I think Jimmy Carter may be feeling that way, too. If you didn’t see the news story, Jimmy Carter has decided – after 60 years – to leave the Southern Baptist cult because of their continued indifference towards women. Here is what Mr. Carter had to say:
“At its most repugnant, the belief that women must be subjugated to the wishes of men excuses slavery, violence, forced prostitution, genital mutilation and national laws that omit rape as a crime. But it also costs many millions of girls and women control over their own bodies and lives, and continues to deny them fair access to education, health, employment and influence within their own communities.”

The truth is that male religious leaders have had — and still have — an option to interpret holy teachings either to exalt or subjugate women. So, the teaching is to “remember Lot’s wife” because she had the unmitigated gaul to turn her head in the wrong direction, but it was totally okay for Lot to move his family to Penetrationville and say “come fuck my daughters.” What an asshole. This is a perfect example of why religion sucks. Nobody ever points this shit out.
It is very refreshing to see someone – a former president – stand up and say, “You know what? This is bullshit.” Historically, nobody has ever wanted to cross the Jesus Mafia for fear of religious and social persecution, even when they appear to be the biggest offenders of God’s law.

Take Jim Bakker, for instance…spent his career praising Jesus while simultaneously embezzling funds and paying off Jessica Hahn to stop telling people that he raped her. Or Jimmy Swaggart who had quite a fondness for prostitutes, even after making his teary-eyed televised plea for God to wash him clean of his sins.
Is that how a good Christian man loves and honors his wife?
