays black. I have reset the settings and the tv can see that it is now 480 instead of 1080 and flickers when I plug/unplug the cable. I have tried pluggin in the cheap composit cable and it works. Is there any way to repair the HDMI connection in the PS3 that anyone knows of or is it a problem with the video card and I got to buy component cables and live with it.. ?
Please help me the best you can,
MephiSkA
MephiSkA,
If you TV was showing that it was getting a signal from your PS3, that is a good thing.
If you have reset the output and composite cables work, then you need to hook both composite and hdmi cables up to your TV, then go to the Settings menu and change your output to HDMI and 1080p — then on your TV change your input to the HDMI input and hopefully you will see the “Does this look correct? Keep this video setting?” prompt from the PS3 and you can accept it.
Thanks, I tried pluggin in the composit and hdmi cables together and the tv detected the hdmi one and it worked.. I had tried many times yesterday but now that I have plugged the composit cable, the plugged the hdmi afterwards, it now works. I did not have to go to the settings and change anything but I still wonder why I could not reset the settings without changing the output to composit. But thank you very much again for your help!
MephiSkA,
Strange… I’m not sure why that wasn’t working before. But hey, that is great news that it is working now. I’ll chalk this one up to gremlins!
Own a Sony Bravia LCD tv, 2 years old. Attempting to connect PS3 to it. Bravia only has one HDMI outlet. When PS3 loads, I can hear the home screen load, but cannot see it. If I click to the left a few times, I will get lucky and the game will play and the TV will recognize the correct output for it. Odd.
The game plays because I rememer on the homescreen that its a few clicks to the left where you can load the game.
I tried a different HDMI cable, but same thing. TV is on correct VIDEO 5 input. I attempted to use a HDMI switch converter, but still no luck. Help
Curtis,
Hrrmmmm… does the Bravia briefly show the signal resolution it is receiving when you turn on the PS3 or start a game? For example, on my Mitsubishi, whenever the output signal resolution changes, it will briefly show a “1080i” or “720p” in the corner of the screen for 3 seconds — this is usually a handy indicator that the TV *is* receiving a signal.
If your tv DOES do this, then check if you see that when you power the PS3 on **and** when you start your game up… if you are only seeing this when you power the game up, then for some reason the PS3 either isn’t sending a signal to your TV when it’s at the XMB (aka “desktop”) or maybe the settings are dorked and need to be reset.
If your TV doesn’t do that, or you just want to try and reset stuff and get it going again, break out the composite cables from the PS3 box that came with it (red/black/yellow) and plug them in.
Then hold down the power button for something like 10 secs… I think it’s the second beep, it does a hard video reset back to factory defaults.
Now change your TV to the composite input and see if you are getting a signal.
Your TV may likely show a signal of “480i” or something, and look like hell. Go to the settings and change the output back to HDMI/1080p and see if it starts behaving.
–> When you change your output settings, make sure to tell your TV to switch it’s inputs to the HDMI input.
NOTE: It’s ok to have both sets of cables plugged in at the same time since they are two separate outputs on the back of the PS3 and inputs on the TV. Just make sure you have the TV set to the right input while testing, otherwise you’ll get a “no signal” message probably.
Lemme know how that goes.
Appreciate the prompt response. The screen literally does nothing when I turn on the PS3. No attempt to find the correct resolution. When I unplug the HDMI cable from the PS3 (with it still in the TV) and plug it back into the DVR, it immediatley changes to the correct resolution and the picture is perfect for the DVR. So I wonder if its NOT the HDMI cable since it works with the DVR. I will do as you propose and will let you know.
Does seem like an odd problem since it recognizes the PS3 once I click on the game to start (but of course have to listen to a blank screen cause the home screen is working in the blackness).
Curtis
Curtis,
Yea I agree with you, doesn’t sound like the cable OR the TV input, which is *Really* good news, cause getting that fixed would be a big headache.
It is definitely odd that the TV only gets a signal from the PS3 once the game is loaded… can you try different games by chance? I wonder if it’s the particular resolution that one game is putting out that the PS3 likes and not so much the other ones.
The easiest “next step” though is to reset the video output the way I mentioned, and reset it all back to 1080p/HDMI again and see if that fixes things up.
It’s almost like when you are at the XMB, the PS3 is outputting via the other output on the back or something… just doing nothing over HDMI, but that doesn’t make sense becuase the output settings (e.g. HDMI) are for the entire PS3, not it’s different “modes”
Either way, we’ll get to the bottom of this soon. Keep me posted!
What you suggested worked. Really appreciate your help. Simply used the composite cables that came with the PS3. Actually was using it already to connect to soundsystem.
Plugged them into the back of the TV. TV recognized the resolution and then worked perfectly.
Thanks!
Hey, that’s badass!
I really wasn’t sure if that was going to help or not given the unique nature of the black screen you were getting, but I’m really glad to hear it did the trick.
Happy gaming!
hi, when i switch on the ps3 , i get the backscreen up but no menu , the ps3 was working fine last week nd has not been used since , can you help ,thank’s
Dave,
Did you try any of the steps outlined in the post? Any of the tips outlined in the comments?
hi, tried one or two of the tip’s, had a corrupted harddrive ,got ps3 working again after using step 5 on ps3 but lost everything that was saved, thanks for your help.
dave,
Damn, sorry to hear about the corrupted hard drive. Did you get Sony to replace it for you, or did you pop your own hard drive in there?
The only way I can think to back that stuff up is to get the PS3 booting, and use the Game Util to save the data onto a USB drive or something before replacing the hard drive, but it sounds like the HD was so corrupt it wouldn’t even boot, in which case there isn’t really much you can do.
had a problem with my ps3 40gb, ps3 works fine on my telly upstairs, ive brought it down stairs, gone through all the setup for the hdmi. home menu comes up fine, then i try n play call of duty but when it plays i get horizontal lines through the picture and theres about 6 or 7 individual screens there, i also tried another game this one just goes straight to a blank screen when on my telly upstairs it plays fine, but i tried tiger woods and that played fine. any one can help i would be more than grateful, also i have been through the fix file system part as well
jamie,
That sounds really strange, is the TV upstairs (the one that the PS3 works on) connected via HDMI as well, or are you using component or composite cables on the one upstairs?
When you said “6 r 7 individual screens” — can you explain what you mean or post a link to a picture of the issue? If it’s corruption AND the TV upstairs doesn’t use HDMI and works, then the issue can be with the hdmi cable, or the TV or PS3′s hdmi port — the graphic card in the PS3 should be fine otherwise you would see corruption regardless of the output.
I don’t have all the details just yet though, so I don’t things are dire yet. Just fill me in on the questions above and I can help more.
my playstation worked fine up until today when i turned it on, i was not getting any picture through hdmi or component input. I did the hold down power button until it reset that was suggested and that got me a picture on component input but when i tried to switch it to hdmi i get no signal at all and it just converts it back to component. I have tested the hdmi chord on my xbox and it works perfectly fine…..if i wanted to play games in 480i I would have hung on to my ps 2 lol…..any sugestions?
cassidy,
So when you take that same HDMI cable and plug it into the *same* input on the TV and hook it to your Xbox 360, everything works fine? If that’s the case, then it sounds like the PS3′s hdmi output for whatever reason might be toast.
The quickest fix I can think of (if you don’t want to send it back to Sony for repair) is to purchase some high quality component cables (the ones that come in the box are “composite” cables) from somewhere like Blue Jeans Cable and hope that your TV accepts 1080p over component.
But if you want that HDMI digital yumminess you might need to send that sucker into Sony and let them take a look at it.
Normally I would recommend a few other tests, but honestly it sounds like you did the reset exactly right AND tested the cable/input with the Xbox exactly right to narrow down the problem to the PS3 itself, so I got nothing. Sorry
Riyad,
I really appreciate your prompt response on this matter. I figured I checked and did everything right and that might be the case so i guess i will just take it in to get looked at. If I find anything out that differs from what we both think it is i will let you know
-thx again
cassidy,
No problem, I wish I had a better response for you. Thanks for keeping us posted on what happens, will be curious to know what was wrong.
Yesterday morning my slim PS3 was working fine. Get home last night and no video, no audio thru the HDMI. Switched to A/V and it works fine. Put the HDMI cable into my cable box and at first I got “your tv will not allow playing from this source thru DVI”. Power cycled the cable box and now I get audio, but no video. Do you think it’s just a bad cable or a problem with my PS3 or a problem with my tv?
Mike,
I’ve not known cables to go bad before, but that being said it IS the cheapest thing to troubleshoot. Do you have an extra one in the house or can you pick one up at Costco or Blue Jeans Cables online for cheap and test it?
If not, can you try running the cable straight into your TV instead of going through the cable box? It’s easiest if we rule out as many indirect devices as possible to see where the problem lies.
Does the TV have a problem displaying any other HDMI content on that input or is everything else OK coming in on that port?
Does the *cable box* have any issues routing HDMI traffic on the input you are hooking the PS3 into? The only way to test this would be to have another devices that transfers over HDMI that you can plug into it and see — like an Xbox 360 w/ HDMI or a Blu-ray player.
The cable box is outputting thru composite cables now and works fine. When i use the hdmi cable, I get the error message, then after I power cycle the box, i get audio and no video. I do however get the guide to display but not the actual video signal. Is there a chance that the hdmi port on the ps3 is bad?
Mike,
I am actually more suspect of your cable box at this point than anything — can we get that out of the picture and test just PS3 connected directly to TV first and see what works and doesn’t work with that setup before connecting the cable box in the middle of that?
Just to clarify, the PS3 was never going thru the cable box. They are on 2 separate inputs on the TV. The PS3 stopped displaying video and I just tested the cable on the cable box.
Mike, I’ve read and re-read your posts trying to get a mental map of what your setup is so I can try and help troubleshoot and it’s just not coming together for me.
1. You mention an HDMI cable with the PS3 (1st post) hooked to an HDMI input on your TV (2nd post) — but then you mention taking that same cable out of the PS3 and testing it on your cable box and the cable box giving you a DVI error (1st post) — this makes me think you are using an HDMI-to-DVI cable of some kind in which case negotiating a secured 1080p connection between your PS3 and TV might be the issue with the video.
2. I am not clear from either post how the cable box connects to the TV (straight HDMI or HDMI-2-DVI) or if you were able to use it as a successful test case with the same cable and the same input on the TV to rule out those as possible problems — from your 1st post it makes it sound like it DIDN’T work because you said you could get audio and the guide, but no video. If that is the case, then there is something wrong with your cable (most likely) or that input on your TV if you can’t get two devices to work with it with a 1080p connection.
But I’m just shooting in the wind here, if you want me to help more I need you to clarify your setup details for me and what you have tested and what worked and didn’t work.
Keep in mind, I can’t see your TV over the internet
riyad, you sound like the man who can help me !!!! my ps3 connected via hdmi works great, my sons ps3 connected via scart to oldish tv upstairs worked great, he tried to bring his down stairs & connect it via my hdmi, i didnt see if he changed any settings or not ( he said he didnt !!!! ) we just got the wavy screen, no menu just waves…so i connected it back upstairs with scart lead & now just black screen, even when i tried it back to hdmi i can only get a black screen, held power button down for the 2 beeps ( which takes about 5 secs, 10 secs and my ps3 will turn off ) it will flicker as if it’s trying to do something then just black screen, the other ps3 is working ok via hdmi… please help
Mark,
I’ve never dealt with SCART connections before (I actually had to go Google that) so I’m not sure if that is the default lowest-definition output that the PS3 resets itself to, or if it’s the European equivalent of component cables here in the states.
What cheap cable came with the PS3 in the box when you bought it? In the states here it is the RCA-style composite cables so when you use the “hold down the power button for a long time” reset, it resets the PS3 video output all the way back down to that level and you have to hook that cable back in to get output. In the European version I’m not sure which output takes precedence on reset.
Let me know and we can try a few things.
riyad,
i’ve just connected it up with the rca cable ( red white yellow ) but still nothing
Mark,
If you can’t even get a signal through the composite cables I think the PS3 might need to go in for warranty repair. Normally the black screen on the PS3 issue can be fixed with a reset and re-configure but if that isn’t even doing it then something might be wrong and it has to go into the PS3-hospital
Hey riyad, i connected my old av multi output that came with the playstation, switched to HDMI, went to my HDMI channel, and it displayed a blank screen. Then I restarted the playstation and waited for two beeps, and when the screen came back it said “HDMI detected, would u like to use these settings?” I clicked yes, and it went blank again….
any help?
Nadogggg,
If you reset again and say “No” to that dialog and let video keep going out the composite cables, can you use the PS3 normally and launch games?
If so, then fortunately the video card is OK and it sounds like something goofy with:
1. HDMI output on the PS3 (somewhat likely)
2. HDMI cable (more likely)
3. TV HDMI input (less likely)
Have you had the PS3 setup for a while and it suddenly stopped working or did you just apply a specific firmware and it suddenly stopped or is this a new setup? Basically I’m asking if there was any catalyst to this failure that might help us figure out what caused things go down the drain.
Oh, thanks Riyad, but i followed Nathan’s advice (unplug) everything, and it worked
excellent article you have here…
Thanks again
i am using the composit/s-video cable that came with my ps3 but i get no pic when i turn it on.I have never used another cable. I do get the screen for the diagnostics, 1 restart 2 restore, so on. So i can hear it and see the diagnostics screen but i have gone through all the 6 steps and still no pic on the start up or when i install a game only sound. I have not tried another tv yet.
well tried new tv same issue no pic using the cables that came with the ps3. Does sony have a 1yr manufactorers warranty? and do you think it will cover this issue? I had it for 45 days and this happened. I have now had it for less then 6 months so im in the 1yr. I bought it at best buy.
amo,
That is really odd to not be able to get video out on the composite — did you try holding the power button for 6 seconds or so (waiting for the 2nd beep) which does the video reset to make sure the PS3 didn’t just get amnesia and accidentally set it self to some other output mode?
I wonder if you tried to plug in an HDMI cable if you would get output (not sure if your TV supports that).
If none of that works, absolutely call Sony for a warranty repair. They should help you out.
So I have a Slim that is getting the black screen with HDMI on my 4 year old Bravia (KDL-40S2000). It used to work on the TV before with HDMI. I recently moved the Slim to another TV updated it and when I went to hook it back up to the Bravia I got a black screen with HDMI.
My slim HDMI works on two other TVs in the house. The HDMI cord hooked up to my Bravia works with my cable box. And I just tried two PHAT PS3s on my Bravia and the HDMI isnt recognized by my Bravia. So it seems like an issue with my Bravia not recognizing my Slim.
I tried calling both Sony Playstation support and Sony Bravia support and no one has a fix after trying everything in the book (reset handshake, format, reinstall software, etc). I guess I’m stuck using component…
BzzMark,
Have you tried a different cable on that TV? I wonder if the 1080p secure handshake algorithm was changed and when you did the firmware update that exacerbated the issue.
If you have a Costco near you, they carry a set of 2 really nice HDMI cables for like $14 or something, online Amazon has their Amazon-branded ones that are cheap and excellent or you can hit up Blue Jeans Cables.
If you have already tried a sufficiently different cable (e.g. you didn’t just have 2 of the same kind of HDMI cable) and it’s still not working, the only thing I can think of is trying to run yourr HDMI through your receiver first THEN go to the TV and see if that helps, or purchase a little HDMI hub and see if that helps — it might allow the PS3 to create a secure connection with the hub, then the hub to the TV… that way the TV and the PS3 won’t have to talk to each other.
Everyone, I figured something out that might work for some people. After trying just about everything listed on the page and calling Sony several times, In shear desperation I decided to un-plug everything connected to my PS3, including my TV… and sure enough, it worked. Please try this if you are feeling like the only remaining solution is to send your Playstation™ into Sony. You wouldn’t want them to send it back after two to three weeks just to tell you to un-plug everything.
Sincerely,
-Nathan, @TheManagement
Nathan,
Appreciate you following up with that reminder that sometimes the easiest solutions are the best — I updated the post to make that the first suggestion to try for folks finding this for the first time.
Riyad,
Thanks for making it easier for people to access the information. This really is a splendid article you have and a congratulate you on the attention you pay to each and every comment . . . I’m sure that you have helped hundreds of people with their troubling problems, and until Sony™ creates a perfect machine, I think you are our last hope . . .
Sincerely,
-Nathan, @TheManagement
Nathan, I surely appreciate the kind words, thank you!
Yet another one with the dead picture problem -.-
I tried and tried and tried to get the hdmi to work again until now without success…
My Phillips TV does not want to communicate with my PS3 anymore, after working with it for 1.5 years. I know that both the TV’s and PS3′s HDMI ports are working as my PS3 works with my monitor and my TV works with my Laptop via HDMI. I tried 2 HDMI cables which both are not corrupted (as they worked linking the monitor and laptop).
Now I managed to connect my PS3 to the TV via the composite cable (through the holding of the power button video reset) and go to the display settings to switch over to HDMI – without success. While the PS3 says that it sends the signal via HDMI for 30seconds I still get no picture on the HDMI channel.
Note: also took out all the plugs for at least an hour only to find it still doesn’t work.
It doesn’t make any sense!
dude i have the same problem, i can not figure it out.
derliam,
My suggestions for you are the same for Logan, please check here and see if any of those tips do the trick.
I know you mentioned that you tried two different HDMI cables, if they were vastly different (totally different companies and different quality) then you can skip that step and go right to the HDMI switch.
If the two cables were just duplicates of each other (e.g. the same brand) then I’d still suggest trying it… it’s amazingly dumb how many times a new HDMI cable will fix 1080p/HDMI negotiation problems.
hi riyad,
thanks a lot for your effort!
I followed your advice and bought an HDMI switch and things have indeed changed but I don’t know if it’s progress or not…:S I also bought another HDMI cable, so now I have 3 different branded HDMI cables…
The following is happening: Now the switch did indeed make the HDMI “work” again, but first only at 576p…at this resolution, using the HDMI cable, it asks me “HDMI was detected, do you want to output video and audio using HDMI?” – when I select “yes”, the screen automatically goes dead saying “video not supported” and when I select “no”, I hear the PS3 start-up sound but not no picture…
Now I know the PS3 video card cannot be the problem as it works perfectly with an HD monitor…its all very confusing :S
Ok, I can now navigate the menu using HDMI, progress!
but there still seems to be a resolution problem as it only works with 576p, the other resolutions (720p, 1080i, 1080p) are still giving me a dead screen and a “video not supported”, although I have always had a resolution of 1080 on the same screen.
Must be some sorta rocket science behind this!
derliam,
I feel like we are so close!
If you hook the PS3 to the TV directly with any of the new HDMI cables, does it give you video output correctly?
The symptoms you describe (video resolution capped at 576p) sounds exactly like the behavior that PS3 gives you when it cannot negotiate a secured HDMI connection required for the higher resolutions.
Is there any chance your Philips TV has a firmware upgrade from the website that you could apply that might fix the HDMI negotiation?
If ALL else fails, do you have any other high def TVs available to you ( in another room, or at a friends house ) that you could hook the PS3 to with and without the HDMI switch to at least rule out those devices (PS3, HDMI cable and maybe HDMI switch) as the problem and at maybe narrow down the issue just to the TV?
Hi Riyad,
Again, thanks a lot for your reply!
The new HDMI cable again does not work directly with the TV (so now I have 3 different brand cables – I guess we can rule out a cable problem).
I hooked up the PS3 to another HD TV once directly, and once with the switch.
Without the switch, it was working perfectly – resolution at 1080. With the switch however, I again couldn’t go beyond 576…
Does this mean the switch is no good? After all the HDMI works ONLY with the switch on my Phillips TV, only at 576 but at least it brought the progress…
Sadly I don’t think I can upgrade the firmware on my TV either (Philips 26PFL5322/10 – there’s no digital input, well apart from the HDMI :p)
derliam,
damnit… I was hoping it would be the cable, sorry you have so many lying around now.
It sounds like that switch is a NO-GO, as you said. For whatever reason it’s not passing through the secure connection which the TV will need.
I’m not sure what else to try, it’s possible a recent firmware update to the PS3 changed how the secure connection is established and is incompatible now with your TV.
Is it an older TV? You can try calling Philips and see if they can come out and flash the firmware for you… besides that, I have no other ideas
riyad,
Thanks for ur help, i had to speak with someone from sony and we fixed it over the phone, lost all data on ps3 but atleast it didnt cost me anything, and its like brand new now !! recommend anyone with a ps3 backup ur data on a memory stick.
Cheers
mark,
I’m sorry to hear you lost the data but really glad to hear that the PS3 is back and working again without sending it to sony. Thanks for letting us know how it went.
I have a LG LED 32LE5400-UC model , two HDMI cables , one very expensive , and one standard HDMI cable . I have run several test and everything is fine until i hookup my 250gig PS3 and then ten minutes or so I get black flash that last for about one to two seconds . This does not occur when I use the component cables or any other A/V equipment it’s just the HDMI source . I’ve taken just about every step to procure this problem besides downloading firmware from the LG or SONY site . I’ve also talked to SONY . They told me it’s not a handshake issue and that I should try another HDMI cable . Every thing I own is new and from the factory . I also just bought a TV warranty for 300$ I’m not returning the TV . Do you have any advice for me?
Jason,
This behavior is exactly what happens when a secure HDMI connection cannot be established or when the devices are being stupid with each other and dropping the connection.
My first suggestion is always switching out the HDMI cables first, but it sounds like you already tried exactly that — my next suggestion is to take the PS3 online and make sure the firmware is updated to the latest release.
The next thing is to grab an updated firmware from LG’s site if the PS3 upgrade doesn’t work.
If NONE of that works, the next thing I would try is to pick up an HDMI hub or some other intermediary device that allows HDMI input and outputs HDMI — then plug the PS3 into the hub (or whatever you use, like a receiver) then plug that device into your TV and see if those devices have a better time talking securely to each other than the PS3 and the LG are having.
Sorry I bothered you . You service many people on the internet . I don’t know how you reply so damn fast , but I understand that you deal with many of the same issues . I did fix my problem before you replied , but now the monster representatives are pissed at me for trying to return my cables . I went proprietary with sony HDMI cables . Thank god it’s not a Westinghouse firmware issue .( BAD JOKE ) Your first advice was right though my HDMI cable was acting stupid with my PS3 ! Thanks for helping so many individuals with there tech issues .
ps… I did do research on the TV before I bought the TV besause of advancements in technology since I left to circuit board shops and after I left bestbuy witch was 9 years ago , and we all know sony are some proprietary loving bastards with an outstanding image and high quality products that usually lead the industry standard . Looks like the other proprietary bastards at microsoft are trying to corner this market too . What will Bill Gates try to monopolise next ? Sorry for the tangent . Copyright protection and HDMI interlaced codes have gone to far . People nor technology should not suffer because of greed.
one last piece . why doesn’t the PS2 have skip protection ? didn’t sony create skip protection well before the PS2 was made or the PSone for that matter .
Jason,
Glad it’s working!
Hey guys, very weird problem similar to these that I’d love some input on.
I have an old Samsung TV that has no HDMI port – just a DVI port. I use a DVI-HDMI cable to hook my ps3 up… pretty straightforward – this setup has worked fine for years. Then one day, It stops working, and all I can get is a black screen.
My ps3 works fine on other tvs… the cord works on other TVs also… when I tried hooking a friend’s ps3 up to my TV we encountered the same problem of a black screen. Weirdest of all, when I plug something else into the very same DVI input on the TV, it works fine. So, what could be the cause of this problem? I suspect a firmware update is to blame, but sony of course refuses to take blame. I’ve exhausted every option and was wondering if anyone had any ideas. Thanks!
Dan I’ve been mulling this over trying to think of alternatives for you here — it does sound like an secured HDMI handshake issue, but I can’t think of a great workaround for this shy of trying a different cable (lame, I know) or trying some sort of intermediary device like a receiver to route the connection through so the PS3 can get a secure connection to the device and then the device can forward that through to the TV happily.
That sounds a bit convoluted because it is… I just can’t think of a super streamlined way to get around this with a minor tweak or 5$ item, sorry about that.
I feel like the only sure fix is a new tv, which is a major bummer. thanks for your input…
hey, i have an hdmi cable, and have been using it for about a year. everything worked fine until yesterday when my tv said that there was no input. i unplugged the ps3 and reset it. i went on regular input, and it came up with the message that there was an hdmi input, so i answered yes that i would like to use output with hdmi, and the screen goes black, what can i do?
Logan,
The cheapest and easiest thing to try is to pickup a 6′ HDMI cable from Amazon ($7) and replace the one you are using now and see if that helps.
If that doesn’t help, then the next thing I would try is:
* Make sure your PS3 firmware is fully updated
* See if you can find an updated firmware for your TV and apply that as well
IF none of that works, then the next thing I would try is pickup a HDMI switch (like this IO gear one) and hook my PS3 to it, then hook that to my TV — or if you already have a receiver with HDMI support, go through that, and then see if the picture comes back.
It sounds like the video card on the PS3 is fine — if none of that other stuff works, then I think the HDMI port on it might be shot and needs to be serviced by Sony.
All in all the suggestions above run you less than $30 to try, the cable being the cheapest and fastest thing to test first.
My tv has 1 hdmi input so i bought a hdmi switch. I hooked up my laptop, dish, and ps3 to it and now i can’t get a picture from the ps3. I tried switching the hdmi cables every diferent way and using diferent ports on the hdmi switch with no luck. They will work if i connect the ps3 right into the tv. I also tried the reset trick on the ps3 and updating the firmware. Any Ideas?
Mikey,
Did the video from the PS3 ever work through the HDMI Switch or is the switch new and you are wondering why the PS3 doesn’t work?
Also does video from the dish box and laptop work just fine and it’s only the PS3 with a problem through the switch?
The switch is new and everything else works through it but the ps3. I was wondering why only the ps3 is doing that and if there is something else i can try to get it to work.
Mikey,
If each of the other devices are securely negotiating 1080p connections over HDMI with your TV, then yea there sounds like something fishy with the PS3 and/or how the TV perceives the PS3.
The only thing I can think of (because the hardware seems to work) is to make sure your PS3 has the latest firmware and that your TV also is updated to the latest firmware if your manufacturer provides updates of that kind.
Hi riyad, i took my ps3 upto my bedroom last night to play on that t.v but with the old av scart cables in as it isnt an hdtv. then what i done was when plugging it back into my hdtv downstairs i powered the playstation up wif both old av cables and hdmi cable in on the av channel, so that i could go to the display settings and change it over to hdmi, and once i pressed change i then switched it over to the hdmi channel on the tv to see if it had switched but all i was getting was a black screen with 526p coming up and then when i look back to the av channel the playstation picture is still there but in standard graphics.
Ive tried holding in the reset button for the 2 beeps to reset settings but this doesnt help.
I was thinking maybe my hdmi cable was dodgey but i was able to connect my laptop to tv through it no problem, ive just ran out of idea’s.
My tv’s a panasonic vieria plasma and only a month old so i wouldnt expect there to be a problem with that, plus ive tried all 3 hdmi ports on it and no luck, so im near to giving up.
hopefully u could shed sum light, i would be greatfull! thanks
!
Stuart,
Hmmmm — it sort of sounds similar to derliam’s issue as well. The TV doesn’t sound like a problem (I agree with your assessment), Panny makes solid panels and something that new is going to have HDMI 1.4 support, so no issues there.
While your laptop might have worked with that HDMI cable, is there any chance you can get your hands on another one from a friend or something to quickly test it to at least rule out a better/different cable helping? I only push that as the first step so frequently because it’s the cheapest and easiest thing to test usually, especially if it fixes the issue
NOW, all that being said, the last darn thing I can think about that I’ve seen 1 other person report helped, but is pretty drastic and will kill your saved games (unless you back them up) is to totally wipe and reset the PS3.
I haven’t personally walked through that process yet though, so I can’t help a whole lot with that — I just wanted to throw that out there incase you didn’t mind doing it and were willing to try anything.
But let’s try easier things first…
1. HDMI cable
2. For the heck of it, check Panasonic’s website for an updated firmware for your TV. Let’s just rule that out as well if we can.
thanks very much man, my friend had a spare hdmi cable in the house a gloteck one, looks alot pricer aswel and when i connected it in, the tv picked it up straight away and produces a 1080p picture..perfect! lets just hope it continues this way with no futher problems..thanks again!
whew! stuart I’m really glad to hear that was such an easy fix and you are back up to full resolution gaming.
Hello, I have got a new HDMI cable today and I got home and connected it to the ps3 and the television. I have got a picture up and the quality is great however I am experiencing some problems in the form of flickering, the flickering looks like there is a problem with the wires not being in properly…however I have made sure this is not the case, in some cases the screen goes black and it reloads back up again.
Is this normal, and if not is there a solution?
Callum.
Hey Callum,
Is the flickering very very fast like an old-school TV flickering or getting snow when there was a storm outside, or is it every few seconds, you’ll lose picture then it comes back and so on?
If it’s slower, that is a classic HDCP negotiation problem behavior — that’s the secure connection that HDMI connections establish with the devices they are hooked to — in this case your TV and PS3.
When the connection is flaky or cannot be securely created, it’s dropped and retried… which is the black screens you are seeing — it’s like having a really shitty network connection.
The cheapest thing to try to fix this (And works about 50% of the time) is to get a high quality HDMI cable to try.
I always recommend the $7 6.5′ one from Amazon, it is what I use, and is cheap and works great.
Blue Jeans Cables and Monoprice are great vendors as well for HDMI cables that aren’t stupidly priced too (e.g. Monster Cable)
Or just borrow a friends and give it a try to see if it helps. That’s another fast way to troubleshoot the issue.
yeah thanks very much, I used my brothers HDMI cable, and it works perfectly. I will get the one from the link that you have provided, thanks so much man! Much appreciated
Callum,
Excellent man, glad it worked!
Hi i brought a ps3 a couple of months along with a hdmi cable off amazon and it worked a treat off my samsung HDTV. Sadly, i had a brake in and brought another ps3 along with a HDMI off amazon again but this time with a different brand, however, i cannot get a picture at all with my HDTV.
Ive tried everything, resetting and holding for 5-10 seconds i even took it back to the store to get it checked out, It was working perfect so i brought the HDMI we was using in store. Come back home and again no picture!?
The HD ports work fine on the TV as i have tested them with my SKY HD box and pictures fine.
Using the composite cablewires, ive tried to go through “display setting” and changing the connection to HDMI; switch to that TV setting a get a blank/black screen. When I unplug everything and assemble it together i get the message “HDMI detected would you like to use it?” select yes and still get a blank screen. When i do, i get a display information 1290×8000 @ 60 hz (if that helps).
Im just lost for ideas
I have also updated the firmware on my TV but still no effect.
Lucas,
Very very strange… it sounds like you did all the right due-diligence with your troubleshooting.
This is the dumbest suggestion ever, but humor me… turn the TV and PS3 off and physically unhook them from each other completely… remove the HDMI cable (the new one) from both.
Just for kicks… unplug the power cable from the wall for both so they go into a full power off cycle and not just standbye.
Then wait about 1/2 hour or an hour, and plug them all back in together and power back on.
I know, it’s a really lame suggestion like “reboot your computer!” but I’ve seen 2 people in the last year in this thread that it actually worked for, so it’s worth a try I figure
If that doesn’t work, the only other thing I can think of is doing a full reset/reinstall of the PS3 — 1 other guy in the thread here have reported that it solved his problems for him and the Sony Support tech walked him through it.
You’d need to back your game data up on a USB drive before doing it though so you don’t loose it.
Sort of a big bomb approach, but I think that’s the only other thing to try before assuming something is wrong with the TV and the PS3 not liking each other, and that would really suck.
thanks for the response Riyad, will get back to you with results as soon as i can.
I have a Samsung UC6300, full 1080p. Here’s my issue.
When I power on the PS3 and it gets to the menu screen it wants to auto config itself with the HDMI. I select yes and then the menu becomes 1080p and looks great. However when I reboot the PS3 the system never comes back, it stays black. When I reset the video by hold down the power button I then go through the same thing as stated above. The TV is 1080p and the PS3 blu-ray works great, but the menu is acting very wierd. Both systems have the latest firmware. The HDMI cable is fine because I swapped it out with another one that I know is working.
This seemed to have started with a netflix streaming disc as I seem to remember before putting that in my menu stated at 1080p even after a reboot/restart. I have put everything back to factory defaults…….I think. Anyone have any ideas here? I’m stuck.
Dan, is the issue that the PS3 basically forgets it’s video settings on every restart and you have to forcibly reset it so it goes back to 1080p each time?
Yes, but sometimes the screen never comes back and I have to do a video reset. I ran through your steps above and plugged in the RCA cables. I also restored all the defaults of the PS3 to factory, powered on to go through video through A / V, connected to HDMI3 on the TV, before it was on HDMI2……So far things seem okay, but this was late last night so didn’t really test that much.
Still not sure why this is happening, it’s almost like the HDMI lost its secured connection somehow. I’m baffled.
well I noticed my game did this once so I jus unplugged my hdmi cable switched it around and then changed ports on the tv..but I noticed after I did this some games show up 1080 p but then I go 2 play another game and the resolution switches back 2 720 or 420 p…. so I go to my game settings to display mode and do the custom settings and uncheck the 720p and then the game shows up n 1080 p. I thought that once u set the settings on the display it should automatically no wat output to play in?????? I’m stumped I just wanna know how to keep from having to changing it and shy does it do this???? Thanks
starr,
Great question — that is actually very normal. Not all games run in full 1080p resolution — that’s a resolution of 1920×1080 on a video card that is more or less equivalent to an NVIDIA 8800 series from 3-4 years ago.
That is a pretty high resolution to pump out at 30+ FPS, so what a lot of developers do is actually write their games to run at 720p (1280×720) which is still considered “HD”, but a lot less graphics bandwidth to be pumping out giving them a bit more headroom to mess around with special effects, physics, etc… anything else that is computationally intense.
When you leave all those resolutions selected, you are telling the PS3 “just run the game at whatever it’s native resolution is”, and that is why some run at 1080, some run at 720, and so on.
When you uncheck ALL of those except 1080, all the PS3 is doing is upscaling the image before sending it to your TV, so it’s a sort of “fake” 1080p.
The more interesting aspect of this up-scaling business is that it HAS to happen on any signal less than 1080 anyway, because a typical 1080p-capable HDTV only has 1 resolution: 1920×1080.
That is the only resolution it can display, so any signal you send it, it is internally scaling up to fit that screen regardless of what it gets.
You give it a 720p, 480p or 320 resolution, and right before displaying that image, the TV is upscaling it to 1920×1080.
So in your case of unchecking the other resolutions on your PS3, you have just off-loaded the up-scaling step from your TV to your PS3, but not changed the behavior or quality of the picture being displayed as one of the devices in your chain (PS3 > TV) is still upscaling each frame to fit your TV screen.
The short version of what I’m saying is that “it doesn’t matter”, go ahead and leave all those resolutions checked and just know that some games run in different resolutions and that is OK. Nothing sinister is going on and your configuration isn’t messed up or anything like that.
Good question though, I’m glad you brought it up!
Well thanks a lot….glad that u could give me a better understanding of the situation!!! I will definatley use ur advice and keep this site bookmarked for future reference .
i used to play on a dvi – hdmi monitor
and then when i try to play it on a CRT tv
it goes blank screen
so i try playiing at dvi hdmi monitor back, it goes blck too
what do?
i ticked the 1080p resolution put my tv can only do 1080 i the screen went black and i tried everything to fix it any sugestions
calum,
If your TV only supports 1080i, there is no avoiding that. Setting 1080p on the PS3 only allows it to output an incompatible format to your TV which is why it’s going black.
after fixing my ylod problem … the ps3 turns on… but no image apears .. only a black screen… the bad part is that only my hdmi port works and i don’t what to rush in doing something of those above.. so what do u recommend? thx
luga,
The recommendations above are the only recommendations I have — they are spelled out pretty clearly from easiest to hardest though, so you aren’t doing the crazy stuff first.
Also the only one that is potentially destructive (resetting the PS3) is clearly spelled out as such. The rest are all just configuration or hardware tweaks to your setup to see if you can get the picture back.
The easiest place to start, is a new HDMI cable.
Hai Riyad,
I’ve got also big troubles to fix a problem with my ps3. Finally i found this site/blog where’s some support. I’ve read your post and tried almost everything to fix it but nothing works so far.
My problem: AV video output on tv is ok. But when i want to connect to an monitor with hdcp support (tried 2 different monitors an LG and a Samsung) the only thing i see is a black screen. Bought 2 different hdmi cables yet. One with an hdmi to dvi and one hdmi /hdmi. Both give the same results…nothing. The stranged thing about it is that the first time i connected my monitor to the ps3 the ps3 came up with a screen that says there was een hdmi device detected. At that moment i had good output to my monitor, but then i plugged it out en later on and since that moment it never showed up again with that detection screen. Example: when i manual select hdmi in the display menu and i connect my hdmi cable, after 30 seconds it came back in the xmb but on some sites i read that you than can select your output resolution,(720p/1080i/1080p) but i see nothing?! Do you have an solution? Or maybe some other visitor of the site?
Things i’ve tried out:
- Bought my ps3 12 day’s ago
- fw 3.41
- used different cables and monitors (hdcp support)
- Connect both av and hdmi / only hdmi
- different kind of resets:, reset to factory defaults, hold power button in standby mode for 10 seconds
- Hold it in standby mode till it shuts down and than start it up
- visited a dozen of websites but with no result
- i am really disappointed is this product of sony. I’m almost sure that i’ve got an handshaking problem! Don’t want to spent a lot of money to fix a brand new product. Thats the reason i’ve not bought a hdmi switch yet. I can’t imagine how the switch can solve the problem. But it’s the only hope i’ve got yet.
Ronald,
It really does sound like you did EVERYTHING… damnit.
Are the two cables you tried sufficiently different? I mean are they physically different so we could assume we tried relatively differently constructed cables and can rule that out? If they are somewhat similar/thin/cheap feeling, than getting a new HDMI cable from Amazon is the cheapest next-step ($7), no need to go to the HDMI switch yet.
Do you ahve access to a friends TV that you could try the PS3 on?
Out of curiosity what are the model numbers of the two monitors you are trying to connect the PS3 to?
Thanx for your fast feedback Riyad. Yes, i really tried everything
Not sure the cables are physically different but i found it weired that the very first time i connected the monitor with the ps3, i’ve got a good picture on it.
Bought the 2 cables from different manufactors at different stores, both about ten euros. The cable that Dan recommended(see comment below) is to expensive for me just to try it out.
My last option is to buy the one from amazon, If you are sure that cable has proven itselfs, i would give it a change. Hopefully i will get the same as you guys (i’m from the netherlands).
No, i don’t have access to a friends HDTV to try it out.
The model numbers of the monitors i’ve used so far:
- lg‑w2261vg
- samsung t220
I will let you know.
yours sincerely,
Ronald
Will this be the same? http://tinyurl.com/34uklnc
Ronald, yep that is exactly what I am running.
RESOLVED:
I had purchased one of the new monster cables which appears to have been causing my HDMI / Black screen problems all along. I have since purchased an HDMI PS3 Monster cable and have not had any issues for weeks.
DISCLAIMER: I have a huge amount of distain for the Monster company and the $99 it is charging for a $5 HDMI cable. While that worked for Dan, please keep in mind you can get something that works just fine off of Amazon, Blue Jeans Cables or MonoPrice for literally 1/7th the price.
I just wanted to add that so anyone coming here out of frustration doesn’t think they need that Monster cable in order for things to work — there are plenty of cheaper ways to get it to work without funding that stupid company.
Guys here is my setup,
Desktop –(wireless)–> PS3 –> Onkyo Receiver (Pass thru HDMI) –> TV (Sharp AQUAS) …
It was working great since last 6 months, since past few days i am noticing that; while watching TV screen goes blank for few seconds then… tv reveives the hdmi signals (TV shows the message for receiving HDMI signals) and resumes…..
it used to happed once a day then started happening more frequently… now delays
are more than a minute or so….
but it comes back……
so i am not sure whether it is my TV’s issue or PS3′s or my Receiver….
is there any solution… has anyone faced similar problem…. ?
Thank you guys!
RK,
My recommendation would be to wait until it gets worse, then connect the PS3 directly to the TV (bypass the receiver) and see if it keeps happening, if it doesn’t, then you know it’s the receiver… if it DOES keep happening, then try a new cable (I know it seems like a lame suggestion, but it’s the cheapest and easiest thing to try next).
Hai Riyad, a couple of days ago you asked me some questions about which monitors i’ve tested. Never get any feedback from you about that reply. Today i received my hdmi cable from amazon but this one gives me the same output…nothing but a black screen. (still not optimum mode error on the samsung….)
:’( snif snif, i’ve tried everything…..
Ronald,
Sorry about that — I really just blanked on what to suggest next or why you are seeing blank output. Thanks for testing the cable, if that didn’t work then I’m not sure what else to try besides hooking the PS3 to another device with that new HDMI cable to rule out the PS3 and/or the cable.
But let’s say it was the monitors and there is something wrong with them, do you have any alternative choices, like a living room TV to hook the PS3 to?
Well, I have a really huge problem with my PS3 Slim.
See, it worked like a charm at first. I connected it to the brand new LED TV with a HDMI cable and it worked. Then it worked flawlessly for a couple of weeks. Then, for no reason, the system began taking a LONG time to start up and shut down. At first it was about a minute. Then, after a couple of days, I had to wait for nearly half an hour before it would start.
The weird thing is that it then started fairly flawlessly, displaying a brilliant 1080p picture like always. But then, after yet another couple of days, it just refused to start. The system froze while loading the XMB screen. THEN, after waiting a couple of HOURS, the system started again. And then, when I rebooted, it froze.
I tried the whole software reset thing (pressing and holding the power button until the system shuts down again, then pressing and holding until I hear two beeps close to each other, then finally resetting the system from scratch). This actually solved all of my problems – for a while.
Then Heavy Rain suddenly began acting up while I was playing it for no reason. I managed to get through the game, but then the same damn problem began manifesting itself. Slower and slower startups and shutdowns. Understandably irritated, I tried software resetting again. This time it didn’t work that well. The system started, giving me output through the HDMI cable as it should, but then the XMB menu began mini-freezing every time I made a selection.
I just want to know: Is this something I’m doing wrong, or should I just get the system repaired? I would really like to know whether or not this error is familiar to you.
Thanks in advance.
Fredrik,
If I had to guess, I’d say the hard drive is failing in the device. Normally you’ll see warnings from the PS3 OS like “File corruption has been repaired” or something like that on bootup, but ridiculously long ops like you are seeing is also another classic sign of a failing disk as it continually tries to mark and replace bad sectors and error-correct data reads/writes.
Normally if other pieces of hardware fail (like a motherboard, memory, CPU or graphics card) the symptoms are more absolutely… like failures on boot, or not coming on at all.
I don’t actually know if there is a process for getting your disk status off the PS3, like viewing the SMART+ data from it. But if you are technically inclined, you can pop it out and put it in an external drive enclosure, then hook it to a computer and do a low-level scan on it to see how it’s doing.
You could try calling Sony and asking if there is some official way to check this, or the easiest thing is to send it back to Sony and have them do it for you.
hi riyad i have a problem when i connect the ps3 to my full hd 1080p works perfectly but when i use my yamaha receiver v rx465 (hdmi pass thru)does not give me 1080p,but my xbox 360 if,and to use different cables, use all receiver inputs and does not work thanks for your time
Edy, sorry i wasn’t totally clear on the problem. The ps3 won’t Give you 1080p but the xbox 360 will?
Are you connecting the xbox 360 to the receiver using component cables or an hdmi cable?
hi riyad.
I’m using hdmi, for both consoles, and buy a new hdmi cable for the ps3.
Hello Riyad, i have almost a similar problem to one of the posts that i had read up there and i hope you can shine some light on my problem, so ill try to keep it brief and clear as possible LOL
i own a 23″ LCD 1080i monitor that i always use to play my games on my ps3. i have the 160 gb big ps3′s (not the slim).
i use HDMI on my ps3 always and its always connected to that monitor, yesterday i was playing, and when i had just had enough for the night i went to put my controler away and moved my monitor abit and the screen went black, i checked to see if i had unpluged anything and no, everything is as it should be, so i spent hours trying to figure out the problem, i did the reset thing (hold the button down did the beeps) ( i did this while using the hdmi cable and not the AV cables) and well i finaly got a picture on my screen i was happy but when i was trying to set the setting back to 1080 or any HD setting it wouldent let me, the screen would go black for 30 sec or so and back to the original setting asking me what video seting i wanted to do…
is it that i need a new HDMI cable?
or might it be the HDMI outlet on the back of my ps3?
thanks for hearing me out your input will be greatly appreciated..
Chris, hmmmmmm… This is and odd recommendation, but unplug everything from each other, let it sit that say for 20mins or so, then just try and plug it back up together with a reset and see if it helps.
The reason i suggest that is cause it has worked for folks in the past that were challenged with black-screen nonsense that worked one moment then didn’t work the next.
late late late reply, but my problem was solved when i bought a new HDMI cable, i guess the one i had gave out and well i had to replace it and it started to work just fine… thanks
Chris, really happy to hear a new HDMI cable did the trick.
It seems like i have a similar issue. my television worked fine one day and now nada. A/V works fine but no HDMI. tried the beeps and everything else with no luck.
Hi Guys
I purchased PS3 Slim 2 days ago and able to connect to my TV using HDMI cable every thing works fine no problem, but this does not fully satisfies my requirement
My setup is which is Primary Requirement
PS3 >HDMI>AV(Onkoyo Sr 707)>100 Feet HDMI Cable >Epson Home Cinema Pro-lite 8100 Projector = WORKS when we play the game but PS3 Menu and OS are appearing distorted and flicker
For your information on my AV SR 707 I have my computer is connected using HDMI and it works fine
Any advice and help will be appreciated
Farhan
Farhan, think your issue is the long run hdmi cable. A few years ago I Read through an hdmi cable comparison and the quality of the cable becomes increasing more important as the run gets longer and longer, usually impacting things beyond 20 feet.
I know it isn’t cheap to get another 100ft hdmi cable to test, but you might be able to look into a range extender to do multiple smaller runs or an hdmi-over-Ethernet adapter to try smaller/different runs to address the issue.
I don’t have experience with runs that long so i can only provide alternatives, not an expert opinion on this, you might want to check with a wiring pro on such a long run and see what he would have to say.
Thanks Riyad really appreciate your response,
I have the same suspicion that long cable is the issue and I may have to get the extender which come with its own problems
Farhan, keep me posted with what ends up working.
Hello, i at the moment have a 80gb ps3 and my uncle recommended me a HDMI cable. He bought from ebay i think it was for 4 pounds. I was exited and went up to my room to try and put it in. I have a toshiba t.v and it has a HDMI Option and when i went on it the screen was black and it was only sound comeing out. Do you know what wrong with it?
Bruce, it could be a few things. I would try and follow the suggestions in the original post in-order (easiest to hardest)
Im using monster HDMI and several other HDMI cables but i cant seem to get any video on my t.v. The a/v cables are fine but cant seem to acquire a signal. Im at wits end. Do you think a sledge hammer will help.
I have thios problem to ive tried the 6-10 sec tactic and i buyed other hdmi kabel what now?
Robin, can you give me some more info about your problem… did it start randomly or has the PS3 never worked? Did you replace the PS3 or the TV recently and now it doesn’t work or something else happen?
I purchased ps3 recently and for the first time I planned to use it with my bravia hdtv. So I purchased a zhq hdmi category 2 cable 1.3 c using which I connected my ps3 to bravia . On connecting, I can see that HDMI is detected but there is nothing else in the screen, there is no xmb menu, except for the message saying hdmi play station 3 at the top. While if i use a av cable, everything works perfectly fine. Where could the problem be? pl advise.
I’ve been using my PS3 without problem for 11 months. I just tried starting it up tonight and my tv won’t detect a signal. The TV reads “no signal” which the screen it shows me prior to turning on the PS3. The PS3 comes on, I can see it detect wireless internet and when I use the controller I can see the lights flash as I hit certain buttons. I just don’t get a signal. Do you think it’s the HDMI cable or perhaps my video card?
Michael, it is hard to tell, but a new HDMI cable is the cheapest/easiest thing to replace and test — if that doesn’t do the trick, the next easiest thing to do is take it to a friends house or another TV and plug it in and see if it’s broadcasting a video signal… if that doesn’t work, sounds like it might need to get serviced by Sony
THANK YOU!!! GOD BLESS U!!
my ps3 it dosent want to work i turn it on and the tv is black and i but the hdmi cable and dosent want to work
One thing I was told by Sony was to just unplug the tv for a few minutes so it can reset itself. Plug back in and you should be good to go. Establishing a new hd connection with the ps3 should work…………………until the next time it goes out
Rock, as stupid as that workaround sounds, a few people here have reported that it actually worked… I still don’t know why =/
my problem is that my ps3 has always been plugged in to our main tv in the family room with an HDMI cable. When we try to take it to one of our other tvs we can’t ever get a signal. they are all HDMI. We’ve tried holding the power button down, we’ve tried 3 tvs (all HDMI) and the only one it works on is the one we originally plugged it in to. any suggestions?
lulu, unfortunately I have no idea why the PS3 only works on one TV. Are you letting it stay unplugged and off for a few minutes between moving the TVs?
I have been using my PS3 via HDMI for years. Last time it was moved was a year ago when I moved into my house. It’s been hooked up and working fine ever since then. Three days ago, I watched a Blu Ray movie on it just fine, no issues. Today, I turn it on and can’t get video or audio to output – it’s been connected to my Sony receiver which is a pass-through and then connected to my HDTV. I’ve tried other cables, connecting the PS# to the TV directly, and even attaching the standard-def yellow/white/red cables and doing the reset, to no avail. I’m lost and frustrated. Can anyone help me? Or at least tell me what’s going on?
Ryan, if not even the composite cables are giving you any output it sounds like the PS3 might need to get serviced… it sounds like you did all the due diligence that I could think of.
Hi,
My PS3 is not working on my monitor but works on my cousins television, I am using HDMI.
My monitor works fine using a HDMI on my PC.
I have tried 2 different ps3s which work elsewhere but not on my screen.
I have also tried a new cable and this has not worked either.
Any suggestions
Thanks
Tehmoor
Tehmoor — thankfully it sounds like the PS3 is OK, just can’t establish a secure connection with your monitor which MIGHT be rectified with a firmware update if your monitor offers it… and make sure your PS3 is fully updated as well.
Lastly make sure it’s unplugged for about 10 mins before trying it back on your monitor again… for some stupid reason that works occasionally.
Hi there,
i have read most of the posts on here and i have tried pretty much everything but i am not sure if people had the exact same problem as me so im posting just in case.
well my 60gb ps3 worked fine up until today, i turned it on and it worked fine i tried to sign in to psn i couldn’t sign in (i didn’t know the psn was under maintenance) so i tried 2 more times, on the 3rd attempt the system crashed so i held down the power button to turn it off.
After turning the ps3 on again i got no video or sound from the ps3, it turns on fine but nothing else happens. I tried most that is mentioned here including:
taking out the power and hdmi cables and plugging them back in after 10 mins
i tried my ps3 on a friends tv and it doesn’t work, switched hdmi cables with my friends working hdmi cable it didn’t work, my friends xbox was able to use my hdmi cable.
here is the weird part that i dont get:
i switched to the old school av cables and it wouldn’t reset the settings,
i held the power button whilst the ps3 is on and waited for the beeps, the 1st set of beeps was ment to turn off the ps3 so i held on, after about 10 secs the next beep just turned off the ps3.
i tried holding down the power button from when the ps3 is on standby
i held down the button until i heard the 2nd beep, usually this resets the video settings and it works but not this time, nothing happens at all.
So i tried again and i held down the button longer and a ps3 menu came up with options to restore to default settings, restart the ps3 etc.
I tried all the options on that menu aswell and nothing works.
i dont think its the cables or my tv nor do i get the signs of a busted video card, so i’m completely stumped
Im going to leave the ps3 for tonight and hope that it works tomorrow, I hope that maybe you may have a solution to my problem if not i will have to give sony a call….
thx in advance
Problem solved, my ps3 was just being annoying and stopped working on me, i restored it to factory settings and updated to 3.5 and it worked fine from there onwards
Ian, just saw this followup, glad to hear it!
Ian, sorry for the late reply, but it sounds like you tried literally everything I could possibly think to try. I hope the issue rectified itself?
Thanks for the help I was getting pissed that it wasn’t working. Playing games in HD on the full screen is a wonderful thing.
hello i have a problem with no video output, but i do not think it is the video chip of the ps3 because if i go into safe mode i get video and i have tried all 6 options in safe mode but every time it completes and reboots i have no video just sound, or on occasion i may get the wavy live on the screen but then the video stops like it locks up except if i use my controller i can hear clicks while i navigate left or right. i have 2 ps3′s and the other one works fine with the same hdmi cable? after doing a hard reset on the system i get the screen asking to switch to the hdmi output and i select yes then it comes back up in full hd and i select keep the settings and it reboots back to a blank screen? it really is driving me nuts. any help would be appreciated! thanks!
I have solved the issue. Press and hol the power up button until it beeps. Connect using a/v cables with HDMI connected. Enter yes to use HDMI connection. Move TV input to HDMI. Shut off tv an re-start with PS3 still running.
Henry you are the man. I tried everything I could find on the web and thought it was hopeless. Give it up to simplicity.
Thank you
Glad it worked. I was pulling my hair out. I used a little common sense and past experience. I was trying to play an iPod through the AV 1 audio input. It didn’t work until I plugged in a video signal. I knew there was a handshake needed to close the loop. I hope this helps lots of people.
Thank you Henry, this helped me out as well! Just turn the tv off and on… wonderful.
(by the way: unplugging everything and wait longer than 10 minutes did not work in my case)
I received the black screen of PS3 death. No video output. I then tried all the fixes suggested. I had to load a software upgrade for my television before I could be able to receive the video connection between my PS3 and my television. I was working with a Philips. After the software upgrade, it fixed the issue and made the PS3 actually work better than before.
Thank you for your blog! Unplugging everything and waiting worked for me. I’d unplugged it and turned it off without success, so I was dubious that unplugging everything would make any difference. But it did, worked like a charm!
A few days ago, I started playing my xbox360. And before I used to hook up 360 with the same hdmi cable, but today I did the same thing and now my 360 won’t play nor my ps3????? I followed step by step what you have said in your blog and I still get the same ol black screen I even when and bought two separate hdmi cables for my system and nothing! My ps3 hdmi cable would work with my other flat screen, but the 360 won’t read it!! I don’t if is the tv because I hook my camara which has an hdmi input and it worked fine! Please help me!!! I’m going banana here trying to fix this problem
I have solved the issue. Press and hold the power up button until it beeps. Connect using a/v cables with HDMI connected. Enter yes to use HDMI connection. Move TV input to HDMI. Shut off tv and re-start with PS3 still running.
thanks Henry this fixed my issue also now i can get back to gaming (:
thank you henry thats the only method that worked for me, i thought my hdmi output was gone for good
Hello, I have been reading through these posts and have tried many of the solutions to no avail. Recently my Audio/Video output stopped working and I have the blank screen when trying to use HDMI. I have tried multiple (4 Different brands) HDMI cords and they all work on other devices. The two HDMI input slots on my TV work when I use them with other HD devices. Before trying the video reset I have unplugged everything from the TV and wall. When I do the reset and have the standard AV plugs in, it says it recognizes and HDMI and asks if I would like to switch. When I click ok and switch to the correct input on my TV, it is still blank. So it does recognize the HDMI. Also, I have tried it on another HD TV and it worked fine. When I brought it back to my TV I could still only use it in 480P. I have tried switching it through the “display settings” and it still is blank. I will also note that I have tried all but one option in safe mode. The only option of the 6 I have not tried is the one that deletes all of your save data. I don’t know what else to do. Any advice would be great. Thanks ahead of time!
I forgot to mention that I have been running my PS3 on this TV for about two years with no complication.
Josh, it sounds like you did all the right tests and the good news is that the PS3 is working (you mentioned it works on other devices). There is 1 more test to check though, grab another HDMI high def device and plug it to your TV and make sure it can output 1080p and your TV accepts it.
If THAT works, then unplug everything, let it all sit unplugged for a few hours then plug them back in again and see if that works.
If it doesn’t (and at this point given all the testing you’ve done, I don’t have high hopes) maybe check your TV website and see if a firmware update is available for your television.
If none of that works… just make sure the PS3 is updated and then pray a whole bunch
I am starting to think it may be the TV itself. I tried using my Apple TV which uses HDMI and it worked fine. Everything is update to 3.5. The TV was bought in 2007 (60″ SXRD KDS-R60xBR1 projection). From what I have been reading is that this problem seems to be happening to a lot of people. They generally have been replacing their HDMI boards at a hefty cost. This still has not resolved the issue for many.
Sounds like it could be an issue with the board or an HDCP error for whatever reason. Unfortunately the TV does not have any firmware updates for it as their is no USB or other storage device.
I am going to leave everything unplugged overnight and hope for the best. I appreciate your help thus far. any more suggestions or ideas would be great!
Josh, I have my fingers crossed but I’ve heard some trouble with HDCP and that set as well (not to mention the green-blob issue that is still our #1 commented story of all time). Keep us posted.
So I picked up some component cables and it is working again perfectly. It is my TV. At least my other HD devices work so there is no need to replace the TV. I would like to thank you for your help and quick responses. This forum is the best I have found for these type of problems.
I hope this set of posts helps someone else going through a similar problem.
Thanks again!
Josh, really glad to hear that there is a fallback plan that works (without going all the way down to 480p), thanks for following up.
FYI-I posted this:

I have solved the issue. Press and hold the power up button until it beeps. Connect using a/v cables with HDMI connected. Enter yes to use HDMI connection. Move TV input to HDMI. Shut off tv and re-start with PS3 still running.
Confirmed fix!
Hi,
well friends, i got my ps3 with my lcd 32″ hd (720p) and my hdmi cable, all worked fine, i recently bougth a new tv, lcd 27″ full hd(1080p). well, my problem was raised when i turn off my ps3 and unplugged it from the full hd tv and then pluggedin on the hd tv, the screen stayed black with no sound, but the game was still playing (no signal). After that I changed the ps3 to the other tv and worked fine. I started to realised that the problem was the resolution, and just configure muy ps3 to work with 720p of signal output, this allowed me to play in 32″ hd tv.
this problem was solved (since 3 weeks ago until now) and keep working well.
i hope this can help you, I was thinking on fix my ps3.
After reading all of these comments, I then remembered I had updated my ps3 on a different tv. prior to the update the screen was a little fuzzy and after the update the screen looked better, showing it did an output/connection update, which is probably the reason the connection isn’t working with the tv I have now.
I realize this post is a few years old, but I’m having an incredibly strange issue with my PS3 and having little success in finding someone with the same issue. I’ve had my 1st generation 60GB PS3 hooked up via HDMI ever since I’ve had it and only in the last year or so have I started having weird issues with not getting any video or sound upon starting up the PS3. My TV will simply report “No or weak signal” and it’s not until I start fiddling with the cable itself and/or the settings on my receiver (not actually changing settings, just switching between different modes, and then back to where its supposed to be) do I finally get both the video and audio, though sometimes only 1 at a time to begin with (usually audio) until I, say, unplug the HDMI cable from the PS3 and then plug it back in.
When the audio DOES kick in I get a horribly loud sort of digital crackling noise emitted from all of my speakers. Then… clarity. Sound and video both function just fine for whatever I want to do on my PS3 with, as far as I can tell, perfect clarity. I’ve tested another HDMI cable only to find the same thing happening. I’ve also tried plugging the PS3 into another port in my receiver to no avail (the other HDMI device hooked into my receiver, my DVR, seems to work just fine).
I fear the HDMI port on my PS3 is possibly sort of half-broken… Has anyone else run into this?
(Another thing that I feel like just started happening is my receiver switching audio modes a lot while watching a blu-ray or playing a game, between menus or previews, etc… For instance, I can be at the main menu for a movie with sound working, then start the movie and I’ll hear the audible “click” of my receiver switching to another mode, then I’ll stop the movie and I’ll hear the click again, etc… This isn’t the biggest deal, but I just don’t remember it happening so often before.)
So, just a quick update.. I just tried it again and turned the PS3 on and off several times between switching to different devices on my receiver (Xbox 360, Wii, and DVR), the PS3 seemed to boot up just fine.. Maybe the new cable is helping? Or maybe the PS3 is just “warmed up” now and I won’t have a problem again until I try again in some amount of days? I really don’t know… Hopefully the problem’s gone, but I doubt it.
Jeff, have you tried to plug the PS3 directly into the TV and removed the receiver from the equation?
No, I haven’t tried that yet, but if it continues to happen that will be my next step…
If it is the receiver though, then… what do I do? It’d never had a problem before the last few months and it still doesn’t seem to have any problems with the several other things I have connected into it right now.
Jeff if it turns out to be the receiver, then you might want to double-check if it’s the receiver in general or just a specific connection on the back of the receiver that the PS3 is hooked to that is giving you trouble. If it’s the particular plug, you can just use another one, or if you don’t have an extra HDMI plug, pickup an HDMI hub.
Alternatively if your TV has extra inputs, you can run the HDMI from the PS3 straight to the TV on a different input, and then do optical audio out of your PS3 to your receiver; you then have the added work of switching two inputs when you want to play the PS3 though (if you have a harmony/universal remote, this is trivial thankfully)
Those are the few different approaches I can think of.
Unfortunately, it looks like my receiver is dying now… either that or I played around with too many options and it finally backfired.
Strangely, I actually thought things were better for awhile… My PS3 seemed to be working on startup and no other problems were present. Eventually, though, it presented the same symptoms as before, and now my cable box acts a little funky too… It’s not quite as bad as the PS3 is, but now when I use my “Watch TV” activity on my remote (which is basically only different from the “Play PS3″ by using a different input on the receiver), I’ll often get sound, but no picture. To get picture I have to hit “guide” or “Channel Up/Down” a few times before it seems like it registers that there’s a video feed coming through as well.
Kind of unfortunate… This is an Onkyo TX-SR606 which I “upgraded” to from I believe an HT-R510 that I had been used for a lot longer… and now it appears to be dying or something.
Jeff that is a major bummer. A borked receiver is one of the bigger pains to replace just because it’s your hub of all device connections. It does sound like it’s gone stupid on you though, not recognizing incoming video signals and what not correctly.
If the *audio* portion of the receiver still works, I could recommend you pickup is a DVDO Edge (by Anchor Bay) to run all your video inputs into (keep running the audio to the old receiver if it still works). Make sure the DVDO Edge supports the inputs you need though — it does some nice-ass video processing and is relatively cheap. It would also allow you to keep using your receiver instead of heading out and spending another handful for a new receiver.
If you just want another cheap receiver though, you could spend the $400 or so on a new Onkyo that will do pass-through for you instead of the DVDO Edge. Just some options I could think of in your situation.
So, I finally found some threads that look like they have the same issue as me and it appears there’s a defect with my Onkyo model:
http://www.highdefforum.com/high-definition-receivers-recorders-players-tivos/106255-onkyo-tx-sr606-hdmi-switching-headache.html
Really disappointing as my receiver is just out of warranty. I’m going to call them anyway and see if they’ll be nice to me since it sounds like a design defect. Otherwise hopefully my credit card “extended warranty” will work or I’ll likely have to get a new receiver, as supposedly this part is basically as expensive as a new one.
I don’t mean to monopolize this, but I thought I’d just update on the situation…
I called Onkyo and they suggested I “reset” my receiver, which is, granted, a pain in the neck since it resets it to factory default and erases all of the setup that you’ve done. This was done by holding down the “VCR/DVR” button and then hitting the Power/standby button. It briefly says “Clear” and then restarts.
I actually saw people complain in forums that this was a non-solution, but amazingly… it’s working so far. I have a feeling that the problem will develop again over time, but this is a far better option than having to get it serviced for probably more money than I paid for it in the first place. Hopefully it continues to work… I’ll update here again if it fails again or if I’ve had no problems within another week or so. If other people are having similar problems, though, and are willing to clear their settings you may want to try this.
Jeff, thanks for following back up (I was reading through the backlog of unread comments so in my last reply I hadn’t seen yet that you replied). As an Onkyo owner the reset tip is actually pretty handy for me to keep in my bag of tricks. Hope I don’t have to go down that road though.
Jeff, great find. Keep us posted on what Onkyo does for you (and what you end up doing).
thank you! i plugged my ps3 in hdmi at my buddies house and got home and it owuldnt work with composite but i got it to work thanks
Hi, i disconnected my ps3 from my tv which I had connected with hd cables but now that I connected back it won’t not pick up signal. It works fine with the regular cables but I want to get back on hd cables. Help me please..
I’m in the same boat. Any help would be appreciated. I have already tried to “reset” my PS3 but no luck in getting the HDMI back. Composite cables work fine but I would like to get my HDMI back.
I’ve followed the above instructions and worked fine and the TV is displaying 1080p… but when i unplug the composite cables everything just went black……….
I’m sure I’ve turned the TV to HDMI input……… and I’m sure the TV accepts 1080p…..
it turns out the HDMI cable wasn’t working quite well… i changed to another one and everything is fine now…
Thanks everyone!
Most excellent, glad to hear it Mike.
Mike, very strange. The composite cables cannot transmit a 1080p signal, so if you were getting 1080p that was over the HDMI cable (now *component* cables can, but the composite cables that come with the PS3 that are red/green/yellow cannot).
If you plug it all back in, is the TV happy and keeps showing you the 1080p signal?
hey, i have the old 80gb fat ps3 model. A few days ago, i suddenly stopped having any picture. Just like that, overnight, literally. Just the night before i was on my ps3 and everything worked just fine. I have always been using the standard video cables, yellow, red, & white, occasionally and very rarely i would use component , green, blue, red, white, red cables whenever i would watch movies on the living room’s Tv that supports 1080i.
I have tried to reset the setting by holding down the power button, more than a few times. After about 2 hours i gave up and drove to radio shack and bought new AV cables, but when i got home and tried them, still no picture. I went to a gamestop and bought the original Sony brand ps3 AV cables and still nothing. Today after some searching i dug up my component cables and tried it on the HDTV in the living room and still nothing.
Is it possible that the jack/slot/receiver that gives out the AV/component cables doesn’t work? Or is there other methods besides unplugging and resetting the video to get picture?
The only option i have left is using an HDMI cable, but my current tvs don’t support HDMI. I am going to go to a buddy’s house to troubleshoot using his HDTV and HDMI cables.
Leo,
As far as next-steps, taking the PS3 to your friends house and trying it with the HDMI cable is a good idea. If it works, at least you know the graphics hardware is still working.
If it doesn’t work at his house right away, try following the reset/troubleshooting methods above in the original post (resetting the video mode, using both the composite (PS3 AV cables) and HDMI cable plugged in and see if you can get that working.
If NONE of that works but you can hear sound output from the PS3 like you are at the XMB scrolling around so you know it’s actually working, then you need to send it in to Sony to get it serviced. If you don’t even hear any audio output from the XMB then your PS3 might have other issues… either way it would need to go back to Sony at that point.
Leo,
This is almost the exact same thing that happened to me. I have a “fat boy” 80gb PS3 and I’ve always used an HDMI cable. I can’t think of any problems that have come up recently, but the other night the PS3 told me I needed to do an update. So I let it do it’s thing when I went to bed. Went to use it yesterday, and all I get is a black screen. No sound.
My t.v. would normally be blue if it weren’t getting a signal. But the screen would turn black when I turned on the PS3 like it was getting some type of signal. So after trying all the resetting and safe mode to no avail, I used the old factory red, white, and yellow cable. Now I could get picture and sound at low res.
Tonight, I’m monkeying around trying to get the HDMI cable working, but it’s weird. It’s like the new PS3 update caused the HD video to stop working.
Tried all of that. No picture, and no sound. PS3 won’t turn off normally either. Have to hold down the power button for at least 10 seconds. Tried all combos with HDMI in and out, AV in and out. Together in and out. Game disc in and out. Any other suggestions?
Unfortunately no, that’s all I got. Sounds like it needs to go to the Sony Hospital
hi,
i’m dealing an unexpectable problem with my PS3. i was playing ps3 2 nights ago and since yesterday, when i started the ps3 the screen went black.
my tv which it was connected is a Sony (KDL-40) and i was playing on that tv for the last 1+half year.
i have 3 lcd tvs at home. Sony with NOT an Mpeg4 (which it was always connected with my ps3), a 32 Samsung which i bought it this year and it has the mpeg4, and a smaller samsung which i bought it 2 years ago which it doesnt have the mpeg4!
Now, the problem which appeared suddenly, is that the ps3 it doesn not send any signal to my Sony and to my smaller Samsung (both with out the MPEG4), but it works to my other Samsung ehich has the mpeg4.
Note that i have connected my brother’s ps3 on all 3 tvs and it was working!
and i also try to connect my ps3 to my brother’s tv (without mpeg4) and it was NOT working.
This a definitely my ps3 problem! and not from my tvs because my ps3 was working ok on all my three tvs till last night.
Does anybody have an idea what happend?
does anybody know what settings shall i change to ps3 menu to make it work?
If i format the ps3 system would do anything?
please reply me if anyone does because this a strange and a sudden problem
thank you
the best way to reset video settings is to press the on button on the ps3 and hold it down until the ps3 powers back off again! then switch it off in the back of the console count out about 30 seconds and turn it back on in the back. this time turn the ps3 on in the front let off the button for 2 seconds and then press it again and hold it till you hear 3 consecutive quick beeps. then your video settings have been reset and it should say a hdmi connection has been found do you want to use it? click yes and you should be good to go! however some systems suffer from firmware updates gone bad or other hardware problems in which case this will not work! it is my firm belief that if you have a ps3 that works the way it should now, do not update the firmware!!! more ps3′s have been ruined by bad firmware updates than anything else! just like your computer if everything works why update the bios? it makes no sense! i still dream of the day when i can buy a reliable well built playstation! maybe generation 4 or 5? who know’s? still less issues than an xbox 360 though! pc gaming is still the best way to go! my intel core i5 2500 system with 8 gb of ram and a gefore gts 450 proves this! force unleashed 2 has never looked so good and run so smoothly! the only reason i keep a ps3 around is because sony managed to get me hooked on the god of war trilogy!
Shawn
hi – im trying to play my playstation on my pc monitor – http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-190X6FB-Lifestyle-LCD-Monitor/dp/B000GPPNME/ref=dp_return_2?ie=UTF8&n=340831031&s=computers I cannot seem to get it to work. the monitor registers a connection – but is simply a black screen. I have tried all the hold power for 6 secs until you hear 2 beeps etc but nothing seems to be working.
any help you can provide would be welcome – thanks.
max — I *think* the monitor needs to support HDCP for a secure digital connection to get HD out of the PS3. Does the monitor have multiple inputs, can you try an analog input and see if that works?
the monitor has vga input and dvi – it also has an option when i change the settings with the buttons on the side of the monitor to change the input to analog – but this never works.
so if i was to change the settings on the ps3 so it runs display through a dvi connection it still would not work because the monitor does not support HDCP?
do you know what cable I would need to achieve playing my ps3 on my monitor?
thank you for your fast response – max.
im not really bothered about if it displays HD or not – the monitor was purchased around 2-3 years ago so im pretty sure it cant display HD – but i cant seem to get it to display anything at all.
Ahh ok. When you held down the power for 6-10 seconds and heard the 2nd beep, that resets the output on the PS3 to the composite output (not HDMI). So the problem now is *probably* that the PS3 is outputting video to the output you don’t have hooked to your monitor.
Do you have access to a TV that has HDMI on it? It would be worth a try to get the PS3 configured to output via the HDMI out, then bring it over to your monitor and plug it in… it might downsample or not go above a 480p resolution because of the lack of HDCP, but at least things would be working with the cables you already have.
If you don’t have access to any HDMI display then you need to hook your analog output from the PS3 to your monitor — it’s hard to say which cables you would need without standing there and seeing what you have and what inputs work and what don’t, but that’s the gist of it.
oh and i purchased a HD > DVI cable to link the two up.
Ahh… that won’t pass through an HDCP connection which is why you probably can’t get a signal.
A few years ago, I bought the Sony PS3 80GB (98004). And since that time, I’ve had it sitting in the box (had an old TV from 1995).
A few months ago, bought a Dell ST2210 to replace my Cintiq 20UX (wasn’t using it properly like I had originally intended to).
After some prodding from my friend (she’s playing Assassin’s Creed), yesterday I went out and bought a set of cable from Best Buy (HDMI and Digital Optical Audio, both by Dynex).
Afterwards, I opened up the PS3 box and started the process of getting things cleared out so that I have room for both my shuttle XPC (SN27P2) on one side, and the PS3 on the other side of the monitor (figured easy access to the disks). For the network, I have an Apple Airport Extreme setup.
Now, the speaker set I have with my computer (Logitech X-540) I found out while setting up, does not have the Digitial Audio but the XPC does, thus I plugged it in there; although not sure if that was a good idea?
The computer is using the DVI input; using a nVidia 9600GT. I wasn’t sure if a HDMIDVI adapter was worthwhile, thus did not buy that.
Plugged in the PS3, hooked up the HDMI. Switched the monitor to HDMI mode, then powered up the PS3. Warm air, whee, considering it’s freezing here in Chicago.
There was something about HDMI/Audio and I think I clicked yes.
Aftewards, there was a prompt for English (of course), then setting time/date. During the Time/Date, the screen went black. A short time later, I got the message that the monitor was going into sleep mode. Uh, ok?
Fiddled with the controller (pressing the PS button), shut the PS3 off then turned back on. Black screen then monitor going to sleep. And I don’t think I see the HD activity much if any – or hear it.
When I take the HDMI cable off, I get a message saying HDMI signal not found/lost. And yet when I put it back in, after a few minutes(?), I get the Sleep Mode message from the monitor.
I reset the monitor to the standard Factory setting, I believe.
Earlier this evening, I went to Radio Shack but ended up going to K-Mart to buy another set of HDMI cable (Belkin). Reasoning is, maybe the Dynex is borked, for it has happened before when I bought some Cat5 cables with that brand from Best Buy. Wanted to rule out bad cables, just in case. But as before, the same thing has happened. Blank screen and not much else.
Anything I should try out? Short of buying a new PS3? I’ve no friends nearby with PS3s to try things out. I even stuck a Blu-Ray (Serenity) to see if I can hear/see something in the hopes that was just being goofy. No joy in regards to the Audio/Video.
Kellisanth – a lot of good detail in your post, thanks for posting all that.
If you said “Yes” to the HDMI audio out question, then the PS3 is actually routing it’s audio out over the HDMI connection to your TV.
I wasn’t clear on where you plugged the HDMI – directly into the TV? If so, and you saw output briefly, I actually think the problem might lay with the monitor as opposed to the PS3… do you have access to any other HDMI displays to plug the PS3 to and see if it behaves itself? That would at least rule out one side of the equation.
Hello Riyad!
Sorry, computer at home died thus working on getting a new one built (two computers built in ’07… I should build new ones every 18-24months!).
I do not have access to another HDMI monitor/TV at this time, although that might change later on depending on Profit Bonus and/or Tax Refund. ^_^;;
I plugged the PS3 directly into the Monitor. The monitor works fine for I recently obtained a Sony BDP-350 which works fine in the HDMI mode.
I have other monitors in the house, but they are DVI. No TV presently.
Thanks for the help, pressing the power (for 10 secs) to switch all settings to original default worked for me!
i’ve tried all of the above and my systeme still won’t give me anything on the screen!!!like,i can’t even hear the god damn thing. . .so if any one has anything to tell me then hurry up and right it down!i’m gonna go on tommorrow and hope that there will be at least one damn fucking thing for me to refer to!!!!. .so thanku to anyone who is willing to help me out with this so called “problem” of mine.i haven’t even got to play it in at least ohhh, i don’t know. . .four fucking months and i’m addicted to call of duty modern warfare 2!!!!!!!!!
P.Sand if anyone here has that game with an PSN account(online account) tell me and i’ll add you to my freinds list whenever the hell they right me back with a solution. . .
i nedd a god damn reply as soon as possible
I have a 1st gen 80gb ps3 (without backwards capability) that has no video or sound. Green light and fan come on when it is powered up and I’ve tried the three beeps to get to the system restore screen (over and over again), controller reset, tried two beeps, etc. but still no video or sound. I’ve tried different connections (hdmi and av cables) and different tv’s, one hd and the other sd. Still no video or sound. I also have a 1st gen ps3 (with backwards capability) that works fine on both tv’s using all cables with no problems. Is there a fix that doesn’t require a trip to the repair shop? I’m a novice repair man but if the fix is not to complicated I may be able to repair it myself. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
I got a PS3 (320GB Slim) about 1 and a half months ago and now when I am using the HDMI cable, and play games that are not running at 1080P eg Killzone 2, Mass Effect 2 and a few others I get a Flicker like a TV with no satalite signal and a hissing sound. I am not sure if its the Ps3 or not I tried a different TV and cable and on the different TV I could play 720P games without flicker but if it ran at anything lower it would flicker. I have tried all above with no luck.
Max, I’m not totally clear on your question – most of those games that you mention do not run at a native resolution of 1080p, so 720p is right for those titles. If you are getting a 1080p signal you may have an intermediary device doing upscaling for you.
So if you can get them to run at 720p without flicker, that’s good news. Now there are SOME games that should run at 1080p, I just don’t have a great “Test list” off the top of my head for you to try.
Sorry I was not very clear its a very hard to explain. Basicly my TV will only work on games and blue ray if they run at 1080P, if they dont eg killzone 2 it will lose signal. I use to be able to run anything at every resolution but now only full HD which is really werid its not the TV because I also tried my mates PS3 in it and its fine. I tried my mates TV and HDMI cable which the TV does not pick up any signal at all.
Uh oh…. so your TV with your mate’s PS3 works fine, but your PS3 with your mate’s TV still doesn’t work unless it outputs a 1080p signal?
That sounds odd… have you tried resetting the video settings on the PS3 and setting them back to HDMI? Just hold down the power button for like 10 secs (it’s more like 6 seconds) until you hear it beep the second time, on restart the PS3 will see your HDMI connection and offer to switch to HDMI output to which you can reply “Yes”.
I have seen *1* other time, that the PS3 output settings like this got screwy somewhere in the system, and in some games or modes the output was blank, but in others it was fine. Resetting like this helped that person (they posted here in the thread about 6 months ago if you want to search for it) so I’ve got my fingers crossed for you.
I have tried reseting the PS3, Tried formatting everything possible that I know to fix it. Might just take it back a get it fixed its only 2 months old
I recentlly took my ps3 to a mates house, and we used a hdmi cable there. I dont have a hdmi cable at home, and when i tried the ps3 at home without the hdmi- i just get the black screen.
does anyone know what to do?
Sean, I am assuming that it worked at your friend’s house with HDMI and when you went back home, using the component or composite cables, you just get a black screen right?
You need to reset the video output (it is currently set to output to HDMI), just hold the power switch down for 8-10 secs… after you hear the 2nd beep, let go and restart it. It will show you the default “safe mode” output on startup and should be fine.
I have been watching beauty and the beast(blu-ray) on my ps3 and while playing it flickers on the screen then the screen goes black and a second later it is normal. how can i fix this
Lauren, it sounds like the PS3 and TV are losing and re-establishing their HDCP connection. The first thing I would try to do is replace the HDMI cable with a cheap/better quality cable — if you scroll up to the original post I have links in there for the $7 ones over on Amazon (the Amazon Basic cables should be fine).
If that doesn’t work, make sure your PS3 is updated with the latest firmware and if THAT doesn’t do it, check to see if any firmware updates for your TV exist.
Just bought new PS3 and everything was working fine until i switched back to my old one to retrieve some of my save data. Thats when my picture went black (running hdmi on both machines). So i followed all the tips here i can get an image with the composite it will run on another HD TV just fine and i have tried other cables but my TV just isn’t having it. I unplugged everything and the TV picked something up from the HDMI but still got no picture but it definetly detected the device. Not sure what else i should try except maybe stealing a new TV from somewhere lol.
Rik Ra, because you are switching between two different PS3s I *think* this might have something to do with how the TV does HDCP negotiation and might explain why some people have reported simply unplugging everything and leaving them off for an hour or more then retrying fixed things.
Try this:
1. using composite, get all the data off your old PS3 so you can retire it permanently.
2. Unplug all the PS3 and turn them and the TV off… just for kicks, pull the power from the TV and PS3s too.
3. Wait like an hour, now plug the good PS3 in and power everything up.
See if that does the trick.
Ok I just bought the older model ps3 60gb from Ebay used and received it a few days ago. Looking at the back I saw that it could use an HDMI so I waited to connect it till I bought one from Fry’s today. It wasnt the cheapest but not he most expensive either @15$. I have an older 19” HDTV by AOC with a HDMI area. In addition my TV is hooked up to my ps2(thru an RFU Adapter) a VCR(through Audio/Video Cables) & my Surround sound DVD Player( through Audio/video cables). I plugged it all in and turned it on. Heard the Ps3 working and the lights were on but couldnt find it on the tv. I finally found that the tv had to be switched to HDMI mode, so i did. Then I turned everything off and then back on. For a moment there is a black screen then the tv says “no signal”. I tried the hard power off and the reset and went through all the different comments above and still nothing. I tried using my RFU adapter and at first when on the proper channel thru the tv is goes from static to black screen to no signal. I wiggled the plug in the back a bit and it fluctuated from no signal to static with no signal. But when I plugged it into the ps2 it works fine. I tried looking up my tv to see if it has a firmware update but there was none because the model has been discontinued. No matter what I do I get absolutely no menu options or anything. Ive been looking forward to playing my ps3 for days! Please help!
Jen,
Start with the basics first; pop the composite cables out of the PS3 box (looks like this) and hook that up, hold down the power for the 10 seconds or so and have it reset the video out.
If you CAN get video in that mode, turn everything off, then plug the HDMI cable in to the PS3 and the TV (while the composite cables are still plugged in) and turn it back on.
You should get video and it’ll say something like “HDMI connection detected, would you like to switch to it?” if you say Yes and you can still see an image, then it was successful.
Now you can power off and unplug the *composite* cables and all video will be going out over the HDMI connection.
Hey,
I have tried all the following and still nothin
1, av works – tried display setting, hdmi; but just turns to a black screen
2, tried different cables
3, tried 3 beeps nothing
4, tried new update
Try and hook your PS3, via HDMI, to another device (monitor, a friend’s TV, etc.) that uses HDMI to see if you can get ANY output. IF not, sounds like you might need to send it in.
Thanks fo replying Riyad i have tried unplugging everything for hours but its a no go. Im thinking that maybe i have shorted the hdmi port on my TV or something.
Crap… if you did short it on the TV that is a bummer, you don’t have any other HDMI connections on it? You could use a component cable I suppose, it’s not the end of the world… your TV (most Samsung’s do) might accept 1080p over component… at the least 1080i and I doubt anyone will be able to see the difference.
Thanks for the reply.
It doesnt work i tried another t.v. Im not sure but the HDMI stopped working wen my old t.v’s LED kept on flashng & woudn’t work. Anyhoozizls wat shud i do now buy a new ps3.
Thnks
P.s i live in the UK
If you cannot get output at all on your PS3 then you could send it in to Sony for repair OR if you’d rather not and your TV accepts HD over the component (not composite) connection, you can pickup the PS3 Component cables and try those or if money is no object, sure, you could buy another PS3
Hello, I have a small problem. As you can guess my HDMI isn’t working. I have tried everything you’ve listed above several times. I’ve used multiple cords, multiple display adapters, etc. The weird part is that i’m ONLY not getting video. The PS3 recognizes the cables as being attached and tried to auto-detect but it does nothing. Yet even though I don’t got video, my sound is working perfectly. Any suggestions?
Dog, do you NEVER get video, even out of the composite cables? If that is the case it sounds like you might need to send it in if *none* of the outputs on the PS3 are feeding video to the TV.
That’s a bummer.
Hi, I have the slim PS3 and my son took it to his room and connected it to a regular non hd tv. When I connected it back to one of my hd tvs with hdmi cable I couldn’t get any signal. I tried two different hdmi cables and holding the button for five sec but nothing. I also hooked up the cable box with hdmi and the cable works in hd . Why is my ps3 not working with my hdtv when it used to. I connected the ps3 to another hd tv and I got signal right away.
Al, it sounds like the PS3 is fine if you can get signal on another TV (which is good)… have you tried powering off the PS3 and your TV for an hour (pulling the power cord so it goes totally off) then trying to hook them back together again?
It sounds stupid, I know, but a good amount of people that when they have problems it fixes it… I *think* it has something to do with the devices getting confused and not renegotiating a proper HDCP connection… at least it doesn’t seem to be a mechanical hickup.
I read some things that posted and try everything you advice in some situations before I posted my problem. But yeah I’ll do that and get back at you. Thanks.
I’m having a black screen problem when using the HDMI, I suspect that it started one day where accidentally I turned the power switch off while the ps3 was on, when I turned the PS3 back on it told me that it had been turned off incorrectly and it run like a recovery or something dont remember, after restarting it, and putting in games, The tv screen would flash/flicker like a green flicker/flash for like just one second (handshake maybe?) and the game would start fine after that…
Yesterday I turned on my ps3 and the screen flickered for like a second but it did not go to the xmb menu, tried using the rca (yellow, red, white) connection and the ps3 works fine but not working hdmi. Tried switching to hdmi, it does the green flicker for like a second but stays on a black screen. (On hdmi no sound either)
any ideas??
My problem:
PS3 > HDMI > TV – Works
PS3 > HDMI > Receiver > HDMI > TV – Black screen (input detected) and Cut Outs
PC > HDMI > Receiver > HDMI > TV – Works
TV is Pioneer 4280XD, Receiver is Yamaha DSP 761
Any ideas guys?
jasjeet — that’s a humdinger… your 3rd setup suggests the receiver knows how to handle an HDCP connection, but the 2nd setup suggests it doesn’t… I guess some weird interaction with the PS3 and reciever and alignment of the stars is screwing you up.
The cheapest thing to try would be 2 new HDMI cables, the next cheapest… a new receiver
You are a lifesaver. Thanks so much, it’s good to know there are people out there who can help
i have the blue light only problem (no disc in tray)
switch power on in back blue light comes on
press power or eject (no response no beeps)
HDMI blank (but has signal) and tried all other hdmi cables including my other ps3s one
AV cable blank (no signal)
every time i seach for this on google it comes out a joke
So I am having similar issues to one of the steps that you describe above. When using HDMI to connect my PS3 to my HDMI monitor, the signal comes through with lots of artifacts and weird (i.e. rainbow-esque) colors (although I can still see some of the interface through the artifacts, and the system seems to otherwise be running correctly…).
I came across an HDMI to DVI converter, and used this to come out of the PS3 as HDMI, and go to the monitor as DVI. This signal comes through fine (although obviously without audio…). So this tells me the HDMI on the PS3 is fine, correct?
Secondly, I tried hooking my computer (MBP) up to the monitor through the HDMI port on the monitor, and this works fine. So this ruled out the HDMI port on the monitor being faulty as well…
This is where I am currently. Stuck… Any suggestions? I have tried new HDMI cables without any luck. The signal seems to be getting corrupted somewhere along the way, but both ports on the PS3 and the monitor seem to be functioning correctly.
Thanks for any help you are able to supply!
I left town for about 3 weeks, had my TV (Sony XBR9) and PS3 completely powered off (power supply off). Today, I turned the PS3 on but got a black screen on the TV saying no signal. I held the power button to reset the graphic setting but I didn’t see anything. I unplugged the HDMI cable from the back of the PS3 and plugged into my XBOX 360 and it worked. I then used a different HDMI cable on the PS3 and plugged into a different HDMI port on my TV, still no signal. I know it’s not the cable or the specific HDMI port on my TV that’s at fault. I then hook the PS3 to another TV (Westinghouse) via HDMI and it worked fine. So I know the graphic card in my PS3 is still kicking. Although I had problems playing blu-ray movies, the TV keeps downgrading to 480i then said invalid format. This was fixed by reloading the default PS3 setting. While I’m at it, I also rebuild the database and restored the file system, upgraded to the latest 3.60 firmware. I then moved the PS3 back to my Sony XBR9 via HDMI, still nothing. I then tested it with a composite cable then a component cable, both worked fine. I think something must happened during the HDPC handshake and the connection is never able to establish. I upgraded the XBR9’s firmware to the latest, reset it back to factory setting, still no nothing. I then tried to use a HDMI hub in between, both XBR9 and Westinghouse cannot detect a signal. At my conclusion, something funky related to HDMI is going on between my XBR9 and PS3. I’m really at a loss, do you have any recommendations?
Hi,
I am having similar problem, till yesterday everything was working fine. But today suddenly there is no output in through the HDMI cable. (normal/SD resolution output still works) I took my system to the Sony Service Centre, over there it worked fine again (using same HDMI cable, wires, everything)..now am not sure where is the problem..is it my TV or some setting which am doing wrong at home..my TV/PS3 do detect the HDMI cable..but when I select the HDMI option..the screen goes blank..suggestions will be extremely helpful…also if anyone can tell me if the HDMI cable has its out output resolution (by any chance) which gets automatically selected somehow..help will be very welcome..
it’s the black screen of death. No matter what you do, it won’t come back. I assume you tried all of the stuff I tried? I even took out my hard drive and put in a new one, went to the recovery menu then choose restore PS3 system, which reformats the hard drive. Still nothing. I even got the newer 1.4b HDMI cable for it, still nothing. I think once the HDCP fails, there’s no going back, unless you replace the TV board. Have you tried a HDCP compliant switcher or splitter?
Mike,
I’m having an identical problem to yours…even the PS3 working when hooking it to my Westinghouse TV. Have you found any solutions to your problem? Have you tried another PS3 on the TV in question to see if it is the console itself? If it is indeed your console, I know Sony told me it would cost me $99 to fix it with shipping included. Check my post out below and let me know if it looks familiar to yours.
Thanks,
Ed
I am having a slightly different problem than any of the above. I have a ps3, onkyo 7.1 reciever, samsung led lcd 46” 7000 series. When i first got the ps3 i hooked it up with a sony HDMI cable to my reciever. Everything worked fine for about 10 months. Then it would sometimes take a long time to get picture and audio on the tv when i started the ps3. I would switch back and forth on the reciever from the PVR to the PS3 and it would eventually pick up a signal. Heres how I have everything hooked up:
PVR > SHAW HDMI > reciever >
HDMI > TV
PS3 > SONY HDMI > reciever >
I switched the shaw and the sony HDMI cables but it didnt change anything.
I can now get a 1080p signal on the main menu but when i try and play black ops i get a black screen with no sound.
I tried setting the “Control HDMI” setting on, didnt help.
I tried putting the av cables into the tv that came with the ps3 and i can play in terrible 480i. I unplugged the HDMI from the ps3 and held the power button to get the 3 beep reset. I turned the ps3 back on hooked the hdmi up to the ps3 and changed the display settings to 1080p. I played COD once but the next time I tried i got the black screen again.
Please help me, I have read and watched youtube vids but nothing has helped my problem.
My ps3 is 14 months old so I think its out of warranty.
brockoli (nice nick) — try and replace that cable with a cheap $8 Amazon Basics HDMI cable and see if that does the trick; I think one of the firmware updates changed how the PS3 negotiates the HDCP connection so people that had working consoles suddenly started to see issues months later.
The good news is that your vid card and connection seem fine since you don’t have issues at the XMB, just in-game.
Does it happen with any other games? If not, then that is even weirder… if it DOES, and it only happens “After a while of playing” then it might be a heat issue… is your PS3 well ventilated? If you look at the heat vents, are they plugged up with animal fur or dust or something?
hey i can hear my ps3 but the screen is still black and i know its not the cable cuz i swith it to my tv in my room and it works fine but when i put it on my big screen that happens to me and i bought new cables?
Thank you so much reading this article helped me fix my problem
Ross, glad it helped!
sometimes when playing on my Ps3 using the HDMI cable, the screen either goes green, goes fuzzy, or just goes blank and freezes completely. Taking out the HDMI cable and putting it back in usually fixes it, but only for a few minutes or so. Can i fix this?
Ugg… Noodles that sounds like a heat issue with the graphics card if the video output is shifting and freezing/distorting.
If your PS3 is in a cabinet or something enclosed, take it out and put it out in the open and see if it stops doing that. Additionally, when it fucks up, try and exit the game and sit at the XMB and stop using the PS3, but leave the TV on and see if the output corrects itself… if it does, I think that would lead credence to the overheating issue.
I need help i can’t get my ps3 to show on hd on my tv but it shows on other hd tv an on my tv using av cables I tried every solution and nothing works
I have one of the first PS3s, bought on day of release in the UK ages ago, it has played movies in blu ray fine up until now, I have it linked via hdmi into an onkyo receiver then into a sony LCD, recently when playing films, at no particular point, the screen goes blank, sound remains, the picture then comes and goes or remains blank, if it does come back it is covered in red sparkles over the image, the image is fully visible but covered in the red sparkles, it might also go snowy screen with colour in it
if I get it back to the PS3 home screen it seems ok and doesnt crash, I have tried routing the PS3 direct to the lcd in case it was the amp, nope, still problem remains, I have not made any changes to the software, I havent done any recent updates, this has started happening unexpectedly
any thoughts please
Luke, you mean it looks like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erzwLlWiz1M ?
From what I could find online, a few folks suggest it is a cable-bandwidth issue… more specifically a “shitty HDMI cable”. When you said the picture cuts out, I immediately thought “CABLE!” but when you said sparkles I had to go digging… it looks like both could be tied to the cable which is actually great news, cause they are cheap to try a new one.
I am not sure what the shopping situation in the UK is, but don’t pay more than $15-25 (which is like 2 pounds right now
for one. Amazon has a great selection or if you have a local electronics place that WON’T rip you off like Best Buy does here, you can try there.
Hi Riyad, thank you for the answer and link, the image on the link isnt like mine, mine plays fine, then it blacks out, then it come back intermitently with a poor quality picture with red snow/speckles randoming flashing in it, I have also noticed now a buzz in the speakers of my hifi receiver, the onkyo unit, I still think your poor quality cable is a good goer though as I am using a QED HDMI from PS3 to receiver then a no name brand from receiver to TV, this could be the weak link, also and a longshot, could local weather and static be an issue here on a poor cable? I know every time I touch my car at the moment (has been hot here in the UK ) I get a massive static shock, the sort that makes you nervous to touch your car again and you have an audible SNAP! anyhow, I will swap out that cable and report back – thank you regards Luke Ryan
Luke, I can’t speak to the weather; I’m sure it could effect things, but I know nothing about how it might do that.
As for the cable, that’ll be the cheapest thing to test first… if that doesn’t fix it, try and go HDMI directly from the PS3 to the TV and see if all the issues go away… if they do, you might need a new receiver or send it in for warranty repair or something.
I have a weird problem with my PS3, I recently updated my firmware from 3.15 to 3.55 and I never noticed any issues until I played a bluray movie. When I play the movies I get no issues for about 5-10 seconds of real play or the menu before selecting to play the movie. But after that small time frame I get wacked out audio with something like ‘echoing’ mixed with static. And When messing with some options over and over sometimes I’d have missing audio channels but I think that’s fixed, its the static I don’t understand.
I never had issues before, but to add to that, I found an odd ‘fix’ where I was so fed up, I turned off the TV for awhile leaving the ps3 on and the movie paused, I turned TV back on after awhile and it played perfectly it would seem. So I tested just changing the input back and worth from something else on the tv and I got the same resulting fix. But I want to know what could be causing this. I’ve looked around the web for awhile and Its hard to find such a mixed problem in results. I’m lucky to find this page alone to ask this.
Suggestions of changing the cable seem reasonable, and so does updating my TV’s firmware if there is any, but I still would suspect it has something to do with the firmware and changing how the hdmi works with the TV. If there’s something more specific someone can tell me that gives me a better idea of where to test next that would be great.
Oh, I think I should add, that I have an hdmi switch box between TV and PS3/xbox360/pc as well. And the audio is from a logitech z-2300 from the tv’s audio out. I’ve never had problems with any other devices, and actually PS3 games have no problems at all, its only with bluray movies… seriously, wtf.
koolaid, that is definitely a weird one… it sounds like a charge building up, but the fact that it ONLY happens with Blu-ray movies… man… I have no idea. Does it happen with any movies? like DVD movies too? Is your audio and video coming via HDMI from the PS3 to the tuner then split out to Z2300s and your TV, or are you doing HDMI video out and optical direct from PS3 over to the Z2300s?
Did you try spraying the whole setup with goat’s blood? I’m running low on ideas
Thanks for the reply Riyad,
I did check with with a DVD, no issues. And like I said, a simple swap of the TV’s input to anything and back to the PS3 will correct it. Exiting the playing of a bluray back to the XMB, and starting it again will re-create the issue, but can be corrected just the same.
The way it goes is:
Audio: PS3 (hdmi) > Hdmi switchbox > TV > TV’s audio out (red/white analog cables) > Z2300s (2.1 system).
video: PS3 (hdmi) > Hdmi switchbox(can switch between 3 cables) > TV
I ended up updating my TV’s firmware since there was an improvement to its 720p/1080i processing or something, but that didn’t effect my odd problem.
You know I once put peanut butter on my ps3 (I’m not kidding) and that was only to remove some sticky glue (it works). But I don’t see how goats blood will help my bluray audio problem
I suspect it just has to do with the ps3 update and something to do with maybe adding 3D bluray playback and other things that created some kinda discovery problem with my TV or something.
It would seem like either its an issue of an ‘outdated’ hdmi cable I’m using because of the extra bull the ps3 wants to talk about with my TV maybe, or its that my TV is older in regards to how it handshakes hdmi or how it handles receiving or requesting the audio.
I feel alittle better knowing that I can work around it at least.
koolaid, your guesses are as good as mine and all sound possible… I would probably change out the cable with something of decent quality but cheap (e.g. amazon, blue jeans cables) and then stop there if that didn’t work.
If you ever find the solution, keep me posted… I’m curious now.
Well after trying a different hdmi cable and alot of reading around I already forgot most of it, because I’ve learned the just of it all is the ps3 does not like Dolby TrueHD 6.1 audio, but switching tv output back and forth after the ‘static echoing audio’ starts it will be fixed for that session of video playback.
I found that the ps3 will do this as well with a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 but on a different twist. The difference though is the static audio gag will happen for about 20 seconds or so and then go away. But I have been able to create the same issue with the 6.1 on 5.1 by I believe hitting playback very quickly from the disc’s menu. It also corrects just the same with the trick I mentioned about flipping tv outputs.
I’ll say that this has only happened with my funimation blu rays, whether its because of them or just the ps3 dislike to Dolby TrueHD that I’m not sure of, and I could care less at this point because its deal-with-able. But I did read somewhere that there is some ‘lies’ from Sony about what the ps3 can output in regards to audio and converting things and that would include Dolby TrueHD. Either by updates or just never supporting things, its pretty lame that I’ve found/have this issue. Thankfully its not as big a deal as I figured, I know it’s the ps3 itself combined with the audio format on the blu ray’s. And since 5.1 is less so a problem maker, I am happy for now.
I just thought I’d come back to let you know. Thanks Riyad
koolaid, I’m glad you got something working. That sounds frustrating… I wonder if you could work around this by using optical out of the PS3 to some small speaker setup (maybe a cheap Logitech PC one?) instead of doing video and audio over HDMI and see if the PS3 stops dying on those more advanced formats?
Riyad, I wanted to come back and say that after I ended up letting go my phat ps3 20gb (launch model) and picking up a slim ps3 2001a. My suspicions about the original hardware not being able to decode 5.1/6.1 Dolby TrueHD seems to be spelled true. I no longer have ANY issue with audio with my same blu rays on the new console. So if anyone ever comes across this problem with their own phat ps3, they should know that its literally a hardware limitation that Sony seemed to leave in or can’t do anything about for the old models unfortunately.
I used to think the phat ps3 was the better deal of having for keeps vs getting a slim but after considering the heat output, the electricity, the threat of YLOD and the audio issues I now feel that a slim is the way to go if you plan on playing your ps3 for years to come, the backwards compatibility isn’t worth it imo. Keep your ps2 for that!
Thanks
Hi Riyad, sorted, wife now watching flashdance on the PS3!!! as we we speak and three discs later no black screens or break down, so how did I fix it, well as you said cable! firstly I connected the PS3 direct to the TV using the regular cable therefore bypassing the receiver, problem still there, took our regular cable and put in pukka QED screened hi quality cable, sorted it straight away, so back down the shop for a better cable to replace the regular one, strange how the regular cable seemed to work for a long time then bunked, if you try and shove too much bandwith/data down a rubbish cable can it bunk after a while I wonder, anyway, thank you for your support and thankfully seems to be a £25 fix for a new pukka cable, so to all those out there that doubt that decent cables make a difference to your picture and sound and are not worth the expense, bunkam, I did also note on the pukka cables box in the shop they all boasted 1080p transfer etc, etc so perhaps the cheaper cables cannot handle the large load, thanks Luke Ryan
Luke, I’m really glad to hear that did the trick. I’m with you on the strangeness of a cable working fine for years then suddenly not being good enough… I have no idea why that would be the case. Either way, happy 1080p!

I’ve had my PS3 20 GB original consul for a long time now and as of janurary this year have been playing it with a HDMI cable after I got my HDTV for Christmas last year. It is a Phillips HDTV that I just updated the firmware in. I just got a black screen with the HDMI cable this week and went searching for answers. I did manage to get the video back to composite cables and works but when i try to go back to HDMI nothing black screen. When I did the hold power button beep then two beeps menu i tryed number 4 and number 3. when i did number 3 – restore file system it comes up hard disk’s file system is corrupted. I pretty sure thats not right. Is that telling me that I need a new hard drive or do i have to reinstall the ps3 operating system files. any help is appreciated.
Charles,
If the PS3′s file system is corrupt that usually indicates a hardware failure (hard drive). I’ve not had to replace a hard drive in the PS3 so I don’t know the process or how to get the OS onto a new drive. Not sure if you can order blu-ray disks with the source OS on them or if you have to send it back to Sony for repair. Sorry.
another thing that I forgot to mention is that when I have both cables plugged into the playstation composite and HDMI it recognizes that an available HDMI device is detected and ask me to switch audio and video the HDMI. but when i do the manual switch in the playstation and change the channel no picture.
Charles,
This sounds somewhat like the problem I’m having minus the corrupted files error (I was too afraid of losing my game data so I’ve tried a number of things but that so far). When did your console start with the black screen because I first noticed my error a couple days ago and used the system just fine last week, and have you tried the console on another tv with the same hdmi cable (of course if you do, just make sure to hold the power button until it defaults back to factory or just plug it up like you did with the component cable and hdmi, it should boot with the component to begin with as you described before and you can select hdmi)? Since you have an older PS3 I’m wondering if the firmware update is affecting them syncing up with certain hd Tv’s. I just heard today that the older Xbox 360′s are having a similar problem and microsft is replacing those consoles with the newer versions for free even if they’re not under warranty. Sony was stumped with my problem so it may be a brand new problem.
Oh, BTW if it is indeed a hard drive problem you can Google “replace 20Gb Ps3 and it will give you the specs and directions on how to do it. Apparently you can buy a hard drive from best buy and format prior to installation to get it to work on your system. If I run across the specific website I’ll post it for you.
Ed
Hey ed,
yea this problem just started on wed for me my wife tryed to watch a movie and woke me up to tell me about the problem. i was playing the playstation fine on sunday before. and the firmware update on the tv was after the problem started so it wasnt the tv. I dont have another HDTV to try it on so thats out of it. i also did the update on the PS3 as well on tuesday so maybe sony’s update is make the problem?
Charles,
It’s just a theory, so we will have to wait and see if more people with older PS3′s are having the same problem. I haven’t finished canceling out all possibilities with mine yet but just keep checking back and l’ll keep everyone updated. It’s just peculiar that yours started the problem the same time frame mine did. Can you play games, access save files, and watch movies through the component cable in hd? If so it seems to me that your files may not be corrupted. I suggest for you though, call the Sony help line and describe to them your specific problem so they have it on file along with your information. If it is the same problem I’m having, the only way for Sony to know there is a problem is to inform them directly. Good luck buddy and keep us notified as well.
im not sure how to get hd threw the composite. it says 480i when i check it. I can play games save and copy files to a USB drive and the hard drive. it is alittle suspicious that we r having the same problem at the same time. even 360′s r having that problem surprises me for Microsoft.
Component cables are different than composite, component cables are the ones with the red and white for sound; blue, green and red for video. You should be able to get 1080p HD through this cable with a game and blu ray but unfortunately no upscale for copyrighted standard def. movies.
I figured I would share my problem in the chance you might have come across my specific problem. I have an older 40gb PS3 which was connected to my 55″ LED tv for two years and has worked perfectly without a hitch until just a couple of days ago. When powering up the unit, nothing appears on the screen except a black screen which fluctuates at varying frequencies and aspect ratios and gives only intermittent visual cues in the form of red jumbled snow and a spectrum resembling that of old public television stations (all through the hdmi). The unit works through the component cables at 1080p, the PS3 and television has been reset to factory settings, PS3 has been put into safe mode, I have tried multiple hdmi cables, checked for firmware updates via the TV manufacturer and Sony, I have called Sony (who’s technicians were very knowledgeable and helpful…but were just as stumped as I was after going through the troubleshooting), and I also called the television manufacturer who was also equally confused. Now for the intriguing parts of my problem, my Xbox 360 works through all hdmi cables in all 5 hdmi ports on my 55″ LED in 1080p (making it seem the tv is ok)…the best part, my PS3 works on my 32″ LCD with the same hdmi cables flawlessly (making it seem like the PS3 is fine). The only troubleshooting I can think of now is trying another PS3 on the tv, trying the switch as described in your article, Sony didn’t think it would help but I will try anything at this point.
Hi, although I am sorted on mine I cannot help but feel the problem I can see ed lloyd is having sounds very very similar to what I had, I appreciate he said he had tried different Hdmi cables but of what grade would be my question, in the end what worked for me was a decent QED hdmi cable, thick cable with silver braiding on the outside, proper shielding, if you can beg or borrow one then try this first, it made my black screen, intermittment screen and red snow go away and I have had faultless blu ray 1080p since, this is off the back of using a regular/standard quality cable for quite a while and it seemed to fall over! Thanks Luke Ryan
Luke, I agree with you… Ed I don’t know the types of cables you are using, but you sound like you know what you are doing so I imagine they are of decent quality. Still, it might be the fastest/cheapest thing to troubleshoot… some really nice/thick HDMI cable from Blue Jeans Cable or MonoPrice or Amazon. I use 3 of the 24AWG cables from MonoPrice (no affiliation). Or if you have a local place you like going better that isn’t going to totally rob you on decent HDMI cables, try them I suppose.
Thanks Luke, sounds like a very probable cause for the problem seeing as you had a similar problem. Had you tried your console on another TV to see if it continued with that same cable? That’s really the only place I’m at a loss in regard to the cable, more so seeing as the suspected cable along with another brand/shorter style of cable works with my Xbox 360. Regarding the version of hdmi, I couldn’t tell you off hand until going home and looking but I can tell you one is two years old and the other is a little younger. There have been updated hdmi cable versions so it’s still a possibility. I just shiver at the thought of running another 30-50 ft of industrial grade hdmi through my wall, attic, and down through the fireplace to my wall mounted TV. Lol…I would almost rather it be the PS3, cheaper and less work for myself
Nonetheless, thanks for your suggestion.
Ed
Ed, ok that is officially the weirdest one I’ve seen reported on this thread. You’ve done your due-diligence though with the testing, you obviously know what you are doing. I agree about testing a PS3 on the same TV with the same cables as the best next-step.
I don’t have that much confidence in the switch helping if you tried ALL THAT and none of it helped… the Xbox working fine over the *same* cables in the *same* ports immediately made me think it was the PS3, but then you said in the next sentence it works fine on your 32″… damn strange.
All I can think about at this point is the HDCP negotiation between the PS3 and that particular TV being flaky. There have been *a lot* of folks that come in here after years of play without issue and suddenly report they can’t see anything; swapping out the cables usually fixes it and I typically chalk that up to something stupid Sony changed with regard to HDCP negotiation or something.
In this case… man, just keep me updated. I want to know what it ends up being.
Lol…yeah, the guys at Sony were intrigued as well and put me on their special list to get back with to see if I had found a solution. I work in the electronics field dealing with the calibration of electronics on a daily basis, so the troubleshooting comes naturally now. I along with my coworkers are stumped in coming to a concise, or relevant for that matter, list of suspected faults. Contacting Sony, Vizio, and yourself were my last ditch efforts before continuing on with my shot in the dark style troubleshooting.
So yeah, it may be the updated firmware that has caused the miscommunication with the HDCP, so maybe buying the newest version hdmi cable will solve the problem. I’m just not sure seeing as I did the last firmware update after the problem started…unless Sony remotely installed something via wireless without me knowing (but Sony or any other manufacturer for that matter would never do anything without your permission (; ). Essentially this was my worst fear, but unfortunately electronics drift in regard to their outputting frequencies or as you said, firmware updates causing problems with the interface between certain models of electronics. Luckily I’m “that guy” who gets to deal with this issue. But before purchasing any more equipment, I’m going to try to get my hands on another console to ensure it isn’t a hardware problem with my specific unit. If it is my unit, Sony said they could repair it for a mere $99 with shipping included.
It would be nice if Sony would provide me with a set of schematics or specifications so I could ensure the correct frequencies are present at output and/or know what frequency is used to establish the “handshake” between the console and television…but opening up the console to take such measurements would void my non-existent warranty and we as the consumer shouldn’t be opening such an intricate piece of equipment.
Well, just finished my troubleshooting and the outcome is not pleasing. I borrowed a newer PS3 slim from a friend as well as a new version HDMI cable and low and behold the slim works with my television with my older HDMI cable. However, my PS3 still does not work after utilizing the newer HDMI cable. I also noticed that Sony released another firmware update (3.65 if I’m not mistaken) and I updated both mine and the slim. The slim continued to work and mine still doesn’t.
I called Sony and waited on hold for 45 min and was told that I could send it back for $99 but they would not guarantee it would work with my TV. They tried to tell me that it may be that the PS3 is not compatible with my TV even though it worked with it for two years prior to my problem and could not explain how the PS3 slim just happens to work and my older model will not. They aren’t even looking into the firmware possibly causing the miscommunication to the TV and I cannot prove it either since you can’t down grade your firmware version once the system is updated…unless I can find the old firmware somewhere online and install it myself.
Sony does have a trade up program for those of you that have older fat PS3 systems. Call them to see if you qualify to upgrade to the slim for $150. Unfortunately, mine is an “A” model and does not qualify for the slim upgrade.
I am now on to GameStop or Craigslist so I might be able to purchase a PS3 slim. Good luck to you all.
Ed, I’m really sorry to hear things didn’t end up working out.
What does having an “A” model mean? I have the 60GB original launch model, I wonder if that fits the bill for “A” as well?
I am not sure how to distinguish between one model or the other, but Sony can apparently tell by your systems serial number.
A friend of mine was having problems with the yellow light error code and Sony gave him the slim trade up option. My educated guess would be that Sony offers the trade up program to those system models prone to the yellow light errors but I’m not certain.
BTW, I tried an older 80 gb console today and didn’t have a problem either. I’m still not sold that it’s a problem with the system that could be fixed if sent back for repairs since it works on other televisions. I’ll keep you posted if I come up with something else or rule anything else out.
My ps3 hdmi cable was always working but last week there was no video or audio so i decided to buy a new hdmi cable from amazon but it still doesnt work i have tried to reset the ps3 by holding the power button down but it didnt work and i also put in my av cable (one you get in the box) and went into the display settings and changed it from av to hdmi but the screen went black for 30 seconds i dont know what to do
Also i realised that on my tv that it tells me if something is connected into that source and it doesnt say anything is connected into the hdmi source
HELP
Jordan,
When did your problem start, what type of PS3, do you have, and have you tried your console on another HD tv with your hdmi cable? Read my post and some of the others above and you’ll see that we are having intriguingly similar faults around the same timeframe. If you’ve exhausted your resources troubleshooting, I suggest you calling the customer service number which you can find on the Playstation website (very knowledgeable guys and if anything, they can log your problem and get back sib you if they find a fault).
Ed
I have the same problem and nobody commented on my post
the problem started 2 weeks ago i have a 80g ps3 and i have tried to connect it to another hd tv
I’m having a similar problem. My PS3 has been hooked up to the same tv with the same HDMI cables since I’ve bought it. In the last week however the PS3 won’t start up normally. If I try to power on with the controller, the controller will flash red and the screen in my TV will remain black. If I shut off the PS3 and then restart it while holding the power button until the 2nd beep it will reset the video settings and everything will work fine during that session. When I turn it off however I have to go through the exact same process again. Any ideas?
hi i was wondering if anyone could help me i used to run my ps3 on a hdmi lead.i went to change my settings to component isit with the three differante coloured toggles. to play it on my old tv and clicked the wrong one now i cant get it to work on my new telly with either lead or both(plugged into hdmi 2)
I just had this problem today. How did I fix mine? Well, it seems that after doing what you suggested, connecting it to an old-school cable then the HDMI cable then change to HDMI display. For me, I had to switch off my LCD TV (by remote) and switch it back on… and everything’s working again
Vesperia, glad it is working again. After running this thread for however many years it has been, I’m always amazed at how different each solution for each person ends up being. I have no idea what Sony is doing with the PS3, but it seems to be quite the persnikity HDMI device
It was really helpful. I was seeing the black screen issue when i connect HDMi cable with my PS3. I am using Sony Bravia 46 inch. And the problem was with the tv. Updating the firmware of the tv worked for me. Thanks all.
okay, my problem seems to be similar to some others above, but I still can’t find a solution. my PS3 was working fine on HDMI just a few days ago. I later moved my TV to the living room to watch a soccer game in HD with the same HDMI cable on a cable box, and it worked. when I brought the TV back and hooked it up to the PS3, I got no signal. the composite cables work and I went to the display settings and selected HDMI and went to the HDMI setting on my TV but still, no signal. the TV even once said Not Supported rather than No Signal, but I don’t know if that’s important. my PS3 has never had any problems with visuals or sound ever since I bought it and I’ve been using the same cable the whole time. it was only a few days ago that it was working with the PS3 perfectly, and yesterday it was working with the cable box, so I’m really stumped.
hi ! i bought a ps3 in japan now im in the phillipines i buy a hdmi cable and i try to put in on my monitor (pc) LCD hanns-g HW173D maybe 17 inch when i try it it my monitor goes blank or black . im using my hdmi to dvi cable can someone help me ? i can use my ps3 in a normal tv (not hd) when i restore default it asked if i want to connect hdmi cable but it goes black help me please sorry for my bad english hehe
Hey people,
I have found a solution to a rather distinctive PS3 Display issue and I posted about it on my blog. I linked back to this post as well because it’s very useful for other sorts of issues. And I am not spamming, just trying to help.
http://blog.tabinda.net/misc/ps3playstation-3-no-video-but-audio-issue-solution/
During a recent thunderstorm, I was being an idiot and was playing my old-school PS3 80gb. It and the TV was surge protected. After a couple of lightning strikes nearby, my TV flickered and the image turned black. No sound, no video from my HDMI. I have tested my TV and the HDMI cable on other devices around the house, and they both worked fine. But the images or sound from the PS3 still haven’t shown up. I even waited 24 hours with it unplugged, but it still didn’t work. I can’t find my Composite cable to test if the video card is fried. I’m going to a local gamestop today to see if I can buy another cable. Can you help me? I have corrupted my PS3 about a year back and I don’t want to lose my saves again.
First of all, thanks for being so helpful with all of us – users.
I tried all the tricks (except the HDMI switch) and I still have no HDMI signal on TV. Tried on other TV, the same…
The better I can get is with an HDMI-DVI cable on monitor. works perfectly, however I would be very pleased to have the PS3 working again as it worked before on my TV.
Before go for the hdmi port resoldering, has anyone fixed this?
Thanks
Paul — if you can’t get an image using HDMI from the PS3 on your TV or any other TV you tried (I’m assuming different models?) but you CAN get it when you swap the cable for a different one, the first thing that popped in my head was “Have you picked up another HDMI cable to try with?”. I know you said you tried everything on the list (which includes a different cable), it is just really sounds like a cable issue when HDMI-HDMI won’t work but HDMI-DVI using another cable will and likely just a quality/HDCP issue with the first cable.
The Amazon basics ones linked above are cheap or if you want to run down to the local Best Buy and grab a test cable or something that works too.
The good news is that at least your HDMI port is outputting video, so it’s not a PS3 hardware issue it doesn’t sound like. The only other issue (if a cable doesn’t fix it) that comes to mind is an HDCP negotiation issue, in which case the only fix there is a decent quality cable and upgrading the firmware on the PS3 and your TV to help ensure compatibility.
UPDATE: One more silly idea… unplug your PS3 from your TV, hard-power-off the PS3 and the TV (unplug them from the wall), then plug the HDMI-HDMI cable into the PS3 and TV and turn everything back on… did that work?
If you read through this thread, that really stupid sequence of events can sometimes fix the “no video” issue a surprising amount of times… I have no idea why (sounds like the PS3 is caching some invalid HDCP value or something is my guess).
Sorry for misunderstood.
Yes, I tried different TV models and found the very same problem. Then tried 4 different HDMI-HDMI cables, which are working with other equipments in the same port / TV and no signal again. I have already updated the TV SW and formatted the console.
It only worked in my PC monitor through the HDMI – DVI cable.
I’m going to try the unplug both equipments, however I have no expectations as I believe I have already done it…
As you said, this should be an invalid HDCP value… Although, I have no idea how to solve it… Maybe to buy a new PS3…
Thanks once more
Paul that is a real bummer, I’m not sure what to suggest (you upgraded the firmware on the PS3 to the latest right?). It sounds like the PS3 is fine, but for whatever reason just won’t negotiate a HDCP secure connection with *any* device.
You could send it back to sony, that would be $99 roughly and S/H… that seems like a lot for a repair they might not get exactly right. If it’s not a big deal, then yes I suppose buying another one would be the way to go.
That really sucks, I thought we could get it to behave right
Thanks mate, it works!
I got a ps3 slim not quite a year ago and been playing it on a hdmi cable. Worked just fine last night. Went to play it tonight and I get nothing but a blue screen on my sony bravia tv. What is the problem? I never switched anything. Please help me.
What happened when you tried all the tips outlined in the post?
Hi,
I have a HDTV and a HDMI cable that’s roughly 3- 4 mo.s old and a 160gb slim PS3 that’s almost 6/7 mos old. Gaming has been fine however, just recently, in the middle of online ps3 play, I lose my HDMI signal; cost me a few matches in MK9…but w/e, coz i’m more worried about the hardware.
Now, the weird thing is that these all started when in one of my online MK games, my PS3 froze and I ‘resetted” the system to reboot/restart (hold power button till it’s “off” then turn it back on).
Now when I play MK9, there will be occasions (inconsistent conditions) where I’d lose my HD signal. The game is still on going (when I get “hit”, the controller vibrates) but nothing’s on the screen.
I tried playing Dragon age 2 but the “hdmi resolution switcthing” only occured at the start; after 4 – 5 hours of straight gameplay, the HD signal loss never occured.
Seems to me that it’s only with MK9 that I get this but I never experienced this before.
Do you recommend that I “reset” the video settings? (aka, put ps3 slim on standby, hold power button, etc.)?
thanks
Raul, try playing another graphically intense game like Killzone 2/3, God of War 3, Uncharted, etc… I’m wondering if this is a heat issue.
Is the PS3 in a cabinet? You could try taking it out and setting it up by the TV and playing MK9 for a few hours and see if that helps. If that doesn’t help, I’d suggest making sure your slim has the latest firmware, but you are already playing online so I assume it does. The only other thing I can think is to see if your *TV* has an updated firmware available on it’s website. Some vendors are better about this than others, but most now-adays release updates that can be installed via USB drive into the side of the TV.
If NONE of that worked, I’ll recommend is grabbing a new cable and trying it out. You can grab a really nice one from Amazon for $10.
I know you said your cable is brand new already, it’s just whenever someone reports the “losing sync” problem, something like 7 out of 10 times a high quality cable fixes the issue… I have no idea why the PS3 is so finicky with it’s cables, but it just seems to be =/
For some reason….it (almost) disappeared when I got another cable 2 days ago. I did get the issue just ONCE yesterday….then gameplay was smooth. Earlier, I played MK online for like….3 hours and no signal loss occurred.
What i find odd is that the ps3 is in a well ventilated area and I had no issues with the display until like last week.
I just find it mind boggling (and maybe thankful?) that what i’m experiencing isn’t as bad as what i’d see in YouTube; I could still play games “normally”, but it’s as if my ps3/hdtv would have hiccups; it jsut doesn’t help that I can’t pinpoint what exactly causes it and when it would happen.
the only games i have are DA2, DA: Origins, MK9, SUper SF 4, AvP and Resident Evil 5.
THe “signal drop” would seem more frequent with MK though; i’ll find it hard to believe if it is the game that’s causing my problems.
Oh well…..at least I know my ps3 should still be fine.
Raul, no doubt it is really strange that it doesn’t just drop signal either right away or stay black all together… but to work for HOURS and in a well-ventilated area, that is one of those really sneaky kind of problems that will be a PIA to track down.
Hopefully the signal drop stays at a minimum and you can get a lot more time out of it without incident. If not, I’d wait for it to get a lot worse the come back and we’ll try any other ideas we can think of =(
Having HDMI issues for the second time on a new tv. Quite surprised for it to happen again on my new one. Worked for a while, then just stopped. Can get AV (like before), but thats it. With the old tv it would not change resolution and in the end had software issues, but this time the HDMI option is just black, no ‘want to switch’ message comes up at all. Tried many things, reset the Playstation, firmware completely up to date, tried different tv’s and cables. Any help would be appreciated!!
Steven, can you describe in more detail how you have things connected? AV cables from PS3 to TV *and* the HDMI cable from the PS3 to the TV?
If the TV is not picking up any signal on the HDMI port, I wonder if the TV’s port or the PS3′s port is bad… does your TV have another HDMI in port to try or do you have another PS3 to plug in and try (like a friends?) — I know that is a bit of a long shot, just trying to narrow down variables.
I had recently gone on vacation and took my xbox 360 and PS3 with. I used the systems on my sisters tv and all worked great. I got back and plugged them back into my panasonic 50 3d plasma through HDMI as they always worked and all I have been getting on both systems are a black screen. I have tried everything from resetting the ps3 to using stock cables and both systems work in SD mode, but as soon as I switch over to HD signal 720 or 1080 I get just black screen. My bluray player and pc hooked up through HDMI work great but my game systems do not. I hooked them up to the tv in my living room and both systems work fine even with the same HDMI cords I use on my tv. So im at a loss and think it could be the tv maybe? I also unplugged the tv and all all night but nothing. any help would be great. I do have 5 different HDMI cords I have tried also and none work on my panny but they all work with the systems on my other tv’s. sorry to ramble on but I just been going crazy over this lol.
Steve, I appreciate you taking the time to spell out every step you took… I was really hoping you hadn’t tried the “unplugged the TV and reset it” trick yet because that was my first thought =(
The only thing that comes to mind *is* the Panny itself, if both your PS3 and Xbox are giving you black screen with different HDMI cables AND the consoles work in the living room, you have basically ruled out every single variable in the equation and narrowed it down to the Panny.
You mentioned it’s a 3D TV, so I assume it’s fairly new (Maybe the VIERA TC-P50 series?) and that it has a few different HDMI connections on the back… did you try the consoles in all of the HDMI ports by chance?
Last thing I can think of, did you try upgrading the firmware on the TV? If not, you can go here on Panny’s site, type in your model number, then click “Drivers and Downloads” tab when your TV’s support page comes up.
If *that* doesn’t work, maybe this is the right time to finally get that 130″ plasma you were thinking about?
… or call Panasonic… yea probably do that first
Thanks for tyhe fast reply and I tried all that also, I just bought this bloddy tv in february lol so I have to stick with this for a while still lol its a shame also that panny wont stick by there warranty and send someone to look at it, they keep telling me its not the tv so I got me a lemon tv for games lol but thnx for your help I really appreciate it!
ive used the same hdmi for months now and it works for other things just not my ps3 i get regular video but it looks like shit n im not sending my ps3 in to sony none of ur suggestions yet worked for me what to i do
Im thinking it has something to do with HDCP from tv to the game system not connecting right or something? could I be right on this and than it is prolly the tv set that may need a new HDMI board or something?
Yesterday I set up my new TV, a Senzu 24” LCD iDTV. I set my PS3 up using a Blutek 3.6m HDMI cable. From what I can tell the connection between the TV and the PS3 is fine, because I can use the XMB menu on my PS3. However, majority of the time when I load games the screen stays black, and I can only hear sound. Sometimes when I load games it will work, maybe 5-10% of the time. Once the screen goes black I have to turn the PS3 off.
When I access the Display Settings>Video Output Settings>HDMI> ‘ When I press Automatic settings, the screen goes black and I have to restart my PS3.’ However when I press custom I can access all the resolutions which I can test individually.’
Any help is much appreciated!
PS: I have tested playing games using Standard Definition using the Component cables, and I am able to load and play games fine.
Michael, that sounds exactly like an HDCP issue (the secure connection that HDMI devices negotiate with each other when they are connected)
The first thing I would try is a high quality HDMI cable (that has been working for folks). That’s the cheapest “next step” to try and given the behavior you describe, sounds like a good place to start.
If the issue continues you can always return the cable and then look for a firmware update for your TV and make sure the PS3 is fully updated.
I had a cheap HDMI cord from Amazon.com and it worked perfectly. There was a thunderstorm a few weeks ago, and the cord stopped working. I plugged in the original AV cords that came with the system. I’ve finally gotten around to getting a new cord, because I figured the cord was fried.
I cannot get it to work.
I plug in the AV cord and HDMI cord. Go to System > Display > HDMI.
It goes blank for 30 seconds and reverts to the previous screen.
I turn the system off and hold the power button until it beeps twice.
Sometimes, it shows that the HDMI device was detected. Sometimes, it doesnt.
- When it IS detected, I say that I want to use the HDMI cord for audio and visual. The Video1 input channel (the channel I use for the AV cord) goes black. I then switch it to the HDMI1 channel (where the HDMI cord is plugged in). It too is black. I change it to HDMI2 (incase I had it in the wrong jack). Again, still black. I get frustrated and try to reset it again.
- When it does NOT detect the HDMI cord, it starts up like normal with the AV cord. I then go through the same process over and over, wondering what I’m doing wrong.
My system is up to date with the system updates, and I’m pretty sure I’ve got the original 80g PS3. My TV is a Broksonic LCD HDTV.
Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Have you been able to resolve this? I have the exact problem. Had Amazon hdmi that was workinbg fine then black screen. I wasn’t sure if it was the storm or the PS3 updates. Mine stopped working on the same date as yours. I’ve tried new hdmi cables and nothing seems to work.
Im having a very unique issue with my PS3. I have read through many of the comments and replys on this thread and nothig sounds quite like what I am seeing. The comment about turnig the system off and when restarting, holding the power button till a second beep occurs to get back to the factory settings is what I tried and when i Did so, my PS3 finally detected my HMDI cord and asked me if i wanted to change my output settings to HDmi. I agreed but the very next screen showed me nothing but PS3 sprinkles floating around and an X symbol with enter next to it. When I hit X nothing happens and all I can do is get to the PS button screen to turn off my system or controller. there seems to B no XMB present. After hours of fiddling i gave up and need sum help. All i wanna do is see my Beautiful GT5 in the amazing 3D sony promised me. and so far i feel i wasted the xtra cash i blew on my TV.
Hi,
I have bought a ps3 slim. it works fine when I connect it with the stock RCA cable but shows a black screen when I connect it using the HDMI cable. but I can hear the sounds made by swinging of the menu. I tried every single steps you said in this post except for buying the ps3 component AV cable.
Update:
now the HDTV gets no signal whatsoever from the PS3. I tried plugging the HDMI cable to the HDMI 2 slot of the HDTV and voila; it’s as if nothing happened.
Now, I can game with no problems with the HDMI 2 slot; but here’s a funny thing with the original HDMI 1 slot of the TV.
If I turn on the TV first, then the PS3, it stays blue. Now, if I unplug the HDMI cable (from either the PS3 or the tv) and then plug it back in after 10 seconds, the screen goes black a bit, and then reverts to the blue “no signal”.
I take it that my HDMI 1 slot is toast; are repairs for this cheap? or am I better off saving up for those PS3 component AV cables? (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MIXFWA/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=thbume-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000MIXFWA)
thanks
When I play games or watch movies on my ps3,which is connected by HDM, there is a glare in the center of the screen. Only when HMDI does this happen. Someone told me it was the cord, so I went out and bought a more expensive one and same thing
Anyone know what is the problem??
after accepting the hdmi settings, turn you tv on and off again. some of them need to refresh.
My PS3 is experiencing similar problems. I will get it to work fine at first then I go to play the game its fine. Next thing I know the screen goes black for a few seconds and eventually it will come back. This will happen several times throughout my playing time and I will sometimes have to wiggle the cord to get it to stay on the screen. I have had this problem for the last couple of months and I’m not sure what to do. It’s not the cord because I have used another that was hooked up to my comcast and i plugged it into my ps3 and I still had the same problem. I know its not the TV either because I tried to get it to work on several TV’s and I am experiencing the same problems. Also, when I play music on my ps3 the music fades in and out whenever the bass line kicks in. I believe something is wrong with the port itself and I may have to send it back to Sony.
Thank you for some other magnificent article. Where else could anybody get that kind of information in such a perfect manner of writing? I have a presentation subsequent week, and I’m on the look for such info.
I tried and it still doesn’t work. D:
Oh my god. Thank you for this. I was having the problem with the AV & HDMI cables. I tried the power button(6-10 seconds) and it worked. Thank you. Thank you!
Oookay. Been a while since I last posted (http://www.thebuzzmedia.com/ps3-hdmi-black-screen/comment-page-2/#comment-388128)
Anyhows, here’s the update:
There was a time where the HDMI 1 slot of the HD TV will NOT pick up a signal, so I resorted to gaming in the 2nd slot. Then the day after, I unplugged the cables before heading to work. Upon my return, I plugged them back in and HDMI 1 slot worked just as fine.
Just yesterday, HDMI 1 slot will not display a picture; if I restart teh PS3 while the TV is on, it will act as if it will attempt to get signal (screen goes black) and then I get the dreaded blue screen of “no signal” after a while.
Help needed:
1) I mostly play at 720P OR 1080i; will there be a BIG discrepancy if I play with component cables (NOT composite…)? Games I frequently play are MK9, RE5 and Dragon Age: Origins
2) I have yet to get home and plug the cables back in; hopefully, the “hold power button for 6-10 seconds” would work for me.
(I’ll update in a bit).
Thanks,
Update:
Yep. The “unplug everything” works for me. What I did is that I unplugged the cables before heading to work. Upon getting back home, presto….everything works.
