So after the run-away hit that are the new SNL Digital Shorts series that were added to the show after Samberg joined the cast and their most recent hit Jizz in My Pants, I decided to dig up what is going on…
It looks like Andy Samberg is part of a comedy group called The Lonely Island along with Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone. The group was founded in 2001 and started off in Los Angeles before moving to New York and joining the writing and acting cast of Saturday Night Live.
Here’s the full bio-breakdown:
The group was founded in 2001 by Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone and Andy Samberg. The three have been friends since attending junior high and high school together in Berkeley, CA. After high school they parted ways for college (Akiva to UCSC majoring in film, Andy to UCSC followed by NYU Film and Jorma graduated from UCLA Theater.) Eventually they all landed in an apartment in Los Angeles where they resumed filming comedy shorts and christened themselves (and their apartment) ‘The Lonely Island’. They have been collectively writing, directing and acting in projects ever since and are frequently joined by their friend Chester Tam (repped by UTA and 3 Arts).
Then even did a sketch comedy show pilot for Fox called Awesometown, here’s the Pilot:
looks pretty funny but also looks a bit one-off for mass-media… maybe more along the lines of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog? Their Episodes page also has additional short episodes they’ve done.
That’s pretty awesome when you think about it, a group of guys that want nothing more than to be in comedy/entertainment and work towards it from the get-go and then finally make it to SNL?
Good for them (we were just talking about this…)
