Gears of War PC Problems

Gears of War PC

IGN’s Gears of War for the PC review reveal a few interesting tid-bits… namely fuck you Microsoft *cough*, sorry I mean, namely that Microsoft has gotten EPIC to require an Windows Live Gold account ($50/year) for full multiplayer functionality, including online co-op play. So if you just sank $60 on this game and want to play it, don’t worry, you get to pay another $50 before you can play co-op with your friends.

Was there any technical limitation or reason to do this? God no, no other Windows Live game does, but Microsoft needs to take its new trick-pony and shove it down your throat and incentify you to actually pay for their bullshit. The same bullshit Sony is giving away for free.

Another tid-bit is the performance problems even on a 768MB 8800 GTX and a quad-core CPU the team encountered:

Then there’s the question of performance. Gears is still a gorgeous game, but in both DX9 and DX10 we noticed it would stutter on a regular basis. Things would run smoothly otherwise, but the regular occurrences of dropped frames were distracting. As for our system, we’re running 32-bit Vista on a rig with an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU 2.40GHz, a 768 MB GeForce 8800 GTX, and 2 GB of high-end RAM. Granted, that’s not exactly the best kind of rig to determine a game’s performance, but that’s all we’ve tried it on so far.

Update #1: Apparently the launch of Gears of War for Windows has been a shit-storm of problems. A lot of the multiplayer problems stem around issues with Windows Live online multiplayer and also the game shipped with quite a few bugs out of the box it looks like.

Update #2: For the folks running into problems with Gears of War for the PC (which seems to be… everyone) there is some hope. The official Gears forum has a thread for you with all the common problems and fixes for those problems.

Update #3: Andrew Burns over at VE3D just ripped GoW PC a new asshole, running into both the immediate “crash to desktop” bug, that is only fixed by the video drivers no longer available for download from NVIDIA and affected by the “shitty multiplayer”:

… though Gears of Windows crashes to desktop a few seconds after leaving the prison cell on the first level. Looking on the Gears boards I see sweet FA in the way of help or fixes from Epic or MS, other than the usual, “lolz, make sure you installed the drivers mentioned in the readme that aren’t available for download from Nvidia anymore.” Strangely, I played Act 5 and that worked perfectly, so if someone has a checkpoint save from the first level please send it in so I can actually use the game I paid for. Oh, and don’t even get me started on the shitty multiplayer component.

God this pisses me off. I’m not going to pay for something I get for free with other games.

    • Anonymous March 30, 2010 at 1:22 pm #

I have an AMD Phenom II quad core 3.2 ghz, 2 gb DD3 ram, Geforce 8600 GS 512 mb and Windows XP. Installed the game, and patch, and all I get when I launch it is the music plus a blank screen. Yes my gfx card could be better, but it’s still a better card than the minimum requirement. Am I missing something here, or have Microsoft deliberately sabotaged the pc version of Gears in order to manipulate people into buying a 360 instead?

      • Riyad Kalla April 27, 2010 at 9:44 am #

Charlie, how do you like that Quad-Core Phenom? I was looking at that chip recently… it’s incredibly affordable with some nice performance numbers.

  2. Riyad Kalla November 3, 2007 at 10:04 am #

Bird, you should WANT to pay… because it builds character…
    :(

You know developers actually have a semi working versions of their games months before they are “released” so they can give a beta to a online gaming site for a test drive it. Never mind the fact that people who preorder games get them 1-2-4 days before actual release.

  6. adrian97c November 10, 2007 at 12:05 am #

the game wont even install properly!! i have new system built also… I CANT GET A REFUND!!

  7. Riyad Kalla November 10, 2007 at 7:58 am #

    adrian97c,
Where does the game fail during installation? Have you tried searching online for workarounds?

  8. MrR November 11, 2007 at 3:55 am #

    This is a disgrace.
Install too long and badly executed.
The Server issue that is stopping people playing the game.
I really am shocked at the poor testing that this game has obviously gone through. Either that, or they released the wrong version to the public.

  9. Riyad Kalla November 11, 2007 at 8:39 am #

    MrR,
I haven’t heard about the online play problems, what is that all about?

I figured you connected to the Microsoft Live servers to do matching and such, is that not the case?

God, for a game that has been out in “testing” for over a year on XBoxs with plenty of data to farm for QA, I’m surprised this has been such a rocky launch for Epic/MS

  10. MrR November 11, 2007 at 1:20 pm #

    Sorry dude, incorrect info…..

    I was referring to http://www.megagames.com/news/html/pc/microsoftadmitsgearsofwarpcsmallproblem.shtml
    as the online malarky!!!

Just done a complete reinstall…..as I has live already installed I thought I may have got it working….NOT.

Actually had a windoz blue screen of death whilst in a server room!!!!

  11. Riyad Kalla November 11, 2007 at 1:37 pm #

MrR thanks for the heads up… that really sucks.

I wonder why this releease has gone so terribly.

Let us know how the game is if you het to play ;)

  12. Riyad Kalla November 11, 2007 at 5:45 pm #

MrR and others, the official “help” thread is here, give it a look and see if it helps you out.

Epic Games are the dirty slaves of Microsoft. To sell a heavenly awaited title like this in that state is a shame. This piece of crap is a early pre-alpha :-P . I haven’t expected such a ripp-off from these poor f**’s @ M$ & Epic. As a reward for this ignorance zillions of pissed-off users are flooding their forums.

This is another proof for the lowest-level and the lack of intelligence of the M$-employees…

Is there a workaround to be able to save the single player game without this Windows Live fluff? I don’t even care about multiplayer, can’t even save my single player game which is why I bought it. :D

Figures I’d have to look around for something simple like saving my game, after getting a great looking game to run 30-40fps on a $40 video card.

  16. Riyad Kalla November 21, 2007 at 9:32 am #

    Hah, nice nick name.

I’m not sure if the game will run without creating a windows live account… I’m pretty sure Microsoft is using Gears of War to force Games for Windows down our throats, so my guess is no.

How did you get the game running so smooth on a $40 video card? What video card?

  17. I hope Bill Gates wakes up mildly warm November 24, 2007 at 7:29 am #

sorry was kinda pissed, I get so sick of bloatware being the biggest hassle in the world when I want to play a game nowadays, seems like everyone has to spend hours messing with it before they can even play, they NEVER work as intended. I actually like giving companies their money for great games, but if they’re going to piss customers off with these stupid interfaces just to combat piracy or keep their sheep in a nice neat little fenced in area I”m just going to start downloading them free, bet I could find game cracks easier than getting a damn forum moderator to answer a question lol

Figured it out though, if anyone else needs: Just make a single player profile, block GoW with your firewall, or don’t connect to the internet when you do. The pain in the ass is it’ll delete your save game when you accidentally sign onto Live, I could’ve sworn I didn’t though and it just did it out of nowhere, multiple times. To get around that, you just gotta take 1 file out of the Gears of War folder so it doesn’t eat it, it’s

    C:\Documents and Settings\asdf\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\XLive\Content\E00006BEE780104D\FFFE07D10010000\E00006BEE780104D_MountPt\4D530842.gpd

Hope it helps, to be safe alt tab out of GoW when you’re done playing, backup the file, then shut down the game for the day

  18. I hope Bill Gates wakes up mildly warm November 24, 2007 at 7:30 am #

Oops, link too long, the filename is 4D530842.gpd, just 1 file.

  19. Riyad Kalla November 24, 2007 at 7:46 am #

For the folks that need the whole path, it looks like this (with line breaks before each \)

    Content
    \E00006BEE780104D
    \FFFE07D10010000
    \E00006BEE780104D_MountPt
    \4D530842.gpd

Also, Bill Gates, that was really cool of you to post your fix for others, god knows other people are running into this problem. Thanks for following up!

  20. I hope Bill Gates wakes up mildly warm November 24, 2007 at 7:47 am #

oh, it’s a GeForce 7300GS. I actually played Bioshock on it, that was a nightmare. That’s why I love this game so much, it looks just as good in most parts IMO and runs about 10 times better. I just turned off a few dynamic shadow and light/specular options, turned off motion blur(which I actually liked unlike most people, looks cool)etc., There’s 2 major things you can turn off, but they mess up some textures, not terribly, but they’re not exactly pretty. Basically anything that has heavy shadows on it will become a about 50% darker it looks like, like Marcus’ jail door at the beginning of the game will be completely black. Check out the Unreal Tournament 3 Tweak Guide on google for the rest of the commands, almost all of them work in GoW that I’ve tried so far, around 10-15 of them. If you try these and can’t get GoW to stop over writing the .ini files, just make them Read Only after you’re done configuring them, or deny rights.

    “FloatingPointRenderTargets=True
This setting enables or disables Floating Point Render Target technology, which is used to provide certain post processing effects, such as the ability to enable HDR and Anti-Aliasing at the same time. The main impact of setting this option to False is that it alters the appearance of the game, removing certain post processing effects. It provides a slightly different appearance to any other option, and some may like it, however there will be some minor visual glitches, such as light boxes around explosions.”
    and

    “DirectionalLightmaps=True

This technique allows for improved image quality, as surfaces will have additional depth, bump and detailing. Setting this option to False can increase performance but reduce image quality by making surfaces appear flatter.”

I had to turn that 2nd one back on, got really ugly.

  21. Riyad Kalla November 24, 2007 at 8:04 am #

    Hot-damn, great tips!

I’ve only got a ATI X1400 in my Laptop right now, and my XBox red-ringed but it sounds like I might be able to get GoW PC up and running on my laptop with some these tweaks.

Also got a few friends that thought they were up a creek without a paddle for playing GoW PC because they had lower end machines, but I’m forwarding your post to them.

    Thanks again man.

  22. I hope Bill Gates wakes up mildly warm November 24, 2007 at 8:16 am #

no prob, just realize that my game does not look like the picture on the top of this page lol i wish. And I’m playing it on 1024×768, some people dread going that low but it doesn’t bother me. still pretty good results for 25-30 FPS on such a nice looking game on dated hardware, that tweakguide site has helped me play like 5 games this year I probably would’ve given up on lol

  23. Cliche Guevara November 26, 2007 at 12:39 am #

Any in game bugs? Or you just mean the installing bugs etc? I’m past those, what’s pissing me off is tweaking the INI’s and actually getting them to save correctly or not be overwritten, and having to use the 4D530842.gpd save game copy option. Though the save game fix functions well enough for me, the tweaking and resetting INI’s seems really random to me, I don’t see a pattern what causes it, anyone else?

  24. Riyad Kalla November 26, 2007 at 7:15 am #

    Cliche,
I thought these issues were temporary with the initial release of Gears and eventually fixed by a patch… are you guys saying that these problems *still* exist and there is nothing to do but fuck around with the game files until it works?

  25. nevermore November 30, 2007 at 11:17 pm #

    I need some help guys…

I was using Vista and I downgraded to XP. Before doing that…i saved my XLive folder..which had every save checkpoint file etc etc. I thought just copy pasting it again when I installed Gears of War on XP would let me play the game where I left it. But it doesnt work. It did recognize my profile but it simply said that ‘no checkpoints have been saved.’ Im on ACT 5..and dont wana play it all over again unless theres no other option. Any suggestions?

  26. Cliche Guevara December 1, 2007 at 2:54 pm #

beats me man, I didn’t know they released a patch haha. guess i’ll go check it out now

  27. Mcfazza December 3, 2007 at 2:18 pm #

I’ve been on the official forum for this game for a few weeks now and can confirm that there has been no patch issued for GoW. There has been a patch for windows live, but all the gameplay issues and the missing saves issue remain unresolved.

  28. mcfazza December 3, 2007 at 2:20 pm #

And nevermore, don’t worry – the pc version lets you start from the beginning of act 5 even with no saves. Choose ‘start campaign from previous checkpoint’ or whatever from the continue campaign menu.

    Sorry about the double posts.

  29. Riyad Kalla December 3, 2007 at 2:21 pm #

    Mcfazza,
What is the tone of the GoW forums? I’m sort of amazed that EPIC/MS can release one of the biggest games of the year with totally busted functionality, and more than a month after the fact still have no fix for it.

Does it not effect that many people, or are people foaming at the mouth and Epic/MS just isn’t responding?

  30. Peter December 8, 2007 at 2:10 pm #

Hi…i’ve got a problem…some of the buttones in Gears of War dont work…when i enter to options i can’t go back to main menu and the worst is that i can’t creat a profile…so i can’t save my progres neither play a multiplayer…I already reinstalled the game thinking it was an error while installing the game but it wasn’t…could this be a problem of the dvd’s…

  31. Rene December 9, 2007 at 8:15 am #

    Hi,
I too cant save the game and I also cant get the controll settings to stay the way i designed them…after I configured the keys the controlls are all screwed up and nothing is working the way it should. Moving the mouse makes me jump hitting wasd keys are switched with other functions…????
I also cant create a players profile and I am completly disconnected…
help would be very much appreciated

  32. Cliche Guevara December 11, 2007 at 8:55 pm #

Ok, looks like the patch actually stopped my stuttering. I bumped up the resolution to 1024, it’s laggy as hell, but oddly no stuttering at all at least, so that’s a plus. I thought it had fixed the save game issue, but it appears that it can still be corrupted depending on my online status when I launch the game. It will save to 2 different profiles depending on online or offline.

Just figured I’d post in case no one bothered to download the patch, I’m sure most people have tried it already though considering the sad state of the game heh

I do actually have a file that a player made themself that nukes windows LIVE completely and just lets you use offline profiles, I didn’t try it because I was on chapter 5 anyway, I can warp there whenever regardless of save game. You may be wary to download it, but realize Epic would’ve nuked it from their forums if it was a virus etc. here’s the link:

    http://gearsforums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=585332

  33. Cliche Guevara December 11, 2007 at 9:00 pm #

Also, as the thread says, you can’t use the .zip file fix and official patch together. At least from what I saw, I tried it and the zip file .exe will not let the game run, though I didn’t try to mess around to get it to work at all.

  34. Riyad Kalla December 11, 2007 at 9:02 pm #

    Cliche,
Thanks for following up for folks that are totally borked.

Out of curiosity if you go the route with nuking Windows LIVE, can you re-enable it later, or is the online component of the game farked until you reinstall?

  35. Milos December 17, 2007 at 3:11 pm #

    How I continue campain.

  36. Cliche Guevara December 19, 2007 at 2:05 pm #

nah you can backup the directories then just overwrite later:

    C:\Documents and Settings\asdf\My Documents\My Games\Gears of War for Windows\Binaries

    C:\Documents and Settings\asdf\My Documents\My Games\Gears of War for Windows\Wargame

Apparently you can still “play online over Hamachi or any other VPN.”, but I don’t play online period so I don’t know what that means. :D

  37. Cliche Guevara December 19, 2007 at 2:06 pm #

“asdf” in the directories is my username, replace with yours

  38. manny December 25, 2007 at 10:13 am #

    fuck “games for windows”
epic was a great company but now is sucking ass.

it’s one of the few companies that makes games for other platforms (linux, mac, etc) but now is being forced by the assholes at m$.

“namely that Microsoft has gotten EPIC to require an Windows Live Gold account ($50/year) for full multiplayer functionality”

    give me a break microwhores!

I hope epic becomes the company it used to…

  39. Berserk@#*& December 26, 2007 at 1:58 am #

God, i dont know who to blame…….
i cant create create a profile so i cant save and if i go into the video settings or audio settings, I CANT EXIT! if i want to see any controls, they’re all unbound, surprisingly, even though i was firing at locusts using default controls just seconds before, and i cant leave the controller menu until i bind them all , and after if i move the mouse right fenix RUNS FORWARD!!!! WTF is going on here! i tried ever known game fix, installed patch even used an hamaichi fix!

only thing i haven’t is to kick my comp, which im getting very tempted to do…

Still haven’t found a solution for my mouse: if i move my mouse right or left then the character moves forward and backward

  41. Riyad Kalla January 2, 2008 at 12:57 pm #

    Henky,
Thanks for posting the links for folks. GoW PC is just straight fucking the people that bought it… I’m still baffled by this.

Also, what mouse do you have? Have you tried different drivers? Maybe uninstall custom drivers (e.g. Logitech) and let the default MS Mouse driver load and see if the issue is resolved?

  42. henky January 2, 2008 at 1:04 pm #

    that was fast!!

nope its not my mouse or drivers i’ve tried that,
it’s gotta have something to do with the game itself!
I’ve googled for a solution but i can’t seem to find anyone with the same problem that was able to fix it!

  43. asdf January 2, 2008 at 1:55 pm #

  45. Suburban January 19, 2008 at 11:29 pm #

I bought GOW recently, finished the single player and decided to play multiplayer but it doesnt work:(

when i go into player profiles, click on sign in with another account (i did single playre on off line account), it comes up with a message telling me that an update needs to be installed or live will close. I click update, and the blue bar stops allmost at the end of the download bar, then stops. Ive waited for at least 10 mins, and nothing happens. It just keeps giving me the message that it is updating and not to clost down the game.

    can anyone help me?

    BTW im running vista 32bit

  46. Riyad Kalla January 20, 2008 at 8:28 am #

    Suburban,
I don’t know if this will help, but have you tried running GoW as Administrator? You right-click on the Start Menu shortcut, and go down to “Run as Administrator”, then try and apply the update.

There are new permission models in Vista and I wonder if it’s stopping it from apply the patch after it’s downloaded it.

  47. JoePissed January 25, 2008 at 2:54 pm #

Have tried to install on two high end rigs. Both blow out the required specs…both crash and die with Visual C error..have tried everything….F********** MS and Epic.

  48. mark January 30, 2008 at 5:05 am #

I returned the GOW to the store and they refunded the $85 Australian dollars I paid for this game that wouldnt work on my latest 1 year old Asus notepad running XP PRO and a ATI RADEON X1700.I told the store the game was faulty, which it certainly was and hearing everybody else who has purchased pc version has similar or the same problems. .It also wouldnt play on my HP desktop pc with a Geforce 7600gt Graphics card. Im not buying Microsoft anymore if I can help it. NOT GOOD ENOUGH MICROSOFT!!!!

  49. suburban February 1, 2008 at 1:36 am #

How do i run gears of war as admin? i cant right-click and select run as admin in the games folder, and i for somereason i dont see a gearsofwar.exe file? wat file should i make a shortcut for to be able to run as admin?

  50. Riyad Kalla February 1, 2008 at 8:09 am #

    Suburban,
On Windows Vista, when the game installs, and creates a shortcut, you can right-click on that program shortcut and go down to the 3rd or so menu item, it’s usually “Run as Administrator”.

If you are on Windows XP you won’t see that option.

  51. Hector.T March 4, 2008 at 8:09 am #

lol, honestly fuck the game,i’m lucky i just borrowed it,i played the damn game in 360 with a friend of mine and course it’ll work flawlessly on the console, but on my fuckin pc once i use full screen it keeps fuckin crashin back to windows.runtime error sort of shit,so i had to play it windowed mode which pisses me off cause whats the point when i’m actually using a 16 inch monitor.COD4 is damn better i can say,i have one reserved for me by deposit and i cant wait to play that

  52. nigel March 10, 2008 at 2:54 pm #

Still not working, months after release. Fails “out the box” with Vista (can not deal with default Vista security settings (need to locate binaries and run as administrator to even play the game). Patches make matters worse and prevent button binding on my logitec mouse (very difficult for left handers imo). Very Short, dissapointing game, graphics are ok but stutter, often find yourself firing blind at where you hope the screen might update. I won’t bother with EPIC games in future; however I did get a free 30 day “gold” voucher in the box, so if I played online (which I don’t) I could play for 30 days.
I really can not be bothered to finish the last few checkpoints as all my weapon bindings are now being ignored. Lazy and expensive console port, would not recommend.

  53. Riyad Kalla March 10, 2008 at 3:03 pm #

Nigel, unfortunately I’d have to say this is likely the “way things will be from EPIC” from now on as they have been more and more openly Pro-Console-Only gaming (Cliffy B and then Sweeney yesterday).

I imagine any game they do after this will be a 3rd party port to Vista like Gears was.

  54. jdoe March 20, 2008 at 10:44 am #

After reading the previous posts and visiting links on this page, as well as googling for myself, I wish I’d have done my research BEFORE buying this D4MN game. Anyways, I still gotta ask. … is there a workaround for the installation bug? I cant even install the thing. I got windows xp pro, intel pentium dual core @2.2Ghz, Nvida 8600 GT, 160 gig HDD ¿?¿?¿any suggestions¿?¿?¿?

  55. Help me = ( March 21, 2008 at 1:41 am #

Hay pplz im trying to fix Gears of so that i can save my game play on my PC but i cant seem to find the folder Mr “I hope Bill Gates wakes up mildly warm” was talking about on Responses 17, i am running XP pro would there be a diffrent folder than ” C:\Documents and Settings\asdf\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\XLive\Content\E00006BEE780104D\FFFE07D10010000\E00006BEE780104D_MountPt\4D530842.gpd” ?

  56. jj March 26, 2008 at 12:53 pm #

    BTW:
1:you need a FREE live account to save your game (also known as a profile in any other game)
2:you can still play online FOR FREE (aka:silver) just not cross platform(xbox vs PC)

And I want to know how it could possibly be microsofts fault that gears sucks , they just control the server that you play on.

ANY ONE WITH THE SAVE GAME PROBLEM I HAVE WORKED IT OUT THIS WONT FIX THE SAVES THE WAY IT SHOULD BE FROM THE START BUT THIS DOES WORK FOR SINGLE PLAYER MODE SO HERE GOES CHANGE YOUR WINDOWS FIREWALL SETTINGS TO BLOCK GEARS OF WAR RUN THE GAME AS NORMAL AND WHEN YOUR READY TO QUIT INSTEAD OF EXITING THE GAME THROUGH THE GEARS OF WAR MENU PRESS ALT AND TAB TO INSTANTLY EXIT TO WINDOWS THEN EXIT GEARS OF WAR FROM THE TASKBAR BY RIGHT CLICKING THE MOUSE AND THEN EXIT THE REASON FOR WHY THIS WORKS IS BECAUSE WHEN YOU ARE UNABLE TO SIGN INTO YOUR WINDOWS LIVE ACCOUNT GEARS OF WAR SENDS MICROSOFT A MESSAGE THROUGH THE INTERNET WITHOUT YOU REALIZING THEN MICROSOFT SENDS A MESSAGE BACK TO YOUR PC MAKING YOUR COMPUTER AUTOMATICLY DELETE THE GOW SAVED GAME (CRAFTY I KNOW!!!) BUT IF THERE IS NO INTERNET COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE GAME AND THE INTERNET AND YOU EXIT THE GAME AS I MENTIONED ABOVE BY PRESSING ALT AND TAB THE GAME WILL MAKE AN INSTANT SAVE JUST BEFORE THE INSTANT EXIT AND THE NEXT TIME YOU START UP THE GAME YOUR FIREWALL WILL BLOCK MICROSOFT AND YOU CAN RESUME YOUR GAME FROM WHERE YOU LEFT OFF NOW THIS IS A TECHNICAL GLITCH FROM THOSE MONKEYS AT MICROSFT AND EPIC THAT PROVES GOW NEVER HAD ANYMORE THAN 20 MIN TEST BEFORE GIVING THE ORDER TO MASS PRODUCE SOUNDS TO ME LIKE THEY EMPLOY PEOPLE ON THE STREET

  58. MORPH9927 April 5, 2008 at 6:13 pm #

UNFORTUNATLY MY ABOVE POST MEANS YOU HAVE TO START THE GAME FROM THE BEGINNING

  59. Riyad Kalla April 7, 2008 at 7:16 am #

Morph, thanks for posting your workaround man. It does suck that the game has to be started over, but for folks that paid $65 for it and want to play it at all, this might be the best workaround there is right now.

    hi

Could i please have help as im struggling to install Gears of War on my Vista 32bit. When i try and alocate a different drive where i have enough space on to install, it still goes back to the c drive where my operating system is on. The problem is that its a drive thats partitioned, so there isnt enough space on it to install the whole game. How can i change it so that it will install it on the drive with space on it?????

    PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!

  61. Blackreaper April 10, 2008 at 1:42 pm #

Heh, its kinda strange to read all those comments saying they have problems installing the game. I had no problems at all. And it runs on my computer rather well, tho I have 7300GT, 1 GB RAM and Dual Core Athlon 2.0 GHz. It lags sometimes, but graphics arent that bad and its still playable.
Ah that saving problem… I guess now when I started the game third time I’ll be able to finish it :) The best solution I think is to turn internet connection off. As simple as that. No need to backup files, mess with firewalls and stuff like that. So far it works for me.

  62. Jayesh April 25, 2008 at 1:27 am #

while playing the first stage prison, the game stops and ends on desktop. It says windows live encountered a problem.i m eager to play the game. Can someone sort out the problem.PLEASE

  63. Riyad Kalla April 25, 2008 at 6:50 am #

    Jayesh,
I think a few folks mentioned that it will work if you disconnect your PC from the internet, effectively killing the Windows Live (total mess) service… let us know if that worked.

There are also a few other tips in these comments as well you might want to try out.

For mouse problem , let Go to my documents/my games/gears of war/wargame/config and delete the file name “warinput.ini”
    and restart game again.

i’ve got a problem in that it says “the program is trying to execute in an unusual way” ive had this problem for supcom forged alliance aswell but i can find a way to deal with it. help anyone?

  67. Riyad Kalla June 17, 2008 at 8:47 am #

    darkseide,
I’ve never seen that prompt before, it could be either an anti-virus program or the Windows Data Execution Prevention support popping up… you can turn that on/off under the System Properties > Performance (Settings) > “Data Execution Prevention” (tab). See if that helps.

I’m still amazed at how much trouble Gears of War folks are having running it on Windows.

  68. darkseide June 18, 2008 at 8:26 pm #

thanks but it still wont run
    more detail on the error
    microsoft visual C++ runtme library
    program: blah blah Wargame-G4WLive
this application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

  69. Riyad Kalla June 18, 2008 at 9:20 pm #

    darkseide,
Check the link here, I think that might help.

There is also a regedit trick here that might help… jesus I can’t believe how much bullshit people have to go through to play EPIC’s games on Windows… and EPIC hasn’t/won’t patch this.

  70. darkseide June 19, 2008 at 9:46 pm #

    yet again more problems
my bro installed this on my comp but forgot to tell me there was a problem while installing so i re-installed and heres the prob.

Help, If someone knowks how can i save the games, always when i play the game start from begining, if some can help please contact me.

    Thanks!!!

  72. LR July 2, 2008 at 2:37 pm #

I had the same problems too, then found out that if everything was installed right and updated right, it was the refresh rate. I locked my monitor’s refresh rate at 60Hz, and tried running it, and it ran with out any glitches or problems. The only theory i cud make of this is that GOW prolly has variable refresh rates through out the game or smthing that shuts the game down, do get a software that locks up the refresh rate and try it out. might help.

  75. Swazy September 6, 2008 at 7:03 am #

So i got this game, and I’m running it with a 2.2ghz intel duo processor. Everything installed fine, but everytime i start to run the game it shuts down. What’s up with that? I dont’ want to have to spend 2hundred just to upgrade the processor, which I WILL DO to play this game, but i dont’ want to do it.

Any suggestions on how to work around that???? lemme kno!

  76. Editor September 6, 2008 at 7:44 am #

    Swazy,

Unfortunately no suggestions, have you checked to make sure you have the game patched up as much as possible? Did you check the EPIC forums?

So far this launch on the PC has been a complete/unplayable disaster for most folks… the only thing I can think of to suggest is to take that $200 and just buy an Xbox after the price drop instead to avoid this retardedness on the PC.

  77. RadialkillaND October 28, 2008 at 6:28 am #

Ok i have had prblems with gears when i installed it, it ran so crappy, but then due to other problems, i ended up re-doing my operating system and now gears of war runs absolutely perfect in every way.

  94. noname May 6, 2010 at 11:01 pm #

    for modified executable error
change ur system date to 2007

    • Lyon September 12, 2010 at 5:35 pm #

Thanks, that did the trick. But then i got problems with using online on LIVE account, so had to go back to current date 2010. But then again, no Gears. So then i just pulled it back to 2007, then went into the game, and pressed windows boutton, and change again to 2010 WHILE was running. Then i could download patch and use online and get achivements and now i can have it 2010 all the time.

I cannot complete the installation of Gears for my PC. After it goes through copying the files and decompressing the data, it gives an error message at the end. Does anyone have any advice for this? Thanks. I’ve never had problems installing anything on my computer before in over ten years, and this has become very frustrating for me.
