Android App Inventor – Do-It-Yourself Mobile Apps from Google

A modern age saying goes “Where there’s a will, there’s a way and there’s a mobile app for that”. It seems Google has taken this saying a bit too seriously. The company has recently launched the Android App Inventor, a do-it-yourself mobile app creation software which lets anyone create an Android app without requiring any programming knowledge.

The App Inventor for Android tool has a simple and intuitive visual interface. There are pre-built drag and drop blocks for just about every kind of functionality offered by Android API. The tool is immensely powerful and can be used to build a variety of simple as well as sophisticated applications ranging from database apps, GPS-based navigation apps, texting apps and a lot more.

The drag and drop software is free for use and is a testimony of Google’s philosophy to enable people to become creators, rather than just being consumers, in today’s mobile world. Android, Google’s flagship mobile operating system is open-source and with the App Inventor, Google has taken its user-centric model to an unprecedented high level. Apple, Google’s chief competitor in the mobile space, is often blasted for its closed-source approach and dictatorship regime when it comes to developing mobile apps for the iPhone and iPad. I’m sure that App Inventor is bound to further pile up the pressure on Steve Jobs & company to consider a more flexible development methodology.

To use the App Inventor tool, you need to have a Google Gmail account. App Inventor is web-based except for a small utility which syncs apps apps between your computer and Android phones. The utility is handy for professional developers as well as it lets them design the UI wireframes in a matter of minutes. There’s no doubt that as App Inventor is bound to fulfill the dreams of thousands of Android users who’d love to try their hand at creating their own apps. I won’t rule out Android Market being flooded with a large number of apps created using this tool.

If you have an idea for the next killer mobile app, get started with the App Inventor for Android today!

I’ve poked around with this, and it has promise. But I think it’s still a very “developer-centric” tool kit. That is likely to improve over time. But, I wouldn’t be surprised if this languishes a bit in the Beta stage (like everything else).

I can also see this making the Android marketplace into a sewer of crappy Apps that everyone’s 11 year old kid made that produce fart noises. <– Nothing wrong with those.

I'm looking forward to when MobiOne gets Android and BlackBerry support. I personally think it's a bit easier to use and intuitive for outputting cross-platform Apps. Google's will, of course, be only for Android.

Disclosure: I work for the company that builds MobiOne, but I'm also willing to say when someone does something better. In this case, I think Google is intriguing, but will naturally have a limited scope that is advantageous to their end-game.
