Marc Chung sends in a very interesting tidbit of information covering Arizona bill HCR 2034: “abolish federal government; state sovereignty”.
More specifically the bill covers the situation in which the US government declares martial law then Arizona will join with 34 or more (majority) of states and declare their own independence from the Union… interesting (especially with election time around the corner and conspiracies about that Bush/Cheney empire would do something in order to declare martial law to avoid the election):
1. That when or if the President of the United States, the Congress of
the United States or any other federal agent or agency declares the
Constitution of the United States to be suspended or abolished, if the
President or any other federal entity attempts to institute martial
law or its equivalent without an official declaration in one or more
of the states without the consent of that state or if any federal
order attempts to make it unlawful for individual Americans to own
firearms or to confiscate firearms, the State of Arizona, when joined
by thirty-four of the other fifty states, declares as follows:that the states resume all state powers delegated by the Constitution
of the United States and assume total sovereignty; that the states
re-ratify and re-establish the present Constitution of the United
States as the charter for the formation of a new federal government,
to be followed by the election of a new Congress and President and the
reorganization of a new judiciary, similarly following the precedent
and procedures of the founding fathers; that individual members of the
military return to their respective states and report to the Governor
until a new President is elected; that each state assume a negotiated,
prorated share of the national debt; that all land within the borders
of a state belongs to the state until sold or ceded to the central
government by the state’s Legislature and Governor; and that once
thirty-five states have agreed to form a new government, each of the
remaining fifteen be permitted to join the new confederation on
application.
Interesting. I find it key that they will join with the other states, and it would not be a unilateral move. Almost an all-or-none proposition.
But, isn’t it interesting in what high regard we hold the Constitution… that if the United States declares martial law for some reason, states would secede and keep the original rather than charter a new constitution.
Not exactly a Confederacy kind of thing – more like a bold move to keep the status quo.
Any Governor that does NOT join in with Arizona, or any other state that does right thing by seceding, should be immediately impeached.
The american people need to wake up and smell the coffee before they lose what’s left of their once beautiful country.

Well, I would say that if Arizona seceded, it wouldn’t be self sufficient. We would have to annex the Mexican states of Sonora and Sinaloa. That way we would be able to produce all our food, and have ports. It would be a very strong nations. Because there is a lot of oil in Sonora and Sinaloa.
That 34 state thing is baloney.. we don’t need other states.. We need Sonora and Sinaloa.

I say two things in this post: First, physical violent resistence is both pointless and futile because you are outgunned, have no leadership, have no organization, and no political support from the masses. I find this to be of great interest as I don’t believe our great governor Janet Napolitano has the backbone to do this. You have to remember…she one of the first ones to jump on the Real-ID act. To me, that showed no thought whatsoever. Now, what will Arizona do when Obama gets elected and eliminates the rights of gun owners? My guess is, Arizona buckles. It is this or more Bush(McBrain) and we get the same result. Why is it that the American public never has a decent choice when it comes to presidential elections?

I have seen a lot of talk about the “… when Obama gets elected and eliminates the rights of gun owners” so I went and looked up what his stance was, and it seems to be that “he would bring back the semi-automatic assault gun bans and wants national legislation against carrying concealed firearms”.
Doesn’t seem too rediculous, does it? If it’s more extreme then that, do you have a link to a clarification that I might have missed?
As far as Real-ID act, I never saw glowing reviews of that act, but I could see how a gov in a state like AZ that has such a huge illegal immigrant problem could be convinced to hop on that bandwagon thinking it would somehow solve the problem.
I also know that Napolitano asked for $100+ million plus for our border protection/control from the govt… my guess is that this is a little bit of “if you vote for MY thing, I’ll vote for YOUR thing” going on. She votes for RealID and gets her $100 million for border protection and job-creation.
Who knows how this stuff really works, god knows no one is honest about it =/

SP, had a few folks email us about this as well. From the way the Bill is worded, it sounds like Arizona would secede if a majority of other states did as well.
Paul the Cab Driver has a good point, the reality of AZ trying to secede on it’s own is ridiculous. The US govt wouldn’t allow it to happen and let’s say hypothetically if we did, it would be disastrous to our state. We couldn’t sustain ourselves.
But if a majority of states, 34 in the case of the bill, also agreed to protest the martial law declaration, Arizona would join them… atleast that’s how I interpret it. I’m sure you could find the other states willing to do the same by checking out their additional bills, I just don’t happen to know what they are. I also can’t see a case where having half the union secede would be a good thing. This country is so powerful and our states so prosperous because we are all united.
I honestly cannot see something happening that is so epically bad this election that we need to worry about this… if something happens that’s bad enough for a state to secede, I imagine there will be such an uproar in other facets of the country regarding the said issue, that seceding wouldn’t be Priority #1 on anyone’s list.
The good news, and reality of a capitalist system like ours, is that the powers-that-be (regardless of your political affiliation, you have to agree that govt doesn’t exist in a vacuum and answers to a higher financial god) would do everything they could to stop a scared population from running home and boarding up the windows and *not* spending money. This country funds so many other countries, companies and markets directly or indirectly through our uncontrollable spending that to have us all scared out of our minds in a military state with tanks in the street is the last thing anyone wants… we’d stop buying anything and everyone, around the world, would feel it.
So in a perverse way, our bad habits of spending more than we should, I think actually protects this country from having anything really awful happening to it. Countries will jump to our aid to make sure our economy doesn’t collapse, and political decisions would be made around protecting our economic interests.
If this was a 3rd world country who had very little disposable income, the govt would throw tanks in the street at the whisper for a succession because it wouldn’t cost them anything to do it… everyone would stop talking about it and *bam* problem solved.

I find this interesting considering Obama might declare Martial Law after the people figure out that he is devaluing our currency so when our economy collapses so does our monetary system.

seceding from the union is the responsibility of each state when an out of control federal government continues in acts of treasonous behavior through the tyrannical executive orders of chaotic negligence. the freedoms sought, fought and won by the forefathers of this nation are for all americans and the 100 million plus gun-owners strong will see to it that the lives of all american soldiers lives lost were not lost in vain. the federal government is born of the states and can be killed just as easily. we are the parents and you are the child.
I just read this only because I was looking for material to help me write a short story I am writing where the country does fall into a situation such as this. After reading Paul the Cab Driver’s post though, I feel insulted. I am a soldier in the US Army, and better yet I am an M1A2 Abrams gunner. Been a tanker going on 6 years now. And guess what Paulie, I didn’t swear an oath to the President, I swore an oath to defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States. To defend against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Every soldier takes this oath. Our oath is NOT to the government, it is to the Constitution and the people. The government is a tool that is supposed to be used and managed by the people, but the public servants *politicians as they like to be called* usurped power from the people and continue to usurp power. I would never side with the government if a secession anywhere happened. You want guns, no problem. Citizens have guns already, and chances are most soldiers would go home and fight for their home state rather than the central corrupt-erment. I would return to AZ, yea I am an AZ citizen *Marana what what, Moo town* and I would lay my allegiance to the people who chose to secede.

I live in California where the recession is hitting the hardest. If I had money I would move to Texas and buy land where there is hunting and water and land available to provide for my family on our own. And Texas will secede first. They have everything they need to exist on their own plus a lot of US military bases that they would take over. It would be a case of other states joining Texas I am sure.
And this is going to happen.
Any state that seceded would plunge itself into abject poverty — there would be no way any state would (or could) ever secede for a few reasons.
The powers that be that could even order such a thing are the same people that work in Washington half the year and pow-wow on different committees with one-another. Besides that the effort at a public-level could be completely undone with the correct level of propaganda and crowd-management tactics (Nazi-inhabited Poland is a fascinating read of the slow-churn psychology used for such a thing — like boiling a frog slowly — note, before you freak out I’m not comparing US to Nazi Poland, just saying the psychology behind what happened in Poland during that time is incredible)… and more than anything, imagine what a successful secession would look like to the rest of the world? What message it would send strategically to all our enemies (and allies) — “The US can’t keep it’s shit together”
That reason alone — “National Security” — is the reason a secession would never be allowed to happen… ever. Either the local government and law enforcement would be re-appropriated to stop it or a national unit would come into “regain control”.
I can appreciate the fantasy of thinking “When the time comes, we would do what’s right” — and you are right, YOU might do what’s right, but the political machine will keep the US intact no matter what.
