iPhone 3G iOS 4 Jailbreak and Carrier Unlock Guide

IMPORTANT: Due to changes in iTunes 9.2+ iOS verification model, you have to backup your “SHSH blob” first before continuing. Fortunately we have a dead-easy step-by-step guide for you guys. Once you are done, come back and continue.

Welcome to the world’s first iPhone iOS 4 Jailbreak and Carrier unlock guide. Let’s just dig right in!

NOTE: This guide is continually updated based on conversations in the comments section as well as updated software like redsn0w coming out and fixing problems for people. Please let us know in the comments if there is something else we need to update/add/clarify to make this guide easier.

This guide is ONLY for the people who meet the following criteria:

  • You have an iPhone 3G (NOT 3gS)
    • 3GS doesn’t work because you cannot jailbreak it as of yet.
      • Update #1: PwnageTool 4.01 (Mac OS X only) was released and supports jailbreaking the iPhone 3GS. For Windows users, we need to wait a bit longer. This is not a guide will not work for PwnageTool or for 3GS’s!!
    • If you have an original “2G”/EDGE-only iPhone, we have a new 3.1.2 guide for you! You can’t get iOS 4 unfortunately.
  • You are currently on OS < 4
  • You are currently on baseband 05.13.04 or less
    • Check your version by going to Settings > General > About > Modem Firmware
  • You did not use the spirit jailbreak

We will continue updating this guide as known good pwnage is released.

This how to guide is in two sections, jailbreaking and carrier unlocking. If you are an AT&T user, please stop after completing the first section – there is no “carrier unlock” for you because AT&T is the official carrier in the US. If you are a T-Mobile user please continue all the way through as you will need to “carrier unlock” your device to have it work on T-Mobile’s US network.

If you are not in the US you can replace the instructions above where “AT&T” represents the official iPhone-compatible network in your region and “T-Mobile” represents the unofficial-but-technically-compatible network in your region.

Required Items

First Download iTunes 9.2

Then download redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5

Download the iPhone IPSW (iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293m_Restore.ipsw)

Step 1: Jailbreaking

Update your iPhone to iOS4 via iTunes 9.2.

NOTE: If, by the time you are working through this guide, there are newer versions of iOS 4 available via iTunes (like 4.0.1, 4.1.0, etc.) and you are unsure if the guide will work on those newer versions (and we haven’t posted an updated guide yet), you can use this iPhone OS download utility to download the exact firmware version you want.

iOS 4.0.1 NOTE: A few readers have pointed out that you can successfully install 4.0.1 by applying the update through iTunes, but using redsn0w to jailbreak an iOS 4.0 IPSW file and flash that to your device instead during the Jailbreak step. You will still have iOS 4.0.1 on your phone, but the core jailbroken parts will be from the 4.0 IPSW file.

REMINDER: You need to have backed up your “SHSH blob” before doing this next step. We have a guide for that here (it’s a new thing with iTunes 9.2+). When done, just come back and continue.

Plug in your iPhone

Go to the iPhone within iTunes SHIFT+Click the Restore button

  • This allows you to manually select the .ipsw file you previously downloaded
  • Update the iPhone

NOTE: If you are reading this tutorial long after iOS 4 has been out and there are newer versions like iOS 4.1, please check the site for an updated guide as Apple has a habit of re-locking-down future releases of OS’s that lock basebands. So you just want to be aware of the challenges before doing it.

Open and run redsn0w.

NOTE: Make sure iTunes is no longer running at this point.

Windows Tip: Do not run redsn0w from your desktop. If you are using Windows 7, right-click on redsn0w.exe, go to Properties and set it to run in XP Compatibility Mode, and then right-click on the executable and “Run as Administrator” when launching.

  • Select the .ipsw file you previously downloaded
  • Select the desired options

Then hit Next, and following the prompts on the redsn0w screen, turn OFF your phone but leave plugged in:

Follow onscreen directions to set your phone into DFU mode:

Click “finish” and let the jailbreak complete:

That’s it! your done!

At this point if you are on AT&T (or whatever official carrier is in your area) you are all done. Your iPhone has iOS 4 on it and you are ready to get started with the new iPhone features!

If you still need to “carrier unlock” your iPhone to get it working on an alternative network, keep reading!

Step 2: Carrier Unlocking (e.g. T-Mobile)

Alright, you have your phone updated to iOS 4 and now it’s time to carrier unlock it so it works on other GSM networks, so let’s get going!

Go into Settings > General > Network and Turn off 3g:

Run Cydia (it may need to update and restart itself a couple of times, don’t rush it)

Search for the “ultrasn0w” application  <– the “0″ is a zero

NOTE: If you do not see ultrasn0w listed in Cydia directly, you may need to register the default ultrasn0w repository (http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com/). Reader ‘Gaf’ has provided instructions on how to do that down below.

Install ultrasn0w:

Now reboot the device. Insert the unsupported SIM (e.g. T-Mobile in the USA is a common one) and… Wait for it…..waaaaaiiittt for it……

There!… your good to go.

That is it, can you believe how easy that was? We just ran the ultrasn0w app and it cracked our baseband for us wide open so our iPhone can be a good citizen of other GSM networks!

Hope you enjoyed this guide! If you run into problems, please post the issue in the comments and we’ll see if we can help.

Saving SHSH Blob

Reader BANK below points out that the iphone-dev team (the guys behind all the cracks we use for these guides; they know what they are doing) has recommended that users start saving their “SHSH blobs” for future Jailbreaks and Unlocks:

Cydia starting to save your SHSH blobs too, just like it does for iPhone3GS, ipt3G and later devices. That’s because starting with 4.0, Apple started putting a “soft” SHSH blob check in the firmware. The SHSH blob check is very real in the sense that if iTunes can’t get your blobs (because the Apple signing window has closed), the iTunes restore will error out. But it’s “soft” in the sense that those devices can always use redsn0w or PwnageTool to get past the error (the bootroms themselves for those devices don’t require blobs to be in the firmware files, unlike the newer bootroms).

Fortunately Cydia has built-in functionality to do this for you by saving out your phones SHSH blob to the Cydia’s server.

NOTE: This will cause device-identifying information to be saved to an external server. Just be aware of this before clicking the button.

iPhoneHeat has put together a guide on how to use Cydia to save your SHSH blob to the Cydia servers if you decide this is something you want to do.

You shouldn’t use the 8A320 ipsw

try to update via itunes or find the lastest 8A293 ipsw on the net. NOT the Goldmaster.

have fun with your new iOS

    • Riyad Kalla June 21, 2010 at 10:57 pm #

Carsten, thanks for the heads up. Do you happen to know why it shouldn’t be used? (I’ll update the guide with the correction)

      • Carsten June 22, 2010 at 10:16 am #

because its an old version. the 8A293 with 306,3 MB (306.274.631 Byte) size.
That worked on my 3G. Its NOT for the 3Gs!

        Should do the trick.

  2. I Babcock June 21, 2010 at 10:56 pm #

This does NOT work on 3GS

    • Riyad Kalla June 21, 2010 at 10:58 pm #

Sorry about that, just corrected the title and added an annotation that it only works on 3G. That was my goof.

  3. I Babcock June 21, 2010 at 11:01 pm #

No Sweat… just haunting google while impatiently awaiting release.

    :p

    • Riyad Kalla June 21, 2010 at 11:04 pm #

Which release are you waiting on? I’m guessing something that will jailbreak the 3GS?

I’m on my 1st gen (original) iPhone, it won’t even humor me with this guide :(

  4. munir June 21, 2010 at 11:12 pm #

    won’t this step:

Update your iPhone to iOS4 via iTunes 9.2.

cause the iphone’s baseband to be updated? my iphone 3g is running the 4.28 baseband, and im just hesitant to update via itunes before i can confirm my baseband will not change. can someone please let me know?

    • Carsten June 22, 2010 at 10:18 am #

Ah don’t be shy. Install the update, use redsn0w 095b5-3 to JB und activate it.
Start Cydia, let it do some work.
The unlock repo is already in the Cydia List. Just install ultrasn0w und your fine.

    • youngstud2476 July 7, 2010 at 12:34 am #

use snowbreeze! it will update you without updateing BB

  5. I Babcock June 21, 2010 at 11:16 pm #

Do not worry about the baseband… but read the entries on the ne version of ultrasn0w. should work with any baseband. I think it was released yesterday

  6. ast June 22, 2010 at 10:08 am #

When completing the unlock portion should the T-mobile sim card be in the phone? Thanks!

    • Carsten June 22, 2010 at 10:19 am #

no, I had my O2 card in the phone during update, JB, activation and unlock.
      Everything just worked fine.

      • ast June 22, 2010 at 10:28 am #

Thanks. So its ok to insert the T-mobile sim after the unlock then? Will this work on any Iphone 3g?

        • Carsten June 22, 2010 at 1:35 pm #

why do you want the unlock, when you have a t-mobile sim?
You need the unlock only when you want to use a carrier-bound-iphone with a carrier other than t-mobile.

But, to answer your question: The unlock enables you to use ANY sim card from ANY carrier to use with the iPhone 3G, your iPhone.

          • Riyad Kalla June 22, 2010 at 7:09 pm #

Carsten, in the US AT&T is the only official iPhone carrier. If you are want to use it on T-Mobile (the only other GSM carrier in the US) you have to carrier-unlock it.

            • Carsten June 24, 2010 at 12:51 am #

              Riyad,
              thats true.
Any Carrier that broadcasts on GSM.

  7. thecliv June 22, 2010 at 4:30 pm #

Mine gets stuck on the second reboot, any help?

    • Riyad Kalla June 22, 2010 at 7:09 pm #

thecliv, stuck how? What steps completed, what does the screen show?

      • thecliv June 22, 2010 at 7:16 pm #

for the record, i have no sim card in it. And i run redsn0w, choose the ipsw, it works, i follow dfu directions, and redsnow starts running. But then when it says “waiting for reboot” the second time, it just stays there. My iphone just shows a dimly lit black screen.

    • Chris Hunkele June 22, 2010 at 9:00 pm #

Thecliv, a couple of things to try:
      1. make sure DFU mode is properly done
      2. make sure itunes is and does NOT open
      3. quickly unplug and plug the usb cable when black
      4. run redsn0w as admin

      • thecliv June 22, 2010 at 9:10 pm #

I did all of those things, and still not working. Another interesting with is when i try to restore the iphone with the ipsw everybodys been downloading, it says the firmware file is not compatible.

        • Chris Hunkele June 22, 2010 at 9:19 pm #

thecliv, some users are reporting that error when redsn0w, and the ipsw are on the desktop… move it to somewhere else like c:/haxor

      • thecliv June 22, 2010 at 9:16 pm #

iv been at the computer for the last 9 hours and i still cant figure it out.

        • Riyad Kalla June 22, 2010 at 9:18 pm #

thecliv, you are using an iPhone 3G (and not a 3GS or 1st gen iPhone) right?

What firmware was on the 3G before you started this process?

          • thecliv June 22, 2010 at 9:23 pm #

Riyad, i think you just made me realize iv been trying to do this on a 3gs the whole time, but how can i tell the difference without being able to get into the phone? The lettering on the back is shiny like the apple logo

            • Chris Hunkele June 22, 2010 at 9:29 pm #

check the model number on the back, this is the 3GS:
              http://images.macrumors.com/article/2009/02/12/154412-chinaa.jpg

              • thecliv June 22, 2010 at 9:36 pm #

Yup, its a 3gs. Damn do i feel dumb.

                • Chris Hunkele June 22, 2010 at 9:42 pm #

well cliv, if you have a mac check out “pwnage tool 4” by the iphone dev lbog guys.. it’s also **possible** to downgrade.. but we don’t have any info here.. Sorry to hear.

  8. lou June 24, 2010 at 7:10 pm #

I have an unlocked iphone 3g ios 4 running on tmobile. I cannot access cellular data. there is no tab for cellular data so i cannot insert my apn?? any help??

    • Chris Hunkele June 24, 2010 at 7:17 pm #

Lou, did you use redsn0w to jailbreak? or is it factory unlocked?

      • Lou June 24, 2010 at 7:29 pm #

Yeah redsn0w 9.5 beta 4 or something like that.then used repo666.ultrasn0w.com to unlock and it works now with tmobile just no option for cellular data. Just 3G on/off, data on/off and roaming. I tried unlockit.co.nz and I tried installing a profile but it gave me a safari error message. I’m using wifi for now but I really need data working.

        • Carsten June 25, 2010 at 7:20 am #

try http://help.benm.at on your iphone safari.

          The access APN config go
Settings – General – Network Cellular Data Network

It should be there after installing a profile from http://help.benm.at

      • Lou June 24, 2010 at 7:31 pm #

I also have a 3GS 4.0 but I guess I have to wait to get it unlocked

      • lou June 24, 2010 at 9:30 pm #

do you know how to fix it?

        • Chris Hunkele June 28, 2010 at 8:28 pm #

Lou reread the guide, updated the bottom portion on the Cellular Data info

      • MMS GUY June 24, 2010 at 10:46 pm #

Chris i have the same problem, but i do have a 3g. any results with this?

        • Chris Hunkele June 26, 2010 at 9:40 am #

Ok guys Ive spent the past day trying to replicate the issue across a couple phones… And have been able to to do so..
I was able to loose the cellular data field when the tmobile (unsupported) sim was in the phone when restoring the phone and jailbreaking..
It looks like iTunes does something to lock it out.
When I had an ATT (supported) sim in the device all the way through the process it consistently was able to get the cellular data field..
If you dont have an ATT sim you can pick one up on ebay for $0.99

      • Zee June 25, 2010 at 3:06 pm #

        Chris,

Same here I unlocked it cause its European oddly enough so I can use it with ATT but now I don’t have data service! Please tell me there is a fix for this? Thanks

    • Malcolm June 25, 2010 at 3:41 am #

Lou, same problem here, i have a 3G and used ultrasn0w to unlock. This sucks I am back to the stone-age!

  9. MMS GUY June 24, 2010 at 10:44 pm #

I have the same problem as Lou, but i do have a 3g iphone. I followed the instructions to the T. Phone works but no data or MMS. Any help please..

  10. Srini June 25, 2010 at 5:17 am #

    Hi

I haved followed above steps exactly. Inserted t-mobile sim signal and it says no-service or it is coming and going signal. Not able to make calls. I am using t-mobile prepaid account . Any help would be great appreciated.

  11. Dennis June 25, 2010 at 2:41 pm #

Thanks! This works as a charm! I had no connection to Tmobile (Netherlands) or 3G, or whatever. Ultrasn0w did the trick.

  12. Lou June 25, 2010 at 4:56 pm #

    So does anyone know fix??

    • Carsten June 25, 2010 at 11:48 pm #

      Lou,
can you describe your problem again please. Kinda got lost during the whole texting here.

  13. NoSIMcard June 26, 2010 at 5:57 am #

    Help!

I have my old 3G that I was using as an ipod. I have no sim card. I made the mistake of upgrading it to iOS4 and now itunes wants a SIM card to activate it. I just want to use it’s old functionality. I don’t want to activate it. What can I do…

    • Chris Hunkele June 26, 2010 at 9:42 am #

NoSIMcard, Just use redsn0w and it will activate it.

      • Carsten June 26, 2010 at 2:40 pm #

as Chris says. Use the latest redsn0w to activate your phone.
You can then use it as an iPod. Or install an old firmware.

      • NoSIMcard June 27, 2010 at 8:24 am #

I trekked to the apple store. They just stuck a “test” SIM card in there and it’s working just fine. I’m afraid of the sn0w. Silly me. I have yet to trek to the darkside of jailbreaking….I’m thinking about it though. I just haven’t found an app that I really “need” yet. What I really want is a way to record phonecalls without paying a third party for the service. If anyone knows how to do that, I’d be very, very interested.

        • Nosimcard2 July 1, 2010 at 7:36 am #

Hi! I just had the same problem with my iphone, I do not have sim card, and it was working fine but I installed the iOS 4 and then it asked me for one. Did you just take it to the apple store and they could help you?

      • Habib June 30, 2010 at 2:47 pm #

I have a iphone 3g is unlock and i could make phone calls but i cant access the internet any solution

  14. Anthony June 26, 2010 at 9:15 am #

Thanks for this well thought out guide!

Can I do a carrier unlock on my 3GS ios4? I am a bit confused based on instructions and comments.

    • Chris Hunkele June 26, 2010 at 9:44 am #

Anthony, this guide is for the 3G and Redsn0w see update:
“Update #1: PwnageTool 4.01 (Mac OS X only) was released and supports jailbreaking the iPhone 3GS. So if you are on a Mac, you should be able to Jailbreak your iPhone 3GS and follow this guide as-is. For Windows users, we need to wait a bit longer.”

  15. KourtP June 26, 2010 at 12:30 pm #

I have same problem as Lou,
I have a 3g – I updated to iOS4 via iTunes (took forever) then i ran a custom .ipsw through redsn0w 0.9.5 then ran ultrasn0w 4.0. the phone works fine, i had to remove mywi for the time being because it kept putting my springboard into safemode.
however…. i cannot access my “cellular data network” setting on the phone. the menu just isnt there? any ideas?? also no MMS – only SMS, which would be obvious since I cannot access my cellular data network settings.

    • Chris Hunkele June 30, 2010 at 9:52 am #

KourtP, Dont use a custom ipsw, use the one listed above.

  16. James June 26, 2010 at 1:27 pm #

I did the unlock. (Iphone 3g 8gig) and now my Picture Messaging will not work. Any ideas how to get this to work. I been at it for 6 hours now. Thanks

    • James June 26, 2010 at 1:41 pm #

just to add, i am running off of AT&T

    • Carsten June 26, 2010 at 2:42 pm #

try http:// help.benm.at on your iphone safari.

      The access APN config go
Settings – General – Network Cellular Data Network

It should be there after installing a profile from http:// help.benm.at

any answers would be greatly appreciated

      • Riyad Kalla July 16, 2010 at 6:14 am #

@blahhh and @sosad – you have iPhone 3G’s, upgraded to iOS 4 and when you go to Settings > General > Network, at the very top, there is no “Cellular Data Network” button?

        What *is* on that screen?

      • Chris Hunkele July 16, 2010 at 9:54 pm #

@Sosad, the missing Cellular data network tab has been resolved in the new beta 5 of redsn0w.. Restore, and rejailbreak accoding to the guide, not using a backup.. and you should be good to go.

cellular data network” setting on the phone where you can use APN setting

    • Chris June 28, 2010 at 8:05 pm #

can sum help me carier unlock the phone?
i think it is ios4 but im not sure.thnx

  32. J. Green June 29, 2010 at 6:43 am #

Please read what Chris Hunlkle had to say earlier in the post. I am going to try this with my unlocked iphone, originally from Rogers but now working on a bell Canada network. I will post whether this works for me or not. My suggestion to avoid the ios4 situation is to stay unlocked on 3.1.3 ( or upgrade to 3.1.3 only) until there is more information on the net before upgrading.

“Ok guys Ive spent the past day trying to replicate the issue across a couple phones… And have been able to to do so..
If you dont have an ATT sim you can pick one up on ebay for $0.99″

    • Chris June 29, 2010 at 7:19 am #

i got the phone to work with T-mobile, but I still cant change the cellular network no matter what I try. also the phone is sluggish and slow when attempting to use any of the itunes apps – is that normal

  33. J. Green June 29, 2010 at 7:33 am #

Alternatively, I also found this in the Dev Team blog….

For the people who can’t get Cellular Data Network Tab try this (3G) only

    1. Remove ANY SIM card from the iPhone, restore iOS4 with iTunes

    2. When ready DO NOT activate iPhone with the official SIM, but insert the SIM you want to use for the phone.

    3. Use redsn0w beta 3 not 4, when iphone is still not activated. Do not select wallpaper for 3g it will make it very sluggish (Type in RedSn0w 0.9.5 beta 3 in google should be the first link)

    4. When redsn0w installs open cydia and update.

    5 Respring

    6. Open Cydia and install ultrasn0w (3G on)

    7. When reboots go Settings > General > Network, Cellular Data Network will now have options to add specif apn.

    8. You will have no service, so go back to Cydia and reinstall UltraSn0w again, reboot now you should have service!

    • Chris June 29, 2010 at 7:40 am #

what is respring and where do you get it -

    • Zee June 29, 2010 at 9:43 am #

Can you post a link cause I can’t find beta 3 in google.

  34. Alexander June 29, 2010 at 9:30 am #

i`m going to try using an Activated custom restore .ipsw and see what happens. in theory it should make bring back the tab where you configure cellular data network

  35. Chris June 29, 2010 at 11:51 am #

Leaves a key piece of info out for those of us who are not so TECH savy — when in Cydia your not going to find MMS & Tethering — you have to go to MANAGE in Cydia and ADD — http//sinfuliphonerepo.com — then once you add it you can go into that program and then you will find the MMS & Tethering tab – once you download it and have it, then you will see the Cellular Data Network tab then you can change the APN — I changed it according to the info and numbers posted above —-

    Internet:
    APN: epc.tmobile.com
    Everything else blank

    MMS:
    APN: epc.tmobile.com
    Username:
    Password:
    MMSC: mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
    MMS Proxy: 216.155.165.050:080
    MMS Max Message Size: 307200
    MMS UA Prof URL: http://www.apple.com/mms/uaprof.rdf

The other guys info is about the same so I guess it’s up to you — I really don’t know if it’s working the way it should — I’m able to go to like youtube but it takes awhile and the posts are grainy –

    • Chris June 29, 2010 at 11:53 am #

I failed to mention that when you go to MANAGE in Cydia it’s SOURCES that your going to go into to ADD the http//sinfuliphonerepo.com

  36. Alexander June 29, 2010 at 2:00 pm #

the activated custom .ipsw didn`t work….

You need to run ultrasnow to unlock the carrier

  38. Suz June 30, 2010 at 6:58 am #

    Hello,

I have followed all the instructions, my i phone 3g is jail-broken and I thought it was unlocked, but i keep getting a message “Your selected network is restricted” so clearly the unlock hasn’t worked.
Any ideas, or just go through whole process again? I have unlocked iphones before and there has not been any problem.

    Cheers Guys

    • Chris Hunkele June 30, 2010 at 9:51 am #

Suz, have you run ultrasn0w? part 2 of the guide

      • Suz July 1, 2010 at 2:29 am #

Hey there thanks for the reply Chris, I ended up calling o2 (network) last night, it turns out that the phone is blacklisted through the IMEI number, so its been reported lost or stolen. (So jailbreak and unlock worked but its just an ipod touch for intents and purposes….) They (o2) told me that if I can trace the original owner, the person that reported it lost or stolen to call whoever it was that they reported it lost or stolen too, are you still with me… well that is the only way to “un-blacklist” the little bugger! But its not all bad news, I contacted the guy I bought it from on e-bay and he has very decently said that he will refund me if I send it back, so I will do that. Thank god there are some decent people about… Thanks for you comment anyway. Suz

Im Still not getting and 3g internet, anyone else having the same problem? Im on 3 mobile

    • Riyad Kalla June 30, 2010 at 9:31 am #

Steve, I think you meant “T-Mobile” instead of “3 mobile” in which case you won’t be able to get a 3G signal ever using the iPhone — unfortunately our story about the original iPhone 3G not working on T-Mobile story still holds true — the iPhone still does not have a 3G antenna in it that is compatible with T-Mobile’s broadcast band that they use for 3G — specifically the 1700/2100mhz bands.

So the iPhone 3G, 3GS and iPhone 4 still don’t support 3G signals on T-Mobile unfortunately, just EDGE.

Steve are you using a custom ipsw? or the one listed above? and by “no good” what do you mean?

        • Steve June 30, 2010 at 10:03 am #

Hi Chris, Im using the backup file for the 4.0 from my itunes and running the redsnow 0.9.5b5-5 on it, I have it all installed and everything but the 3g works fine.

  42. Steve June 30, 2010 at 10:04 am #

Steve, do you have internet? have you filled out the APN settings? Is the 3g switch in the off position?
The one in this image .

      • Steve June 30, 2010 at 5:56 pm #

Hi Chris, I had no problem with the 3g before the upgrade, the 3g symbol is showing up in the corner. Where do I find the APN settings?

        • Chris Hunkele June 30, 2010 at 7:43 pm #

          Settings>Network>Cellular Data Network>APN
You will have to find the settings, I searched and cant find settings for 3Mobile or 3G Mobile.
Your carriers support dept will probably be able to give you that.

          • Steve July 1, 2010 at 2:48 am #

I have VPN settings but no APN ?

            • Steve July 1, 2010 at 7:48 am #

Do you think I need to restore it and start over to get this setting ?
I have loaded up 0.9.5b5-5 but only after using the older one first.

              • Steve July 1, 2010 at 10:46 am #

Anyone else still not getting 3g internet on their phone? I just had a call from one of my friends and he says his one isnt working after doing the crack and I cant find the APN settings on my phone.

                • Chris Hunkele July 3, 2010 at 9:42 am #

Steve, restart the guide from the top, using the files specified. And don’t restore from a backup this time.

  50. Gaf July 2, 2010 at 4:09 am #

Great instructions, only trouble i had was when i opened cydia, there was no ultrasnow, so i had to add it manually. like so…

    Open Cydia, then click
    Manage >
    Sources >
    “Edit”
    “Add” >
    then type in box “http://repo666.ultrasnow.com”
    click “Add Sorce”

    let it do its thing,

then in the manage > sources page “ultrasnow” should be at the top
    - click “repo66.ultrasn0w.com
it takes you to another page
    - click “ultrasn0w”
this then takes you to the ultrasnow install page
    click “install” (top right)

    let it do its thing.

    Click reboot cydia….job done.

    • Riyad Kalla July 2, 2010 at 8:19 am #

Gaf, thanks for providing those steps for anyone that isn’t seeing ultrasn0w in cydia.

      • gaf July 2, 2010 at 11:15 am #

most welcome, these instructions helped me out a lot. although after reading over my comment i’ve realised i entered the repository address wrong, it should read..
        instead of..

        cheers

        • Riyad Kalla July 2, 2010 at 11:33 am #

@Gaf, thanks for the correction. I updated the guide as well for folks that were running into trouble and pointed to your comment for direction.

            Sydney,

You sure you are entering a zero instead of the letter “o” in “redsn0w” in the URL?

You can hit the URL in the browser to confirm it displays a landing page to make sure you have it right.

i found a solution to fix the low res pic messaging.

Open Cydia and make sure http://www.sinfuliphonerepo.com is added to your sources
Tap on Sections > SiNfuL iPhone and install T-Mobile iOS4 MMS Fix

          After installing and rebooting…
          - Go into Settings -> General -> Network -> Cellular Data Network
          - Make sure your settings are as follows…

          Cellular Data
          APN: epc.tmobile.com
          —–wap.voicestream.com
          —–internet2.voicestream.com
(Choose the correct APN depending on what kind of account you have)

  53. Tizzer July 2, 2010 at 11:12 pm #

I have been reading about jailbreaking and unlocking for the last month and I still do not feel comfortable doing it because I don’t know how. I have a 3G with 3.1.3 firmware and 5.12.01 baseband. I have not updated through iTunes even though it is available. I keep reading conflicting information that it works fine then I read where it doesn’t. I want to switch from ATT to T-Mobile. I am not very savvy when it comes to this. Can somebody please give me a step-by-step detailed way to do it? I don’t even know which software to use. I hear some say spirit is good unless you want to unlock, I hear about ultrasnow and cydia and…..i don’t know what to do and I”m pulling my hair out every night trying to figure it out. Do I need to upgrade or can I do it with my current 3.1.3 firmware and 5.12.01 bb?

    • Riyad Kalla July 3, 2010 at 7:25 am #

      Tizzer,

The guide, at the top of this page, does exactly what you want. It walks you step-by-step through the process of upgrading your 3G to iOS 4.

  54. LPTech July 3, 2010 at 10:21 am #

I have a iPhone 3G, OS4. Redsn0w stalls at the first “Waiting for reboot”. It just hangs on that screen. Any ideas?

    • Chris Hunkele July 3, 2010 at 10:23 am #

Make sure you have a fresh reboot, run redsn0w in XP compatibility mode, run as administrator, and make sure itunes is not running.

    • Tom July 4, 2010 at 7:49 am #

reboot the phone. if that fails, hold power and home until it reboots, this wont effect the jailbreak itll just take an extra minute to boot back up

    • Tom July 4, 2010 at 7:51 am #

^^^^^^^ sorry i did not read the question correctly, try restarting the computer lol

    Hi Riyad, again…

The last time I’ve done anything om my iPhone was with your help…. so, I’ll feel free to ask the following:
Got the 3G running on 3.0 – 04.26.08. and would like to know if it’s save at this point to update my iPhone to iOS4 via iTunes 9.2..??? and follow your guide to jailbreak it…??

    Thanks in advance
    Paul

    • Riyad Kalla July 4, 2010 at 7:12 am #

      Hey Paul!

Thanks for coming back and checking things out. Chris has been following the iOS 4 crack scene for a while before putting this guide together and has worked through it about 8 times on his own iPhone 3G (not 3GS) while writing the guide and troubleshooting for other folks — he is on T-Mobile here in the US if that helps — so our confidence in the guide is really high.

We made sure to detail every step as clearly as possible to make sure there weren’t any hickups.

Also had quite a few folks in other countries on other networks having success as well so I think you should be all set.

      – 1 other thought as to why you should do the guide now, is incase Apple does an iOS 4.1 release and relocks the baseband again and we have to wait weeks for new unlock cracks to come out. If you do the guide now and upgrade to iOS 4, we know that works, so you could at least get on that version of the OS and be there while future versions get worked on.

      • Paulo Santos July 4, 2010 at 7:24 am #

… as always, prompt responses….. that’s what makes me come back every time…. thank you!
Now, I´m in Angola, Africa… and my 3G has been working fine ever since I’ve upgrade it from 2.0 to 3.0 with your help, and it seems that I’ll be doing it again….!
Once again, thank you for all the hard work, hours and “help” you’ve been giving us to make our lives a lot easier…..
        Regards

        Paul

        • Riyad Kalla July 4, 2010 at 7:29 am #

Paul, we certainly appreciate the kind words. I know Chris spent a lot of time on this guide, he will be happy to read this.

Note: I´ve tryed almost everything that comes on the Apple “Alert Messages” support page.

            Thanks

Paul, I’m not sure I follow what’s happening exactly or what is showing you an error (iTunes? redsn0w? Windows?)

The first thing off the top of my head though is that it’s probably redsn0w unable to upload the ramdisk to your iPhone. Are you sure you are right-clicking on redsn0w and going to Properties and setting it’s Compatibility Mode to “Windows XP”, and then you run it, right-clicking on it and selecting “Run as Administrator”?

If you haven’t done those steps, that might be what is wrong. If you have done those steps, give us a bit more context as to what you are doing and what is dying and we’ll see if we can help.

                Hey…

iTunes gives the “unknown error 13″ I’ve done it all as asked, but the error keeps on popping up… Using Windows Vista…
Took it home (Windows XP) and the restore went well and fast…. now on DFU mode….. don’t seem to be able to get out of it… follow the steps as described and noting …
                Tired fingers at this stage…hehehehe
                Regards
                Paul

                • Riyad Kalla July 6, 2010 at 11:13 am #

Paul glad to hear you got past the iTunes hickup at least.

Where in DFU are you stuck? The process looks something like this:

                  1. iPhone is in doc, connected to computer.
                  2. iTunes is closed (only redsn0w running)
                  3. iPhone is OFF, totally off… as in hold-down-power-then-slide-to-turn-off.
                  4. You then hit “Next” on redsn0w to start the DFU steps and then go through the steps for DFU mode on your iPhone which are approximately:
                  * Power button for 2 seconds
                  * Power + Home buttons for 9 seconds
                  * Let go of power and keep holding Home button for 20 more seconds

                  5. redsn0w will detect the iPhone now in DFU mode and upload the ramdisk to it and other data starting the jailbreak process.

So which part is barfing? What are you doing and what is the iPhone/redsn0w doing?

                • Chris Hunkele July 6, 2010 at 12:11 pm #

Paul, error 13 is usually a USB problem, try the following:

First try force restart, hold both power and home untill phone reboots…. if not try:

1.Make sure you are not using a USB hub, plug direct
                  2.Try a different cable
                  3.Use this startup/reinstall method:
                  a. close out itunes and disconnect your phone
                  b. turn your phone completely off
                  c. relaunch itunes
                  d. plug in the usb end into your computer, but do not connect your iphone yet
e: This is the somewhat tricky part….hold down the round circle home button while you plug in your iphone.

                • Chris Hunkele July 6, 2010 at 12:14 pm #

also Paulo, do NOT use a back up to restore from, only do a fresh install.

any news on the “no service” problem yet?

  58. Steve July 5, 2010 at 9:39 pm #

Hello all, I pretty much got through the jailbreak and unlocking process, only too encounter the network settings resetting everytime the phone was shut off. Anyone have a fix for that yet?

    • Riyad Kalla July 6, 2010 at 11:14 am #

Steve, very strange… you on a 3G iPhone with iOS 4 now? Followed the guide exactly, didn’t use any different versions of anything?

And is it when the device sleeps or when it is actually powered off then back on? Are you talking about wifi settings, or you mean full on mobile network APN settings are getting lost?

      • Steve July 6, 2010 at 1:55 pm #

I haven’t tried your particular guide or file yet, but I did jailbreak and unlock the phone. When you shut it off the network settings disappear. Not the sleep mode. Thanks.. I was using the file downloaded from itunes..

        • Riyad Kalla July 6, 2010 at 2:59 pm #

Steve, I’m still not clear if it’s the wifi network settings or the mobile network (APN) settings… either way that’s very odd.

Did you use an official IPSW file originally to do the iOS 4 upgrade and how did you jailbreak and unlock it? Did you use spirit?

          • Steve July 6, 2010 at 6:13 pm #

Apn settings, and I used the file downloaded from Itunes. I initially took the phone to a local shop and he jailbroke and unlocked it the first time for me, not sure what he used. But this time I used redsnow and was able to jailbrake and unlock it,but everytime I turn it off I lose those apn settings and have to put them in again. The person at t-mobile told me that it had something to with Itunes.

            • Riyad Kalla July 6, 2010 at 6:18 pm #

Steve, thanks for the details… unfortunately I don’t know what is causing the lost settings. The only thing I can think of is to work back through the guide from top to bottom and see if your results differ.

I normally wouldn’t recommend such a big-bang approach for a mostly working phone, but I just don’t know what the fix it for the APN settings not to get lost all the time.

              Sorry man :(

            • Chris Hunkele July 6, 2010 at 6:26 pm #

Steve, have you done a fresh reinstall of everything yet? not using your backup?
Run through the guide again download the files we point to only, and try it again.

              • Steve July 6, 2010 at 9:17 pm #

O.K. thanks guys for all your help. I tried a fresh install just not with the files you recommend. The file I used was from itunes. Will try with your files, if it doesn’t work I will just take it back too the shop again and have it downgraded since I can’t seem to find the file to do it myself.
                Once again thanks…….

    Riyad

Which part is barfing..?? redsn0w is working fine…. I’ve started both, normally from my desktop and also as Admin… I go trough the steps as described and then, every time.. at the end of the process I get “No device detected. You probably misunderstood the instructions. Please consult………bla..bla…”
And, this is new, iTunes automatically starts…, don´t understand that, but..!
…back to the start I go and do it all again…. my fingers are really tired now… hgehehe

    Regards

    Paul

    • Riyad Kalla July 6, 2010 at 11:31 am #

      Paul,

I’m still not sure what your iPhone itself is doing during this process — for example, if it *is* going into DFU mode or just starting up normally.

If you aren’t doing the button sequences right and the iPhone isn’t going into DFU mode correctly, then redsn0w will never be able to find it.

If you are doing DFU mode correctly and redsn0w still cannot find it, make sure iTunes is closed down… I think having it open and redsn0w at the same time causes contention for the USB device connection that redsn0w needs to upload the modified ramdisk.

I am having the same problem as Steve. My APN setting reset every time I reboot. This is weird…..never happened on 3.1.3. Everything else runs flawlessly.

            • Chris Hunkele July 6, 2010 at 8:53 pm #

Luke, what method did you use to get your APN/MMS settings? The SSH method of via the repository?

              • Luke July 6, 2010 at 10:33 pm #

I am inputting them manually, but I also downloaded the tmobile prepaid carrier rock app if that’s what u were referring to. FYI- fast response bro!

Luke, The SSH method seems to work more consistantly, it sounds like this might work beter for you. If you do wind up doing that you will need to do a fresh restore, rejailbreak.

Question – I got my iphone working with T-mobile and all — but I can’t seem to transfer my contacts from my sim card to my iphone – does that mean that I won’t be able to do that? Second – if I take out the T-mobile sim card from the iphone will I have to go through the whole jailbreak thing again — or just putting back the card it will work again — just have to re-enter all the APN stuff –

    • Riyad Kalla July 6, 2010 at 10:50 pm #

Chris I don’t know if you can transfer contacts from the SIM to the iPhone’s internal memory… I sort of think you can’t, but iTunes can sync your contacts with multiple sources and/or your iPhone can sync directly using Exchange protocol with Gmail for contacts if you use gmail — that’s damn handy.

Also the phone will remain unlocked if you remove the SIM then pop it back in. “Relocking” of the phone would actually have to be a modification to the baseband on the phone via low-level software like a firmware upgrade… so if you aren’t doing that, you’ll be fine.

      • Chris July 6, 2010 at 10:54 pm #

Many thanks Riyad! I was worried about that if I took the card out – One more question — I can send picture messages but I can’t receive them — is that normal? My VPN currently matches the original on given up above at the beginning –

        • Chris Hunkele July 7, 2010 at 7:07 am #

Chris, you need to send one to yourself first.. its a tmobile thing

I’m having the same problem and I sent one to myself first, but it didn’t work. I’m still getting a message that says, “The media content was not included due to a picture resolution or message size restriction.” I have no Max Message Size down, I left it blank. I can’t figure this out for the life of me. Any ideas?

              • Chris Hunkele July 16, 2010 at 9:25 pm #

@alaina21, Have you tried the SSH method listed in the guide? i was also having problems, and this very easily fixed it.

    • Riyad Kalla July 7, 2010 at 8:23 am #

Chris, I was totally wrong – you can import your contacts from your SIM card.

      Go to Settings:

then go to Mail, Contacts, Calendars:

and it’s a button right at the bottom. Sorry about that mixup.

      Great to hear Paulo

    • Riyad Kalla July 7, 2010 at 7:58 am #

Paul that’s awesome to hear man, I know what it’s like to fight with a device for *days* only to have it magically work… the euphoria usually outweights my need to know why it wasn’t working :)

As for the apps, as long as you had iTunes set to “Sync” your apps previously, and you plug the iPhone back in, it should re-sync the apps back to the iPhone.

This does not include unofficial apps, like Cydia or other jailbroken apps though — just the officially supported ones.

NOTE: When I did my 3.1.2 upgrade to my phone though, the redsn0w process changed up my home screens and reset screen #1 and #2, and pushed my apps to screens #3 and #4, which I didn’t notice right away, so I thought I had lost them, but they were still on my device, just slid over an extra 2 screens. I don’t know if that is your situation or not, but worth a heads up.

I’m traveling to the U.K. – hoping to use a Pay & Go SIM in my iPhone 3G.

If I do the carrier unlock now, can I still use my phone on AT&T until I get to London? Or do I need to wait until I’m ready with my new SIM before unlocking?

    I have already successfully jailbroke my iPhone 3g (ios4) with redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5.

    Many thanks.

The country I will be working in has its own cell network and I want to be able to just pop in a SIM card for my phone when there and put my original AT&T card back in when I return. Is this possible? I am already jailbreaking the phone so I can try to run Easy Grade Pro (clipboard) on my iPhone. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

I was wondering what would happen if i were to jailbreak my phone again and reinstall cydia, would the unlock stay on my phone or will i need to unlock it again?
It’s just that for some reason i can’t add new sources to cydia, the app just freazes on downloading packages or somewhere along the line…
    iPhone 3g (os 4)

    • Chris Hunkele July 9, 2010 at 8:20 am #

Alexander, you would not have to reinstall ultrasn0w if you are jsut re-jailbreaking.. However, i dont know how much cydia would like it having reinstalled again… I’ve seen mention of “installing over itself” and “multiple copies”.. You MIGHT have to just restore, and restart the process, in which case have to run ultrasn0w again… let us know if just reinstalling cydia works for you!

      • Carsten July 9, 2010 at 8:53 am #

you can just do it again. I have done it three times. first got multitask enabled, aw phone so slow. So I did the redsn0w process a second time without the multitask but with boot logo. phone was faster now but I hate the logo
so i did it a third time just with cydia and with background picture.

after re-doing the redsn0w process cydia starts updating the sources when you start it.
you re-install cydia so it should work fine.

    Hey..

I’ve got (I think) everything working (thank you guys), but I’ve came across a little problem last night, installed “Guitar Hero” trough iTunes and the icon comes up on the screen, but not on the phone.. anyone..? I can´t see it on the phone, and I know it’s installed…!

PS:Does anyone here has heard of “SiManager”..?? Where can I get it..?

    Thank you

    Paul

    • Riyad Kalla July 10, 2010 at 6:24 am #

Paul, I bet you have more home screens than you think — can you slide to the right from the home screen and see if you have a few extra?

That is what happened to me — after the update I went from 2 home screens to 4, and the 3rd one was empty. So when I connected to iTunes I would see 4 pages of apps, but on my actual phone I thought I only saw 2 — I just forgot to keep scrolling to the right to see the other ones that got moved.

As for SiManager, never heard of it. What does it do?

      • Paulo Santos July 10, 2010 at 6:46 am #

        Riyad..

Negative, I’ve tried all of the sliding there is and still nothing. On the iTunes screen it shows the 4 screens that I have on the phone, with the exception of the “Guitar Hero” icon that is not showing on the phone.

As per “SiManager” from what I Googled, it’s a “from/to” Sim writer. which means, that you can now save all the number on the phone directly into the Sim.
When upgrading I lost all my contacts that where on the phone, with this type of software, I could save them into the sim before upgrading.

        Regards

        Paul

        • Riyad Kalla July 10, 2010 at 6:50 am #

Curses! I thought it would be an easy fix.

I really don’t know what’s up… if you hold down home and get the icons into “jiggly” mode, is there a marker anywhere for Guitar Hero? What happens when you go into the App Store and try and re-install it, does it mark it as already installed?

If you look in iTunes where it is in the user interface, then go over to the phone and look where it’s suppose to be, is there another icon there or just an empty spot? I wonder if you juggling the icons around maybe two are stacked? (even though I think that’s suppose to be impossible).

I’m grasping at straws though, I’m not sure why it’s not showing up Paul :(

          • Paulo Santos July 11, 2010 at 3:11 am #

No to your first question, don´t see it at all, to the second one, all normal, through iTunes deleted and then re-install, at the end, still no icon on the phone.
Another “no” to the 3rd question, there’s nothing on the phone.
If to the last question you mean, one icon on top of the other, no… with 4.0 you can now move one icon into another one and you get a different folder icon with the 2 inside.

            Thanks
            Paul

Hello again…cleared the phone completely and followed the instructions exactly. Still getting the “Searching…” screen despite multiple resets of the network and phone along with ultrasn0w reinstalls.

Please help! Live in Manhattan so definitely not an issue with spotty t-mobile service (and have tested my other multiple t-mo phones and service is fine).

      • Riyad Kalla July 11, 2010 at 8:29 am #

OMR just not sure what is going on — are you on a iPhone 3G (not a 3GS)? you have any friends with T-Mobile sims that you can try in your phone to see if it’s a SIM issue?

        • OMR July 12, 2010 at 4:36 pm #

Yes, on a 3G. Have not tried another sim card, but the one I currently have is working fine on my G1. May try to reset and start completely over again, but don’t see it making much difference. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Thanks again.

      • OMR July 14, 2010 at 8:38 am #

Did a complete clean install last night with the following results. Iphone found service this morning with full bars on T-Mobile. Made one call to my voicemail which went through successfully. Afterward, full bars but could not make any other calls — would say dialing and for about a minute and then call would fail.

Service has been going from full bars to “No Service” with no apparent reasoning. Cannot make any incoming calls to the phone either.

Note, this is in midtown Manhattan, so service shouldn’t be an issue. With my Android G1, no service issues — 3/4 to full bars everywhere including apartment and office. According to the individual that had the phone prior on AT&T, service was generally fine, definitely not what I am seeing.

Just not sure where to head at this point. Certainly seems like a software issue as SIM works in other phones on t-mobile (I’ve swapped into three other phones and everything works perfectly) and phone itself worked on AT&T.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, especially given so many success stories on here. Thanks again.

OMR, unless you can snag a friend’s SIM to test if there is something wonky with your account I would actually lean more towards a hardware issue with the phone than a software one.

Not 100%, but if the phone is unable to keep a signal that seems like a possible hardware issue.

If you can take your SIM and pop it into a friends phone (either another unlocked iPhone or some other T-Mobile phone) and it grabs the signal just like the G1 just fine, I think the 3G you have might have problems.

I suppose it’s possible it could still be a software issue, I just don’t know how to troubleshoot that… you could check Cydia or the App Store for a “signal strength” app and see what the signal is actually doing? For example, is it getting dropped OR is T-Mo kicking the phone via it’s IMEI off the network or something like that?

I don’t think we have enough data points yet to decide which part of the puzzle is failing unfortunately.

          • OMR July 14, 2010 at 9:15 am #

Okay, thank you Riyad. I actually have another T-mobile SIM card that I will transfer my account information over to and see if that has any different results. As mentioned, my current SIM works fine on two other t-mobile phones so that’s why I tend to think it’s not a SIM issue. (though hope it is as that would seem to be an easy fix).

Otherwise, the phone was my brother’s and he said it worked fine on AT&T up until his recent change over the the iPhone 4. That’s why I’m leaning toward a software issue. I’m a bit cautious with using someone elses SIM in the phone…is there any potential damage that the phone could cause damage to their SIM?

            Thanks much again.

            • Riyad Kalla July 14, 2010 at 9:23 am #

OMR, I missed that you already tested the SIM in other T-Mobile phones; I agree with you, it doesn’t sound like a SIM issue.

If the phone came from your brother, a *really* easy test would be to get his old SIM card from him that was in the 3G, pop it back in and see if it picks up a signal just fine and keeps it.

He will have to keep his iPhone 4 off during that time so you don’t have two devices trying to grab the same account connection, but that would at least give you a definitive answer.

The iPhone 4 uses a microsim, so he wouldn’t even have to pop it out of his own phone, he likely still has the old original SIM he had in the 3G laying around and that is what I’m referring to testing with.

As far as doing damage by moving SIMs around, it *shouldn’t* do any damage. It’s just like you two were buying phones from each other and trying them out on your carrier.

You don’t have to do any of this of course, it’s just the only think I can think of to try and figure out if it’s hardware or not… I guess you could try the software antenna reception issue to see what the phone is doing if you’d rather avoid the SIM stuff.

No other ideas come to mind :(

              • OMR July 14, 2010 at 10:24 am #

Appreciate all the help/advice Riyad! I will try to swap out the sim with my brother next time I’m up in CT. In the interim, I am going to have t-mobile activate my other SIM to see if anything changes. Will definitely keep you posted of any progress. Thank you.

  68. lulu July 13, 2010 at 8:08 am #

    Hello all,
Really appreciate all your hard work and hands on guidance. This is the site for me.
Never had an iPhone before. I live in the US. A pal picked up a 4 and gave me his 3G (not 3GS) running 4.0 with latest firmware.
I am on T-Mobile and want to stay.
Bottom line? I read through the jailbreak/unlock guides and posts and see a lot of trouble shooting and knowledge I am not necessarily prepared for. Seems like I really run the risk of mucking up the phone and stressing over it for days with a not so definite conclusion at the end of the process. I have yet to read a USA post for T-Mobile usage with a happy ending. Am I wrong?
My main question though: The post keeps popping up that T-Mobile doesn’t run a 3G network so what’s the point? What kind of phone and internet service will I have if any?

    • Chris Hunkele July 13, 2010 at 12:47 pm #

lulu, Like with many public or service oriented things, typically the only ones voicing themselves are the people with problem or complaints. Dont get discouraged by what you see. There are a couple people that have posted their success on here, as recently Saurabh did just now, the rest are successful and go about their merry way… If you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself, there are people who can do it for you, like on craigslist.org. As for you question about T-Mobile’s 3G, you are correct. The iPhone cannot use the tmobiles 3G, ATT knew that, and leveraged apple to leave the 1700mhz band (tmobiles freq.) out of the 3G chip. But you CAN use the 2G or edge network. I also have a 3G on Tmobile and that’s what I do. Yes my friend’s iPhone on ATT pulls up a web page in 1/2 the time, but its no big deal to me, I can wait the extra 3 seconds. 2 years ago there wasn’t even an iphone that ran on 3G, so its not like your in the download stone age. Let us know how it goes!

      • lulu July 13, 2010 at 12:56 pm #

        Thanks Chris,
A pal who has unlocked many a phone is going to hold my hand in a couple of weeks when I go at it which makes a difference for me.
Not to sound like a total idiot but is there anything I need to do as far as settings and/or software are concerned to run it on the 2G or Edge networks? Speed isn’t important to me, I was concerned about the people who weren’t getting phone and/or web services at all… but I believe the answer to that is they’re running 3G on t-mobile networks. So I need to know if there’s anything special I need to do to put the phone on edge or 2G.
You are correct, as a friend of mine who is a minister says, “People only come to me with their troubles, rarely their joys. But that’s the job.”
        Best, lulu

        • lulu July 13, 2010 at 1:05 pm #

          Chris,
Actually, turns out there’s a well known store in C-town here in NYC that jailbreaks and unlocks… I think I might pay them a visit. $25

          • Chris Hunkele July 13, 2010 at 1:13 pm #

Nope, the only special thing you have to do it turn off the 3G toggle (see screenshot in the guide). :)

            • lulu July 13, 2010 at 1:16 pm #

              Thanks,
You guys are great, no nastiness and snobbery.
And sorry if I disappoint you by having someone else do it for me. I’m pretty Mac savvy but my patience and time are short these days. Please forgive. lulu

              • Chris Hunkele July 13, 2010 at 1:24 pm #

Lulu, not at all! May the iPhone be with you.

    • Riyad Kalla July 13, 2010 at 6:01 pm #

Saurabh, that’s badass. Glad it’s working all the way on the other side of the world for you ;)

      • Saurabh Shankar July 14, 2010 at 12:25 am #

Thanks Riyad…I was about to pay around INR 1600 ($30) here for the same, till I came across this link :) .

Btw does iOS4 work slow on iphone 3G

        • Riyad Kalla July 14, 2010 at 8:10 am #

Saurabh, I have heard that because of the background task support it *does* run slow on the 3G. I saw somewhere that someone commented on “disabling background tasks” which helped a bit, but I don’t know how they did that.

  70. lulu July 14, 2010 at 8:23 am #

Gentlemen. Took me one hour and my iphone is A) unlocked B) running T-Mobile as if it was born to. I put my fears aside and ran the programs just as you described (I hope!) and all seems well. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Now, a question, do I need to purchase a “data package” from T-Mobile? Everything seems to be running but are they going to slap a plan on me or call me at some point? That’s what’s happened with ATT users in the past. Chris? I believe you are still up and running everything without a data plan… ? lulu

    • lulu July 14, 2010 at 8:54 am #

ps. I think this question was already asked but I can’t locate it in the thread, is it possible to move (or somehow access to make calls) my SIM contacts to my iPhone contacts? Probably not…

      • Riyad Kalla July 14, 2010 at 9:19 am #

lulu, Chris should be back around later to address your previous question, but I can help with the SIM import (yes you can). Here’s how:

        Go to Settings:

then go to Mail, Contacts, Calendars:

and it’s a button right at the bottom.

        • lulu July 14, 2010 at 9:32 am #

Thanks Riyad! Just spent an hour manually transferring everything into my laptop Address Book… which in a way is better as I’d get lots of duplicates for people I have in SIM as well as Address… learning new things daily. You guys rock. lulu

    • Chris Hunkele July 14, 2010 at 9:57 am #

Lulu, Congrats! No you dont *need* to purchase a data package, and tmobile wont automagically add a package to your plan.. You can just use wi-fi. I actually have a data plan, but not a 3G plan. If you want to add a data package, just follow the steps in the “APN” section to get you hooked up to the tmo data network.

      • lulu July 14, 2010 at 10:09 am #

Thanks Chris, for everything… whoo hoo!

I’m going to stick with no data as that’s what pissed me off (one of the many things) about ATT… no iPhone without data plan. I don’t need/want much service other than phone and on the road so I didn’t want to pay for something I wouldn’t use much. Now I don’t have to, thanks to you guys. Keep on flyin’

Does anyone know how to remove WINTERBOARD!!!!

    • Riyad Kalla July 16, 2010 at 6:27 am #

      Chris,

We got this reply (from a reader named Salam) email to us, but I think it’s intended for you:

Go to cydia search for winterboard click on it the same way you installed it but this time it will ask if you would like to uninstall

    • Chris Hunkele July 16, 2010 at 9:52 pm #

@Chris, You can remove winterboard by going Cydia>Manage>Packages>Modify>Uninstall

  72. Gaz July 15, 2010 at 4:16 pm #

i have an iPhone 3G on O2 (UK) which has been blacklisted. It is an 8GB without WiFi and no network access so far.

I have JB’d the phone, and managed to install ultrasn0w offline using Cyder through my PC.

i have the No Service error showing, and every network is showing as “restricted”

If I remove ultrasn0w through Cydia will the file still be availible for me to reinstall through the iPhone or will it uninstall and delete the file.

I’ve been on this for 9hrs now, please help before I smash the iPhone into pieces and slit my wrists with the shards.

    • Riyad Kalla July 16, 2010 at 6:30 am #

      Gaz,

There are a few bits I’m confused about:

      * “8GB without WIFI”, you mean you have WIFI turned off right and not that the phone doesn’t have a WIFI antenna, right?

      * “every network” — which networks have you tried? Do you have multiple SIMS on the same network to test with, or multiple SIMS across multiple networks?

      * “If I remove Cydia, will *the file*…” — I guess you mean Cydia here right? If you uninstall it from the iPhone, it’s toast. So the only way to get Cydia back would be to re-run through the guide and run the redsn0w part again which will reinstall Cydia.

Are you positive the phone works? I wonder if it was tampered with somehow and can’t work?

    • Chris Hunkele July 16, 2010 at 9:48 pm #

@Gaz, if you have a blacklisted iPhone, you will probably not have much luck in the UK with any service provider. Carriers frequently share banned IMEI numbers. If you remove ultrasn0w, yes if will be available to still reinstall via cydia.

I have an unlocked iPhone 3G running on Version 3.0 (7A341) and Modem Firmware 04.26.08. Can you please send a step by step guide to update it to iOS 4.0 and then to again unlock it to use it with any carrier. I am asking this because when i try to update it iTunes it will update it to iOS 4.0.1 and I think that will lock my phone, Please advise.

Thanks for your support so far.

    Regards,

    Pankaj

    • Riyad Kalla July 16, 2010 at 2:06 pm #

      Pankaj,

This page is exactly what you are asking for… a step by step guide to install iOS 4 on an iPhone 3G and then jailbreak AND unlock it.

      • Pankaj July 16, 2010 at 2:13 pm #

        Hi Riyad,

Thanks for your quick reply but it still doesnt solve my query. In the step 1 described by you it says update to iOS 4.0 thru iTunes but now since an updated iOS 4.0.1 is released an update thru itunes doesnt let me update to 4.0 but directly to 4.0.1. So i Just want to check if that would make any problem.

Secondly, should i take any other precautions before I update like backing up, etc etc…

        Waiting for your reply. Thanks

        • Riyad Kalla July 16, 2010 at 2:20 pm #

          Pankaj,

Sorry about that, I missed that portion of the original question.

We haven’t tested 4.0.1 just yet, so I don’t know the answer to that question unfortunately and I don’t want to guess an answer and be wrong :(

        • Chris Hunkele July 16, 2010 at 9:29 pm #

@Pankaj, in step 1 you are actually manually specifying iOS4.0 using the shift click method…. you are telling iTunes to use the IPSW file you downloaded…. Your phone will not be upgraded to 4.0.1 if you properly use this method.

  74. lulu July 17, 2010 at 2:49 pm #

What’s the good word on a jailbreak for iphone 3GS running 4.0
Is it possible without having to almost take the phone apart?
A pal just got one and wants to be free…

    • Riyad Kalla July 17, 2010 at 2:53 pm #

      lulu, the word is “good”!

Your friend should be able to just step through “Step 1: Jailbreak” of the guide and be all set.

      • lulu July 17, 2010 at 2:58 pm #

Um… sorry riyad, me a little slow over here if you didn’t already know, “step through” meaning skip? So they’d simply unlock without a jailbreak? Many sites say 3GS on 4.0 can’t be jailbreaked… broken… broke… whatevah.

        • Riyad Kalla July 17, 2010 at 3:07 pm #

lulu, my appologies – as usual Chris has got my back with corrections. I read through your question too fast.

Please pay attention to him instead :)

          • Chris Hunkele July 17, 2010 at 3:14 pm #

@Lulu “Geohot” the creator of blackra1n has retired for now from the jailbreak scene, and will not be releasing anytime soon… I would link you to his twitter post, but he has made it private..

      • Chris Hunkele July 17, 2010 at 3:00 pm #

@Lulu, because you your friend has a 3GS, he will NOT be able to use this guide…. Tell you friend to look for a guide for PwnageTool, its mac only, or Sn0wbreeze, those are the only two that will be able to jail break a 3GS. Unfortunately we do not have a guide here.

        • lulu July 17, 2010 at 3:04 pm #

          Thanks Chris/Riyad,
Thats what I thought. From what I’ve looked at the process for the 3GS seems a bit long, involved and sketchy at the moment so I’m going to tell him to wait a bit to “break” it till a good and simple tool comes out. What about blackra1n for Mac? Rumors fly that it works on the 3GS… but my instincts tell me not on 4.0
          lulu

          • lulu July 17, 2010 at 3:13 pm #

I looked around, seems we need to find out his Bootrom status, whatever that is, before we can proceed with an untethered and easier jailbreak which is probably the best way to go for this guy… will let you know what happens.
            As always, thanks.

Hello all. Wanted to touch base to see if anyone has had any success with the “searching/no service” issue on the 4.0 ios with 05.13.04 and bootloader 05.09. I still have yet to find a way to downgrade the ios (fuzzyband does not support 4.0). Have read on other sites that others are having the same issue of not getting any service despite unlocking and using ultrasn0w.

Think ultrasn0w is the issue and interested to hear any ideas. Again, my other t-mobile phones work fine with my current sim and the unlocked 3g works fine with a at&t sim. Frustrating to say the least.

    Hey guys,
iTunes wants me to update my (jailbroken, unlocked) iphone from 4.0 to 4.0.1…. my instinct is to leave things as they are… what say you? Is 4.0.1 supported by the jailbreak I did last week or would I have to do it all over again with an updated jailbreak tool?
    Your pal, lulu

    • Riyad Kalla July 19, 2010 at 10:23 am #

lulu I don’t know, I haven’t tested it yet. I would leave it be for fear of it re-locking your baseband.

The fix that went into .1 from what I recall was the new reception-strength calculation algorithm. So not really a show-stopper.

additional info, many sources give their suggestion to hit “Make my life easier, thanks!” to allow iPhone’s Cydia making a TSS request to save your iPhone’s ECID SHSH on Saurik’s “warehouse” which could be utilized for future releases of new jailbreak software or downgrading firmware.

but if you ignore its offered help by hitting “I hate jailbreaking. Go away.”, many found that it’s hard to get back this Cydia ECID Message (and “Make my life easier, thanks!” button) appeared again.

(ref: SiNfuL’s “Saurik Creates New Ecid Grabber Using Cydia For Easier Jailbreak” ~ http://www.sinfuliphone.com/showthread.php?t=1552

after hitting “Make my life easier, thanks!”, the TSS request will be pending at Saurik’s server. previously it took around a week to save your ECID SHSH at Saurik’s server successfully. but last night, i just waited for a moment and got the notification message “This device has SHSHs on file for iPhone OS: 4.0″ that means my ECID SHSH has been successfully saved on Saurik’s server (and Apple can never stop me from jailbreaking in any way)

            Bank,

Thank you for the additional info for folks — I just want to point out to everyone else that following these steps DOES allow Saurik’s server’s to hold information about your phone.

I’m not making a claim that it good or bad, just that if you don’t want phone-identifying information being stored on a 3rd party server, then don’t click this step.

If you don’t mind, and you enjoy the convenience, then by all means go for it.

for all you curious people out there, this jailbreak and unlock does work with iOS 4.0.1 tested my self
you basically you have to do everythig like the guide says except the part where you have to select the .ipsw in redsn0w(you have to choose the 4.0 .ipsw that you previously used, not the 4.0.1 .ipsw)
so far everything works fine except the alarm clock. For some reason i can only set it to go off once and i can`t set it for multiple days which is weird and a bit annoying.. (actually i can set it but the damn thing doesn`t go off)
    any suggestions?

    • Riyad Kalla July 20, 2010 at 4:15 pm #

      Alexander,

Really appreciate you posting the followup with the 4.0.1 information.

Did you try and use the 4.0.1 IPSW with redsn0w and it didn’t work, or you knew better and just re-used the 4.0 one when doing that step?

Got another one for you… havene seen this one yet:
2 days ago I was doing just fine with my WiFi connection, doing it all, downloads, mail, installs, you name it, I had an WiFi connection (DHCP, no need for IP) and was happy. Yesterday my tech changed the settings from DHCP to Static IP, something that with did before and worked fine. Today I came in to the office and to my surprise I couldn´t connect to my mail, so I cheched and sure enough, things where changed, so I’ve tried to manually add my IP and, this where it gets strange, it shows a connection (as per pict) http://a.imageshack.us/img34/5373/img0027j.png
but as I said before, it needs a Static IP, the thing is, I can´t find the page where I used to input the IP’s anymore. I’ve looked all over and I still can’t see it.
Any ideas…. I haven´t made any changes on the phone.

    • Riyad Kalla July 23, 2010 at 6:04 am #

      Paulo,

First, go poke that technician in the eye for me.

Second, go to Settings, right off that screen, it should be the 2nd item down “Wi-Fi”, click that, then make sure WiFi is turned on (which I know it is) and then you have to click the “>” arrow next to the hotspot you are connecting to, on that *next* screen you will see the “Static” settings tab:

      Hope that helps.

      • Paulo Santos July 23, 2010 at 6:31 am #

        Riyad

I´m way past that part, please note the following:

        Pict1: http://img830.imageshack.us/img830/58/img0027.png
Shows WiFi connectio. It connects to the Wireless Network, but it doesn´t show.

        Pict2: http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/9159/pict1.png
Again it shows that there’s a connection already, but once more there´s no name or anything else for me to change IP’s or Gateways… nothing.

        Pict3: http://img836.imageshack.us/img836/9976/pict2.png
It shows that when I click “Other Network” the only option I have is the Name and Security mode of the new Network I whant to add.

PS: I´ve done all the “Network Resettings” that I needed to do.
I hope you understand what I’m trying to say.
        Regards
        Paul

        • Riyad Kalla July 23, 2010 at 6:49 am #

          Paul,

Thanks for the pictures — The problem is that the “static” settings you need to get to, are only available once you have identified the network that you are connecting to. Are you *positive* that the tech didn’t do something else, like enable Wireless-N only on the router so your iPhone can no longer connect (it’s a Wireless-G device)?

Once you have identified that network to the iPhone and it has connected, then you can get at the Static settings to fill in.

Try rebooting your iPhone out of curiosity just incase it’s in a weird state… if that doesn’t help, disable WiFi for a min or so, then re-enable it and see if you get a connect-to prompt when the hotspot is found.

          This is weird!

          • Paulo Santos July 23, 2010 at 7:01 am #

            Riyad

Like the pictures show, I do have a connection, so It’s not the router.. the problem is that the connections are not showing on the phone at all…. except the bars on the left top of the phone.
Yes I get prompted everytime I reset the phone or start a new connection….
This as been cooking in my head for quite some time now, but as I had a good connection with the DHCP I didn´t even care…. now that I need to go Static, I don´t have a place to put my IP.
It is wierd.let me tell you..

            Thanks

            • Riyad Kalla July 23, 2010 at 7:12 am #

              Paul,

I’ve seen this issue before — I’m almost certain it’s a security setting on the router being set to something (WEP?) that the iPhone doesn’t support.

The little wireless icon on the top of the phone indicates that a wireless signal was detected and connected to, but the “Not connected” setting under the “WiFi” setting indicates that no data connection is made.

I’ve gotten into this situation in the past here at home when I’ve tried to lock down my wireless router settings with more than a simple WPA password.

You can read about other folks running into this same thing here as well.

I don’t know if the iPhone 3G, 3GS or 4 support newer network standards more effectively because of improved hardware, but the original iPhone 2G certainly doesn’t seem to.

Talk with the tech and see if that is it.

UPDATE: Here are some iPhone WIFI tips that might help getting WEP to work if that is what you guys need.

              • Paulo Santos July 23, 2010 at 7:21 am #

I’ve been talking to him…. what is wierd is that I’ve done this before. I did changes on the IP’s before and it worked fine. Now it’s like all hell broke loose…!!!! and all I whant is to have it all back..!!!

Oh well…. I´ll play with it a little bit more and see what I can do..

                Thanks

                Paul

              • Chris Hunkele July 23, 2010 at 7:25 am #

@Paulo, Are you sure you NEED to use static? DHCP (dynamic host control protocol) means that the router automagically inputs the required settings like IP, gateway, subnet. By using the static you have to manually specify all of them, and if you mess up 1 of them you wont connect. Required items:

IP adress – You need an ip address that is not currently being utilized by another device on the network, that can be very hard to guess if you have a large network. You also need to specify an IP on the correct IP schema (i.e. 192.x.x.x or 20.x.x.x)

Subnet – if you don’t have this correct you will be only talking to yourself on the network

Gatway – This is the address to the device that actually connects to the internet. have this wrong and you wont get out.

If Dynamic (DHCP) worked for you in the past why can you not stay with that? It sounds like it was working for you before.

                • Paulo Santos July 23, 2010 at 7:40 am #

                  Chris

Got all that… like I said, I´ve been doing this for sometime and I got it to work with and with out IP..
As per the need, is like everything else, the tech wants the IP’s to be Static and there´s nothing I can do about that.
But in order for me to mess up the IP I needed a place to put, wich I don´t… even when if I want to start a new connection…. it´s not there at all….
Don´t have a clue of what is going on…. I´ll try the G/N options on the router and see if that helps..

                  Thanks guys..

Hello again, I noticed that you can’t use windows 7. I am unable too upgrade windows 7, what other options do I have? I have an Iphone 3g as noted in my previous post. Thanks…

    • Chris Hunkele July 25, 2010 at 8:50 pm #

@steve I’m sorry I don’t follow.. Your saying you can use Win7 on what? Everything in this guide will also work on WinXP.

    • Riyad Kalla July 26, 2010 at 7:58 am #

      Steve,

If you meant that *you* cannot use Windows 7, that is fine. This guide (as Chris mentioned) works on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

The only part that you have to pay attention to if you are on Vista or Windows 7 is the “Run as Administrator” step for redsn0w, otherwise if you are on Windows XP, you don’t need to worry about that step.

  86. Steve July 27, 2010 at 5:42 pm #

Hello guys, sorry for the delay in responding. I have a windows seven system. And according to the instructions you shouldn’t use windows seven. I was also trying to run redsnow from the desktop? Thanks…

    • Riyad Kalla July 27, 2010 at 5:44 pm #

      Steve,

Using Windows 7 is fine — we wrote the guide on Windows 7.

Can you point me to the sentence or paragraph that made it sound like you cannot use Windows 7? I’ll fix the text so it’s not confusing.

  87. Steve July 28, 2010 at 5:55 pm #

Where it’s says windows tip,if you are using windows 7 use xp compatibility mode! Thanks again….

    • Riyad Kalla July 28, 2010 at 6:00 pm #

Ahh, I changed the language a bit to be more clear about how to access “Windows Compatibility Mode” settings in Windows Vista and 7. Just right-click on the EXE and go to properties.

  93. lulu July 30, 2010 at 9:01 pm #

ps. I currently do not have a data plan, just phone and random wi-fi.

    • Riyad Kalla August 2, 2010 at 12:30 pm #

lulu – do you have an MMS config section under the Cellular Network configuration settings?

If you go to the section named “Misc MMS Problems” and then scroll up, there are all the settings for T-Mobile US. After you have it configured, try and send *yourself* an MMS with an image attached.

Chris had to use the SSH-into-the-phone fix to get this work, I am able to send them on iPhone 3.1.2 but cannot receive them… it’s odd.

      • lulu August 5, 2010 at 8:35 pm #

Thanks. I tried everything. I think it might have to do with not having a data plan. Even though it’s a text, it’s routed through data services… that’s what I’ve read.

        • Riyad Kalla August 6, 2010 at 9:41 am #

Well shit… I didn’t realize that, it’s sort of a bummer. You might be able to get by with their cheapest BlackBerry dataplan ($20/mo) instead of doing the unlimited Android one which is $35.

I believe Chris uses the $20/mo one.

    Hey folks,

I upgraded my 3G to iOS4, but its become very slow. Although, 3G’s hardware is an issue, but will upgrading to iOS4.1 help?

Any other pointers are most welcome.

    cheers

    • Riyad Kalla August 3, 2010 at 11:24 am #

      Saurabh,

Unfortunately that is a known side-effect of running iOS 4 on the older 3G hardware. Even legit users have complained en-mass to Apple such that they are “investigating it”.

iOS 4 is a lot heavier of an OS than the previous 3.0 or even 2.0 firmwares were on the iPhone, and on that slower processor with less ram iOS 4 just kills the 3G.

If you have jailbroke the phone and enabled background tasks, you will want to disable that to get back some of the performance — that is really bad on the 3G — but if you haven’t done that, there isn’t much else to try unfortunately.

      • Saurabh Shankar August 3, 2010 at 11:28 am #

hi any idea how to disable background tasks….

        • Riyad Kalla August 3, 2010 at 11:45 am #

Unless you installed the hack to forcible enable them, they are disabled by default on the 3G because they mess up performance *so* much more.

So if you don’t recall doing this, it’s not enabled and there isn’t anything more to do.

      thanks

      • Riyad Kalla August 6, 2010 at 8:16 pm #

        Madyy,

Very valid request (especially with the performance issues iOS 4 has on the 3G). Actually what you will want to do is follow our iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware guide here:
        http://www.thebuzzmedia.com/how-to-update-iphone-2g-with-firmware-3-1-2-jailbreak-and-carrier-unlock-guide/

The guide is written for the silverback 2G iPhone’s , but the step should work pretty much the same on the iPhone 3G — when you go to download the firmware using the download service though, make sure you grab the 3G firmware and not the 2G one.

        • Riyad Kalla August 6, 2010 at 8:18 pm #

Madyy — the gist of the upgrade you will want to do will look something like:

          * Download Firmware 3.1.2 for the iPhone 3G
          * Shift-click in iTunes to apply it to your iPhone (will put it in default state, will tell you it’s locked out and all that bad stuff)
          * Run redsn0w to crack the firmware that you JUST applied.
          * Then redsn0w will take that cracked IPSW file and re-apply the changed parts to your iPhone, effectively re-jailbreaking and unlocking it.

Then you should be off to the races.

I am a bit confused right now , whether i shud go for ios4.0.1 or stick with 3.1.2 .

one question , if i upgrade it to ios4.0.1 , do i need to unlock again ???

            • Riyad Kalla August 7, 2010 at 4:12 am #

              Madyy,

That really depends on if you are using any software that requires iOS 4 or not.

If you want 4.0.1, yes you have to jailbreak and unlock again — just follow this guide end to end and you’ll be all set, we walk you through everything.

redsn0w does the Jailbreak and ultrasn0w does the unlock.

If you want 3.1.2, you can follow that other guide I provided.

      Madyy,

I’m glad you got that working. You ran into something I will need to clarify in the tutorial (you *apply* the 4.0.1 firmware, but redsn0w the 4.0.0 firmware)

Sorry for the confusion, but it all worked out in the end and you helped me find a part of the tutorial I can improve.

    Hey Riyad,

I’m currently running iOS 4 on my 3GS and wanted to share my success story. I am currently jailbroken, unlocked, and tethering from it. I used jailbreakme.com (simplest way to do it), and ultrasn0w to unlock, and Benm to tether. I hope this helps everyone. :-)

Was hoping I could get some help. I had the option before I jailbroke and unlocked my 3g iphone to send picture message via mms text. Now the option is no longer available when I go into text messaging. The camera icon is no longer there. Is there a fix available?

        Gator,

We actually have a link at the bottom of the guide to a tutorial to do just that. Here you go.

  102. Roy September 3, 2010 at 2:33 pm #

    Hi Riyad,

I find your instructions more detailed and reliable. However, you must have missed to clarify one important issue after your jailbrake instruction. Will redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 hactivate the phone after jailbrake? I am still reluctant to upgrade to 4.0.1 due to this issue, i’m afraid that my iphone 3g (3.1.2) will put me in DFU mode after jailbrake (I am using an unofficial SIM), that I may not able to unlock after jailbrake.

Another thing I noticed from your instruction is to download redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5, though the picture shown above is redsn0w 0.9.5b5-3, is there any difference between these versions?

    • Riyad Kalla September 3, 2010 at 3:39 pm #

      Hey Roy,

Great questions. I’ll try and answer them as best I can.

      1. “Will redns0w activate after JB?” — no, that is why there is an additional “Ultrasn0w” step. This is a two-part crack, you’ll notice on the redsn0w interface for this version for iOS 4, there is no longer an “Unlock” checkbox to do the Jailbreak and Unlock for you — redsn0w just does the jailbreak so you are free to install additional software using Cydia. Then when your phone restarts, you can install “ultrans0w” from the Cydia repository and finish the Unlock process so it will work on unauthorized networks.

      2. b5-3 vs b5-5 — you should be fine here, I think they forgot to change the version number in the title bar or something. But we’ve had 1000s of people run through this guide and had it work. We’ve run through it 4 or 5x ourselves.

Let me know if you have other questions!

        • Riyad Kalla September 6, 2010 at 12:13 pm #

          MA22,

I don’t know if 4.1 is supported yet, I would hold off on this until folks know more about it.

      • Roy September 28, 2010 at 6:26 am #

        Hi Riyad,

Thanks to your valuable clarification. Yes, I noticed that there was no checkbox for the hactivation on redsn0w interface, it’s the reason why I ask this question. Now it’s clear. Thanks really.

One more thing… I have upgraded my iTunes to the latest version (ver.10). Do you think this will affect the jailbrake and unlock for this guide? I noticed that there was no update yet in this guide regarding iTunes 10. Has anybody you know tried this yet?

I’m still at 3.1.2 and still tentative to upgrade due to this latest iTunes upgrade.

Hope you can give us a feedback on this.

Nice work though, thanks, I know lot’s of jailbraker benefits to your guide…. more power to you!

What is the exact file name of the firmware you downloaded to flash to your phone? It’s possible you grabbed the 3GS one on accident or something.

@meet look for a an article later today or tomorrow about “shsh blobs” from us…
You will need to to trick iTunes to let you install a firmware that is “not supported” anymore..

  106. brad September 12, 2010 at 1:29 pm #

    Hey,

I’ve unlocked/jailbroken my iphone 3g baseband 5.12.01 with redsn0w and am looking to update it to iOS 4 and jailbreak/unlock it again. For me to do this will I need to restore my phone to factory settings then follow the guide? or am i able to do it with the custom OS redsn0w made for me?

    • Riyad Kalla September 12, 2010 at 9:37 pm #

      Brad,

It depends, what firmware did redsn0w mod for you? Was it already the 4.0 firmware? If so, then sure… that’s basically step #2 of the guide anyway, after you flash the factory original firmware, you have to use redsn0w to mod that firmware, then it uploads the modded parts to your phone and jailbreaks it for you.

REMINDER: Pay close attention to the new “SHSH blob” parts of the tutorial that were added the other day, with iTunes 9.2+ it’s required that you back those things up before you continue so Apple can’t lock you out of an upgrade.

  107. lulu September 13, 2010 at 2:18 pm #

Well guys, I blew it, got cocky and messed things up. Sigh. Long story short, I am now running a 3G on 3.1.3… I downgraded from 4.0 (really bad speed issues) and now I can’t jailbreak or unlock and itunes will only let me restore to 4.1. Any thoughts other than waiting for a jailbreak/unlock for 4.1? I hate myself.

    • Chris Hunkele September 13, 2010 at 3:08 pm #

Lulu, look at the top of this guide for a new article explaining how to backup and restore with you “SHSH blobs”. That will facilitate you bypassing itunes’s restriction.

    • Riyad Kalla September 13, 2010 at 6:02 pm #

lol, lulu, in addition to what Chris said, unless you backed up your SHSH blob before you did the wipe and install, you might be SOL until the 4.1 jailbreak and unlock comes out.

The good news? Even if you are screwed, the iOS 4.1 jailbreak and unlock is forthcoming any day now, so you shouldn’t be SOL for too long.

      • lulu September 13, 2010 at 8:48 pm #

Hells bells, I did the jailbreak/unlock over a month ago… I don’t know if I SHSH’d me blob… I stored something on Cydia awhile ago when it asked me but don’t ask me how to retrieve it. Sigh. I think I have a nice iPod touch till the jailbreak unlock comes out. I’m running T-Mobile so hopefully I can get back to it some day. EVERYTHING WAS GOING SO WELL!!! Sigh.

Totally confused iPhone… running 3.1.3 but with baseband 5.13.04 talk about mixed up. Oy.

        • Riyad Kalla September 13, 2010 at 9:55 pm #

          lulu,

You might actually be fine — if you stored that blob on Cydia (it’s the only thing it asks you to store and it started asking a few months ago) then you might be fine to install 4.0.

If you start the guide at the top and work through it (again) you’ll notice some new PINK parts that refer to this new guide:
          http://www.thebuzzmedia.com/iphone-jailbreakers-unlockers-how-to-backup-your-shsh-blobs-with-tinyumbrella/

That shows you how to backup and restore your SHSH blob using TinyUmbrella, makes it dead easy. If you did store it, you can do the tutorial now. if you didn’t, then you’ll need to wait for 4.1 crack which should be soon.

          • lulu September 14, 2010 at 6:53 am #

Okay, let me get this straight, if I did “store it” do I need to use tiny umbrella to do the tutorial? And what is the process? Do I choose the 4.0 firmware .ipsw instead of 3.1.3 I’m using now? I’m missing a step in my brain, like how do I find what I stored on Cydia or will it find it automatically? Ugh. Sorry I’m such a nudge, I’m not making a connection between what I stored a month or so ago and how I access or use that… Storing my current SHSH doesn’t seem logical to me…

            • Riyad Kalla September 14, 2010 at 7:44 am #

              lulu,

If you stored your SHSH blob from your phone while it was running 4.0, you are all set. If you didn’t, then you need to wait for the 4.1 crack.

So if you DID store the 4.0 SHSH blob, then to answer your next question of “how do I get it back and do all that”… well that’s why we wrote up an entirely new guide for all that and linked it in florescent pink… it explains all that business inlined with the iOS 4.0 guide above :)

            • lulu September 14, 2010 at 7:48 am #

              Whoa.
Ok, I’ve actually been able to upgrade my firmware from 3.1.3 to 4.0 through itunes with your .ipsw. I now have a jailbroken 3G 4.0 iphone! The only problem is, when I try to run ultrasn0w through cydia, and download other packages, I get the message: ” NetDB: Open nodename nor servname provided or not known” and I can’t access anything… something to do with SHSH blobs?

              • lulu September 14, 2010 at 7:56 am #

Oh!! I ran ultrasn0w for like the 5th time and suddenly it’s working and voila, she’s done! I’m now running T-Mobile again.
                WHOOO HOOOO!!!
Well fellas, how can I thank you for running such a great site that when I wandered into the woods without my breadcrumbs what finally got me into the light was returning to your site. I owe you both a breakfast… and a bloody mary to go with it. Thanks. lulu

                • Riyad Kalla September 14, 2010 at 9:59 am #

lulu, that’s excellent! I was just checking my morning work email and saw this series of emails and went through the 5-steps of grief (or whatever it was) and finally got to acceptance when I saw your final post.

Really glad you got everything working!

  108. lulu September 14, 2010 at 10:03 am #

Novices like me couldn’t have done it without you and Chris. Other jailbreak/unlock sites just aren’t comprehensive and user-friendly enough. Keep up the good work. lu

  109. meet September 14, 2010 at 12:24 pm #

chris n riyad wat bout ma post guys m still stuck at 3.1.2 really wana upgrade plzz help …!!

    • Riyad Kalla September 14, 2010 at 9:41 pm #

Hey meet, sorry about that — I just noticed that you had posted that last question that we hadn’t replied yet.

If you are on 3.1.2, here is what you need to do:

      * Start at the top of this guide
      * Pay attention to the new PINK sections in this guide right near the top and Step 1 that tells you how to use TinyUmbrella to back up your SHSH blob on the Cydia server.
      * Once you do that, come back and continue the guide here, it will show you how to use your SHSH blob and TinyUmbrella to trick iTunes into thinking that the firmware is authorized to be used and will apply to your phone.

Now, that being said, now that 4.1 is out officially from Apple, there is a jailbreak and unlock come from the iphone-dev team soon for 4.1 that you *might* want to wait for unless you are in a big rush, then you can move to 4.0.

If you do the 4.0 upgrade be sure to back your SHSH blog again once you are done with the upgrade.

      Sam,

Want to give us some more details about your phone? What OS version are you running? Did you follow the guide above? How’d you jailbreak it? Did you do the Unlock step?

      • Marc September 17, 2010 at 3:31 am #

        I have Bootloader 6.02
        Version 4.0.2(8A400)
        Model MB702LL
        Modem Firmware 05.14.02

Used Redsn0w9.5 but my misstake was that I used Itunes and updated to 4.1

Sorry Sam Webpage screwed up. I replied to the wrong person. Forget my Reply to Riyad Kalla. I thought you asked me the question

  111. Marc September 17, 2010 at 2:36 am #

Any news on a Downgrade or Unlock for FW 05.14.02 IOS4.1? I was stupid and updated without thinking or reading first. Now I’m unable to unlock. I’ve restored all version available 3.1.2 and up now I’M JBed at 4.0.2. SHSH were saved with Cydia but I must have updated wrong. Any help or positive comments appreciated.
    Thanks

    • Chris Hunkele September 17, 2010 at 5:48 pm #

@marc check out the guide on SHSH blobs (link in pink text at top of this article) it shows you how to trick itunes to letting you install another IPSW, just follow this guide with the 4.0 IPSW and you should be good.

      • Marc September 18, 2010 at 11:25 am #

Hi Chris, thanks for the reply. I’ve tried that a few times now. I have 4 SHSH saved with Cydia. I must have done something wrong when I updated because my modem firmware won’t change back. Still stuck at 5.14.02. I’ve tried quite a few things. So I think I’m screwed in regards to an unlock. I was sitting on my brain when I updated. What I really don’t understand is when Apple sends out an Update we install it and it changes the Baseband. Did they write something in the software that doesn’t let it change when you do a different update. Maybe that is something the Dev guys are looking at. Fuzzyband seemed to have made it possible but only up to 5.8 have they stopped working on the upper basebands? Can’t seem to find any info that they are.

        • Chris Hunkele September 21, 2010 at 8:52 pm #

@Marc sorry i idnt realize you also needed an unlock, unfortunately there’s no way to downgrade the baseband right now, but hang tight the 4.1 unlock is coming soon….

          • Marc September 21, 2010 at 11:31 pm #

Thanks Chris, maybe I’ll buy another phone when I go to China. :) Should be able to get one fresh ot of the box real cheap. hahaha

          • Marc September 22, 2010 at 3:15 am #

Hey Chris who are you in the community? Are you a user or a programmer?
Me I’m a noob user but have been able to jailbreak 3.1.2 to 4.0.2 and unlock until I changed my baseband.

  112. Marc September 22, 2010 at 3:12 am #

Can anyone tell me if Fuzzyband is working on an Update to include the higher Bootloaders? 5.9 to 6.4?
Is Ultrasn0w also being working on to unlock the 5.14.02 firmware. I think these are more important than jailbreaking 4.1. So many people buy or have phone thaat are running on this firmware and I believe they would be happy to downgrade their phone so they could unlock it.
    Just a thought. :)

          Ahmed,

Sorry about the delay in replying — I was out of town, now that I’m back though I’m not sure what the error 3104 is from redsn0w so it’s hard for me to guess what might be wrong.

Did you try and google for that error and see if anyone else is having it either?

          • Chris Hunkele September 28, 2010 at 3:38 pm #

@ahmed if you do not previously have shsh blobs stored for that version, you will get this error.

@jojo While there are jailbreaks available for iOS4.1, there are no “unlocks” available yet… So ultrasn0w will not work for you yet.. Hang in there, and check back to this site.. There is an unlocks coming.. no ETA yet.

thanks can you email me as soon as you know how to make the carrier work i am working in the ship and dont have enough time to check this site from time to time. i hope it will work soon. one thing more even if i will downgrade its ios it will not work still? does the baseband stay updated even if you downgrade the ios?

will this change as well if i downgrade it
    many thanks………..

    • Chris Hunkele October 20, 2010 at 6:19 pm #

@jojo there is no carrier unlock yet for baseband 5.14, a tool came out today for Mac that will jailbreak and update to iOS4.1 while preserving and existing baseband at 5.13 (iOS4.0). But this will not help you.. Stay tuned for an announcement on the new version of Ultrasn0w.

  124. Cele November 4, 2010 at 7:27 am #

I keep “falling” off the network. One second I’m on it and the next I’m not. Does this mean I potentially screwed something up in the process of unlocking and I should try and do this again?

Essentially, I keep getting a “not connected to cellular data network” but then it comes back. I would blame it on the network in the area but its just screwy in its inconsistent on/off. For instance, our bedroom. One day it worked – the next day it was no service.

Can you just give me some sort of direction to go to fix this issue? Its a 3g Iphone running 4.0.1.

    Thanks!

    • Riyad Kalla November 4, 2010 at 8:58 am #

Cele, it’s hard to say. Is there a way for you to definitively test this by going into the city and seeing the signal continues to be retarded or if it’s possibly just spotty service at your house?

You can of course run back through the jailbreak/unlock guide to see if the 2nd time it behaves better, that won’t hurt anything.

  125. Cele November 4, 2010 at 9:18 am #

    Riyad -

I was in downtown yesterday afternoon and had similar issues but not as many. We live about 15 minutes from downtown still within the realm of civilization, so I’m not sure what’s going on.

Weird thing is my daughter goes to preschool way out of the city limits and I got more bars there then I got in downtown. Still – the weird falling off the network thing happened driving into carpool (seriously, no service to four bars by moving an inch in a carpool lane?!)

Do i have to do a restore via itunes before trying this again? Or just follow the steps again explicitly?

    Thanks.

I have jailbroken, and unlocked my Iphone 3g for Tmobile. And everything works, except I lost all of my contacts. On my tmobile phone they were ALL saved on my SIM card, do you have any idea of how to retrieve those to the Iphone?

    • Riyad Kalla November 9, 2010 at 7:36 pm #

tiffu21, go to Settings > Mail, Contact and Calendars, then scroll to the bottom, there is a button “Import SIM Contacts” you can press to re-import them all.

  128. Jessica November 24, 2010 at 7:16 pm #

    Hi… I have a jailbraked & unlocked 3gs iphone (3.1.3 – 05.12.01) I’m using another SIM.

If I upgrade to IOS 4… Is there a way to unlock the iphone so I can use it with any SIM??

    Thanks

    • Riyad Kalla December 1, 2010 at 10:08 pm #

Jessica, the later part of the guide walks you through unlocking the phone to work with other GSM networks and SIM cards.

      • Jessica January 19, 2011 at 4:58 pm #

Ive been doing some reading and I found out I can’t upgrade to 4.1 with pwnagetool (not upgrading baseband) because I dont have the SHSH saved.. When I open Cydia, it says: SHSH IOS 4,2,1…

So I figured I can only upgrade to 4.2.1… but I am concerned about loosing my unlock… And I am a little confused about “HOW” to do the upgrade, should I make a custom firmware and use pwnagetool?

        Thanks!!

        • Riyad Kalla January 21, 2011 at 9:00 am #

Jessica, I am sorry I can’t help here. Haven’t done the 4+ upgrade on the iPhone myself yet and don’t know the ins and outs enough to provide good guidance (I might walk you right off a cliff :)

  129. Murtaza November 25, 2010 at 3:12 am #

Thanks. I installed itunes 10 and had to go back to 9.2 to get it working. Also had to copy redsnow on the c drive before it picked up the firmware.

  130. Sly January 10, 2011 at 10:43 pm #

    Hi,

I was wondering if its possible that I could upgrade from 3.1.3 to 4.0-4.1? I have been told it wasn’t a good idea to upgrade from my current firmware to a 4.0 unless its deeply studied and ready to rock and roll. I haven’t heard anything from a gent that has helped me with my iPhone. I have had this iPhone for about 5 to 6 months now.

Plus, is it really needed to upgrade? For any reason?

I am currently on T-Mobile and I have an iPhone 3GS.

    Let me know :)

    Thanks,
    Sly

    • Riyad Kalla January 11, 2011 at 9:21 am #

      Sly,

I haven’t been keeping my ear to the firmware-ground so I’m not sure if the upgrade is feasible. I would just trust whatever the folks over at iphone-dev say.

As for the “do I need to upgrade” question, the only reason you should ever need to upgrade is:
      - particular bug you want fixed is fixed in a newer release
      - you want to run software that needs a newer iOS version

If neither of those apply and you are just fine/happy with your phone, then just keep 3.1.3 on it and you should be good. All I never noticed with upgrading and every day use on my 2G iPhone was that it gradually got slower as I went from 1.x, to 2.x to 3.x iOS versions. Except for a few games that wanted the newer iOS versions, I didn’t get any better *experience* out of my phone for basic use; but I’m not the most advanced phone users really.

    Hi Riyad,

rather impressive knowledge, i must say.

I have a 3g model running on 4.0.2 which i jail broke using Redsnow. Now to unlock i believe you have to run Cydia for which you need wifi, which unfortunately i don’t have. Can you pls advise me ( step by step ) how tounlock. I have a desktop having internet connection. Thanks/Bien

    • Riyad Kalla January 21, 2011 at 9:02 am #

bien — how come you don’t have WiFi? You need a data connection to install the unlock package via Cydia, without it, you cannot unlock.

    hey guys
A novice (I’m not much more than a novice, I’ve successfully cracked a 2G and 3G for T-Mobile, that’s all) just handed me an older 3gs running 4.2.1 who uses T-Mobile
Can I jailbreak and unlock it?
Looks like I have two possible options:
Use Pawnage 4.1.3 to upgrade the baseband to 6.15 and then use Ultrasn0w to unlock
(did some initial work on this one, PawnageTool would not recognize the 4.2.1 firmware, only 4.1)
    or
WAIT for the DevTeam full release of PawnageTool for 4.2.1 after beta bugs worked out.
    Thoughts?

Guys, some seriously good news — an untethered unlock (like jailbreak.me) is being worked on for iOS 4.2.1 and all the Apple iOS devices out there.

In plain English: Soon there should be an unlock/jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 that you can apply to your device by simply visiting a webpage or some equally simple mechanism.

Is it weird that I just followed Step one of this guide and didnt have to follow Step two but my nonsupported carrier works? Ive tested calling and receiving and everything seems fine.

  137. Jk February 21, 2011 at 9:48 pm #

And am I supposed to use the Restore from backup option in iTunes after this whole process?

    • Riyad Kalla February 22, 2011 at 3:39 pm #

JK, I don’t think you need to as the update doesn’t touch the data partition, but if you are missing some stuff (media, texts, etc.) you can restore to get that stuff back.

I just unlocked my iphone 3g with 4.2.1 firmware and when I unlocked it using ultrasnow it doesn’t detect the sim card it just says searching the entire time. Ive tried rejailbreaking it, turning on airplane mode off and on, reinstalling the ultrasnow, and rebotting the iphone but still doesn’t work is their anyway I can fix this????

    • Russ March 16, 2011 at 2:57 pm #

I’m having the same issue. iphone 3g 4.2.1 with base band of 5.15.04. Jailbreak worked like a charm. Cydia is installed. Installed Ultrasn0w. Carrier says Carrier 9. I installed my T-Mobile SIM and it just keeps searching for service. I’ve done the airplane mode thing about 50 times, but nothing changes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks,

      Russ

      • Chris Hunkele March 16, 2011 at 9:36 pm #

@Russ, unfortunately there currently is *no* unlock for 4.2.1 on BB 5.15.04. That’s why this guide specifies iOS 4.0.
However, there is a workaround. You can take an iPad firmware and upgrade your baseband to 6.15.0, and then you can unlock 4.2.1 on the 3G. BUT, once you do this you will *never* be able to install a factory IPSW firmware, downgrade, you are permanently locked to this version.
It is for this reason we have decided not continue this guide past 4.0/4.0.1
        So you have 2 decisions:
        1. downgrade your OS back to 4.0 (there are guides on the interwebs)
        2. keep 4.2.1, upgrade your baseband and thats what you have until the phone dies. (guides are also out there)
Sorry for the bad news and good luck.

  139. Russ March 17, 2011 at 11:05 am #

Thanks for the reply. I downgraded to 4.0 /4.01 with the ipsw listed about. I was able to used it, but the OS on the phone is very choppy and flickers now whenever you change screens. I didn’t enable multi tasking because I read that it slows the system down, so I know that isn’t my issue. Any thoughts?

    Thanks again,

    Russ

    • Chris Hunkele March 17, 2011 at 7:34 pm #

@Russ, glad to hear you were able to downgrade, sorry to hear about the choppy bit… I run iOS4 on a 3G myself cracked for tmobile, and know that its pretty sluggish, some day i want to drop kick it to the street. But if the screen flickers you might want to try a new fresh install and see if that fixes it, other than that I have no tips for the fix, ive just never heard of it. :( keep us posted if you find something!

Ok so I have a Iphone 3g 16gb 4.2.1 with a 5.15.04 modem firmware and a 5.09 bootloader I have jailbroken and unlocked it using redsn0w and then adding ultrasn0w to cydia it now recognizes a Carrier which it did not do that before but I still have no service…… When I go to about it says not available in the network slot but in the carrier spot it says carrier 9.0 which before it also had not available…. Under general-carriers I tried to search for tmobile as a carrier and it say now carrier can be found….. I have 3g disabled Cellular data on and data roaming on….. I am pretty sure I have read everything there is to read and tried everything I can think of am I just missing something?

    Hey guys,
    Couple years ago you helped me unlock/jailbreak a 3G, 4.0, baseband 5.13.04

Question: How can I erase EVERYTHING and keep my jailbreak/unlock so as to give it to a friend? “Restore” through itunes makes me nervous as they of course want to update iOS and firmware?

    Thoughts? Admonitions? Scoldings? Ideas?

    • lulu January 3, 2012 at 6:38 pm #

No worries. re-jailbroke and unlocked it, restored as a new phone and voila, she-is-a-wiped-clean.

      • Riyad Kalla January 4, 2012 at 10:14 am #

Doh, I should have kept reading. Glad it worked!

    • Riyad Kalla January 4, 2012 at 10:13 am #

lulu — under Settings > General isn’t there a “Erase all Data” button? I swear I’ve used it in the past before selling iOS devices.
